“Great Dumplings with Not-Always Great Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2011

I will just concur with the numerous other reviews here praising the dumplings at Din Tai Fung. We especially enjoyed the pork dumplings with the soup. However, all the dumpling dishes we tried were delicious. Also especially good was their stir-fried pok-choy dish.

It was interesting to watch them prepare the dumplings. Included with the meat mixture with which they stuff the dumplings they add aspic, essentially good quality chicken (or duck) stock that congeals into a gelatin when chilled. The aspic melts and cooks together with the meat stuffing as the dumpling is steamed. This yields a very juicy dumpling with a flavorful pool of juices that make these little buns wonderfully delicous.

The one comment I will add about the restaurant is the unven service we experienced. On one ocassion the service was friendly and attentive. A second visit resulted in a less enjoyable service experience: very slow responses that were less than congenial.

“The best Chinese dumplimngs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2010

After walking around Shanghai we wanted to try some famous Chinese dumplings and using the tourist guides, we found this restaurant as one of the best in the city.

We took a taxi and were surprised that the restaurant is located in a shopping mall and lots of people were just walking around, so the ambient was more of a fast-food than of a high-quality restaurant.

The dumplings were excellent. The choice was great and even if you tried, you couldn't taste all of them (they are served 4-10 per serving). I did not have anything to compare it with, but the taste was great and I liked it very much, so I can recommend it. Also, we got oolong tea and complimentary sauces: vinegar and soy sauce which went well with the dishes.

The final price for 4 servings of dumplings (around 36 dumplings in total) and unlimited amount of tea was around 200 yuans, which was not much, but not a low price for food in China. We did not eat dessert as the dumplings were more than enough.

We went there during the day, around 4 pm, and we did not need any reservations or we didn't have to wait any time for a free table. The service was quick and efficient and the dishes were changed quickly. The only disadvantage was the fact that table was a bit too small so all the dishes did not fit into it and the waiters had to wait until we eat one serving to bring us another one.

In general, if I go back again to Shanghai, I will try it again certainly.

“Best dimsum around!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2010

Clean, delicious and in good locations!
The dimsum of DingTaiFeng, especially dumplings, are one of the best choices around.
It is said that chef Albert Adriá, from ElBulli (Spain), cried of joy after tasting these dumplings.
Whether this is true or false remains to be seen, however, I helped myself to a second serving!
It is a little pricy though...

“Great meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2010

There is a great variety for all tastes. Typical restaurant prices in comparison to street food, but with an excellent casual atmosphere and great staff. Had some noodle soup which was very tasty in addition to a variety of dumplings. Recommended!

“Yummy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2010

Went to the Din Tai Fung along West Nanjing Street for dinner and it was fantastic for dumplings. Amazing how they encased all that delicious soup in the dumplings. Restaurant was clean and pleasantly decorated (not garish). You can watch as the chefs and cooks work in the kitchen.
