My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights at the end of November. We upgraded to a Red Level room, which was worth the money. Free drinks, breakfast, and internet as well as a daily dry cleaning allowance. Plus, our room's view of the of the skyline was fantastic as we were on the second highest floor of the hotel.
First, the pros of the hotel:
Good location.... A 5-10 minute walk to the subway and IFC mall, etc. We went up in the Pearl tower and some other tall buildings in the area. Great views.
The food was good and enjoyed the Red Level Lounge
The service was earnest and helpful, but not polished.
The room was nice and well appointed.
The service was earnest, but not polished. All of the staff were professional, dressed appropriately, but were just a bit off in the delivery of service. Part of it could have been a language barrier problem. I am not sure. At times, the service felt a bit confused. In other words, everyone looked the part, but did not act the part. Four star service, not 5 star.
The room- Although very nice with a great view, the design was a bit too cute and it felt a little bit like staying on a Hollywood move set. It looked great, but in reality was not meant to function so well. For example, we had constant issues with the temperature in our room. The room would just not stay at the same consistent temperature. We heard about some of these issues in Chinese hotels during the winter, but it is hard to accept in a 5 star hotel. Further, the bathroom also smelled of methane and that is not due to myself or my wife! There was some kind of heating system that made the mirror and the floor tiles very warm, but smelly as well.
Having stayed at Melia hotels before I expected a more European flavor and found this in Shanghai. The hotel looked nice, but felt a bit hollow when it came to service and functionality. Having said all of that, the hotel was a good value for the money.
