“excellent pool and spa!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

The location is superb. 5 min walk from MTR. Right next to the Pearl tower, Aquarium and the famous buildings like Shanghai IFC. Also near the conference center. The service is generally good. The pool is at the top floor overviewing the high rise buildings and the Pearl Tower. The Spa is FREE with a suana, steam room, 1 heated and 1 room temperation jaccuzi plus a few benches for relaxation. The gym has about 10 machines operating 24 hours a day.
The buffet has a great variety from chinese dim sums, noodles , to Japanese miso soup and sushi, to european oatmeals , eggs and suasages. Very comfortable with high ceilings.

Room Tip: need a cap for swimming pool wifi at lobby only

My husband and I recently chose The Gran Melia Shanghai to spend our birthday celebrations for 15 days. Our room, to begin with set the tone for an incredible time. It was contemporary luxury with ample space and the most stunning views. The bed, we would have loved to have taken home! The location of our room was private and quiet, our ideal. Thank you to Arrow for begining our trip. Our red level team including Foster, Yudith and Ted, always pointed us in the right direction and found every opportunity to delight us and ensure our every desire. We have traveled all over the world, many times to Gran Melia Hotels. Regardless of high star ratings hotels do not always earn their mark. Gran Melia Shanghai earns every star WARMLY and GENUINELY. I have not given a higher recommendation to anyone . We will always remember our friends in Shanghai and forever miss you... Thank you for the memories

Gran Melia is a Spanish-base hotel group. In recent years they landed on China, Shanghai as one of the very important step in China hotel industry.

Comparing to those experience hotel group, Gran Melia indeed needs improvement to become a luxury hotel.

I travelled to Shanghai for business quite often, recently my company got a very good corporate deal with this hotel so I started to check into this hotel almost once a month.

Some of the floors are equipped with horrible pictures - if you are having spirit-phobia, please don't check into any of the 20th floor rooms, since they put woman pictures in the room, and LOOK at you directly while you are sleeping. Trust me, being watched at night is NOT very comfortable. (See attached pictures)

Operator and reservation staff WERE RUDE on phone. When I asked them whether my internet was free of charge, they said 'no' (but I remember clearly my plan is included), and I asked the lady to check, she said ýour room only included breakfast', I asked again "CAN YOU CHECK, PLEASE' and she kept giving me the same answer like broken CD...until I asked the third time, she finally 'given up' and passed my call to front desk. Finally the front desk staff confirmed my room has complimentary internet. I thought it was settle.

NO, IT WAS NOT SETTLE! Upon check out, I was charged for the internet fee. I need to clarify for thousands time for me to get rid of this charge - it is not about pay or not pay, it's about the frustration of inconsistency. They were playing guests around and giving us trouble, anger and frustration.

Actually, the facilities and fixtures are awesome. I especially like the jacuzzi and swimming pool! Must go if you got some spare time.

The breakfast wasn't bad neither, but then if you have special request for skim-milk, you needed to ask EVERY SINGLE TIME. Not every wait staff know they provide skim milk.

The meeting here was a disaster - if you organise an event in here, please don't, since their sales staff wasn't very helpful.

By the way, the room cleanliness was an issue - I am so sure that they don't vacuum for stay over staff - since I put a used contact lens on the carpet, after two days, they were still there - it proves that they don't vacuum.

Overall, the inconsistency is the key problem of Gran Melia. If they do not change, their name of luxury hotel will be ripped off very soon.

Room Tip: Just don't go for 20th Floor

The best feature of this hotel is its breakfast! Superb scenery and setting, I would wake up every morning for the breakfast which I would normally skip breakfast. The staff was very great especially one in particular who made the place even more warm and friendly. If anyone goes for the breakfast there and doesn't know chinese look for Yudith Pinera. She can communicate in english very well and I find one of the most friendliest and most interesting staff I've ever met!!! :)

This is a relative newcomer to Shanghai, and is just minutes from the Aquarium, Pearl Tower, Convention Centre, Super Brands Mall, IFC Mall and the Bund sightseeing tunnel.
Most modern hotels do not differ very much in their rooms. The Gran Melia is no exception - a corridor flanked by the bathroom and closets leads to a reasonably spacious room with a very comfortable bed, writing desk and armchair. There is the usual minibar, and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities.
The bathroom is big enough, but the shower is irritating. The water temperature does not seem to respond to any amount of knob twisting, and was always just lukewarm. I do not know if this is a problem in all the rooms, or just mine, but it was not enough of a problem to mar my stay.
The buffet breakfast spread is excellent, but there is a tendency to clear your table if you get up to get something else. There is a good choice of restaurants and they seem reasonably priced. The staff are reasonably helpful.
On entering the lobby, one is struck by the strong scent (?potpourri) which I found rather overwhelming.
Finally, a complimentary newspaper delivered to the room would be nice. You have to go to the front desl and ask if you want one, at present.

Stayed here recently and was very impressed. the rooms were lovely, the staff attentive, the pool was great (if a little cold), but would have liked it to have a bit more of a buzz. We had access to the business lounge, but were often the only people there, whichj made it a bit quiet. Also the taxi drivers had no idea where it was. I take it that is because it is new though.

Room Tip: The rooms with the Bund view have the best outlook

Location: Great location in the middle of the financial district and a very short walk to the metro.
Service: Normally very good but some staff found it slightly difficult to communicate in English.
Facilities: Superb swimming pool and funky bar on the top floor overlooking the city.
Price: Great value and very cheap for such a good 5 star hotel.
Food: The breakfast is amazing for red level customers.

Recommendation: You must upgrade to the red level to enjoy the spectacular views and enjoy the inclusive pre-dinner drinks and food in a beautiful... well worth the extra money!
