Having travelled to and through China for more than a decade, I've given up on the big international hotel chains a long time ago. They are overpriced, mainly dated and the rooms are often very small. But on the other hand I never quite dared to try the local low-price chain inns. I had the perception that they would be sleazy, dark and Karaoke infested.
How wrong I was!
For RMB155 (USD25/EUR19) per night I got a bright, very decent size room with two comfortable and clean beds. When I look at this price now, I shake my head in disbelief and think that's what I used to pay for only a lousy WI-FI connection alone in some "5 star" hotels!
Anyway, it had all the amenities that I needed and best of all - FREE fast WI-FI throughout the hotel!! It is pretty accessible with the Metro around 7min walk away and there were always taxis waiting in front of the entrance. Actually I chose it because I'm a runner and Century Park (Shanghai's largest park) is close by.
The only point that I was not happy with (and hence only four stars) was that every evening there were one or two guys pushing "massage advertising" through the door. The hotel warns their guests about such "lewd" advertising, but does nothing to prevent it. That needs to be improved.
Apart from that it was a pleasant experience - especially for my wallet.
