Stayed at this fab little YHA hostel in March 08, and, having stayed in less-than-pleasant YHAs beforehand, we honestly couldnt believe our eyes when we saw the room we were given at BeeHome... it was fantastic!
the whole hostel is brand spanking newly renovated, which may lose something in terms of 'traditional' charm, but it certainly made up the difference by being spotlessly clean (the rooms are also serviced daily) and nicely decorated. our huge room was a double on the top floor (i think there are 3 floors), and was spilt across two levels - a kind of two-story loft conversion! it was very light, with one gigantic window, and there was also a sofa, a desk and a TV (no international news but if you're up for a bit of goverment gloss you can watch the english language chinese news station). the ensuite was clean with lots of hot water. my only criticism would be that - as we were visiting in winter - it was extremely cold (particularly at night) as there was no heating in the room. we used our sleeping bags under the duvets!
we found the location of the hostel great - the website has really good directions for how to get to the hostel from the (very) nearby Dongchang Road metro station, and whilst it's in the CBD rather than the Bund/main tourist area, the metro station (literally a couple of minutes away, and the metro system is so easy and efficient!) gives you great transportation links to anywhere in the city, but if you want to go about on foot then the oriental pearl tower (well worth a visit - don't believe the lonely planet on that front), the riverbank (and that crazy under-the-river tunnel ride) are all about 20 mins walk away (although it does involve a lot of main road walking... not exactly scenic).
there's a small bar/restaurant on site, really funkily decorated with modern chinese cartoon-style art and big sofas. the food (mostly western but not bad!) and drinks are a little pricey by chinese standards, but it was nice to have somewhere onsite to grab a meal if you couldnt be bothered wandering further afield. [on the subject of food, if you go further up the side road (i.e. the smaller road you turn into from Dongchang Road before turning off for the hostel's alley) and through the archway at the top then you come to a really good indian restaurant, which looks out over a little square where a group of women practise scarf-dancing in the evenings]. the area around the hostel had great amenities - plenty of ATMs and convenience stores, which were certainly very 'convenient'!
there's also reasonably fast internet on site (some weird rules about 15mins or so free per day, but i don't think we were ever asked to pay a penny and we used it quite a lot while we were there), and also DIY laundry facilities.
the desk staff are shy but friendly, and still learning english, but did their best to be helpful, and managed to organise airport taxis etc for us without any problems.
a really good choice if you're looking for somewhere quiet, clean and modern, with a budget price without the budget mentality!
