“Traditional heart of Shanghai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

This a lovely accommodation in the heart of The French concession away from all the street hassle of staying around the Bund. It makes a great base from which to discover the surrounding area.
I stayed in the Oriental Pearl and was delighted by the lay out which was spacious and full of character. A mere ten minutes walk to some great dining venues, a microbrew bar (Shanghai Brewery) and jazz at the Cotton Club around the corner. (In case Shanghai proper gets a little much)
One of the nicest places I have ever stayed. I did have to move to a very grand 5 star hotel over the weekend for work, and would have swapped it in a heartbeat to be back.
Simply superb.

I almost never stay in B&Bs but the idea of staying in an old French Concession house seemed like a great idea. The rooms are very nice, the owner Kenny is quite helpful, and the location (10 minute walk south of Jing'an Temple) is great. Rooms are each decorated differently (at least one has a balcony) and all are tasteful. Nice private courtyard in the front. Maybe not the best place if you don't like stairs or need a lot of space, but if those don't bother you, then book it.

Comfortable, clean, tastefully designed and decorated. The Quintet was a welcome change from the cavernous, gilded big-city hotels throughout Shanghai. A great place to stay if you'd like to feel that you've "gotten away" from the chaos of the big city while still being in the center of the wonderful Former French Concession. Kenny, the manager, is very kind and helpful and went the extra mile to ensure personalized service. Will stay again.

Everything good that is said about this place is true - location, cleanliness, atmosphere, breakfast, etc.

I did want to add one thing. While we were there one of the guests lost his passport and visa. The on-site manager - Kenny - jumped in and helped him overcome the problems with the Chinese government so he could get the visa re-issued. It was above and beyond the call of duty for a B&B-style lodging, IMO and deserves noting.

Not sure others mentioned it but Quintet is very near the Changsu metro station (two lines cross there). Also next door (literally - it shares a wall) to a good restaurant (called "2nd Floor," which is - duh - on the 2nd floor) with a good bar and a lot of slim, chic, 30ish guys and gals there. But those are just little side benefits, as Quintet is a first-rate lodging.

Room Tip: The Oriental Pearl's garden room is indeed too cold in the winter to warrant paying a premium ov...

I stayed at the Quintet B&B for 8 days in March of 2013. This quaint simple bed and breakfast is clean, safe and ideally located in an excellent part of Shanghai. It is minutes to multiple train lines (which are easy to use) and ideally located within short walking distance to excellent restaurants, bars, coffee shops and two of Shanghai's breweries! The staff was very pleasant and breakfast was served each morning in a clean serene dining room to your order. Food was excellent by the way and a great way to start your day. Bathrooms came equipped with clean fluffly towels, boutique soaps and recepticles for your needs. Rooms have cable tv and are cleaned each day. I highly reccomend this place for your stay whether on business or pleasure.

Room Tip: I stayed in Joffre Room which is suitable for one or two people at most. Rooms all located on singl...

I stayed in Quintet last week for a night. Just wanted to try something different from the usual stay in hotels, and I had a really nice experience. Quintet has a very convenient location in the French Quarter. Nearby there lots of interesting shops and restaurants to make foreigners feel at home. Subways are within walking distance. In a sunny winter day, walking in this area was a wonderful experience.

The B&B itself is of a traditional Shanghai apartment. The furnishing offers modern convenience, but the old-style apartment and the small stairway offer you a glimps into the past lives of Shanghainese. It's also a wonder to hear from the manager, Kenny, that, in this type of apartments, each of these rooms used to host one family or more in the old days!

I really enjoyed my stay at Quintet.
