“Xiao long bao and much more..!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2013

First visited this restaurant in Beijing when it first opened there but recently came to the Shanghai branch which is still as good as ever. I am always concerned that quality drops when restaurants become chains, but the xiao long bao are as good as ever and the range of other dishes are excellent as well, especially the dou miao which are often completely sold out by dinner time, as well as the cold appetizers and noodles. I was told no bookings could be made after 5.30 PM so was worried the line would be extremely long at 7 PM, but the turnover is quick and we were seated in around 15 minutes even lots of other people before us. Definitely a must-eat when visiting Shanghai!

“If You Love Dumplings, This is the Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

This restaurant does have incredible dumplings. My favorites were the chicken with black truffle and the pork. We also had the chicken soup in a pot, but I felt it needed some salt or something else to spice it up. Seemed more like chicken water. The service is attentive, but not terribly friendly. The décor is very basic with simple chairs and tables, but the food is so good and the prices reasonable so it doesn’t matter. An excellent choice if you love dumplings.

“Great soup dumplings!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013

Go for the standard pork soup dumplings. I tried the shrimp dumplings with vegetables and wasn't that impressed. Ask for vinegar, ginger strips and chili sauce. Be careful not to burn your mouth on the soup inside the dumplings. Put the dumpling in a soup spoon and take a small bite from the side to let the soup drain out.

The string beans with minced meat and cucumbers and chili sauce were great appetizers. The hot and sour soup was "meh" at best.

Although it's a bit expensive for the area, you get the comfort you are in a safe restaurant with a good crowd. You pay around $20 USD for a decent lunch. Not crazy at all by major US city standards. For China, it's expensive.

“Dumplings the best of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2013

Din Tai Fung originated in Taiwan but has spread it's base to several cities in China, Singapore, Hong Kong, the US, and possibly other parts of the world. As a for resident of Asia I can tell you that these restaurants are the best we have ever eaten it. If you are a dumpling buff there are dozens of different kinds complete with instructions how they should eaten. They are not limited to dumplings. More types of Chinese style dishes made from Pork, Chicken, Duck, Beef and more than you can possible imagine.

If you are planning a trip I strongly suggest you find out if they have a restaurant in the cities you are going to. They have multiple web sites and most likely have been well written up in Tripadvisor in many of them. There places range from ultra modern to traditional but always clean and orderly. English spoken in all of them.

Prices are reasonable, service is beyond exceptional. Try chicken, pork, duck, vegetable, truffles, beef and more. You will not be sorry.

“Make this your first meal in Shanghai! (and last)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

It was my first time to Shanghai and a friend who goes there often on business highly recommended Din Tai Fung. He told me what his favorite dishes were and to try them. It took us two days to finally get to the restaurant - which is part of an Asian chain and there are (I think) 6 locations in the city. Had I gone my first day, I would have gone back each day of my 3 day visit.

The restaurant was alive at about 2:00pm full of Occidentals and Orientals having lunch. The service is non stop - in a good way, not overbearing. They're very helpful in explaining the vast menu. I cannot suggest what to order because Nothing was bad. All was Great! You can observe them making the dumplings to order behind glass at the front of the restaurant adjacent to the kitchen. Each dumpling gets '18 folds to keep the aroma in' - So says the menu. We over ate but I keep thinking about how good that meal was. I wish they had a location in Florida or New York. They do have 3 locations in Los Angeles and 1 in Seattle. I'm going next time in LA!!!
