“Solid 4 Star + Fantastic staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

I've never stayed at a Swissotel before and was not familiar with this chain until this stay. My stay at the Shanghai Swissotel was a great experience. The hotel grand lobby was big and nice. The guest room was Swiss decor (like Ikea style but better quality furnishing). Big room with good view of the streets, nice big bathroom with bathtub and walk-in shower. Not a lot of shower space by the sink for toiletries but enough drawers to compensate. Big screen tv, wireless internet and sufficient plugs at desk. Bed was a bit hard for a western hotel but I guess they are trying to accommodate local preference. Electric hot water boiler and complimentary tea was good to have. Only complaint is the very small closet. It was really small.

The spa was very nice for hotel guests. Complimentary use of sauna, steam room and hot tubs. There were several hot tubs with jets and a cold tub. Nice size swimming pool. Good locker room facilities. Didn't get a chance to check out the gym.

I was very surprised by the staff, all of whom were super enthusiastic to help. When I arrived, the lobby staff helped me with luggage and stayed with me in line to make sure the guests lined up in proper order to be helped by the check-in desk. When I needed a taxi during rush hour, the outside concierge staff practically ran on the street with me to make sure I caught the cab. Everytime I called for housekeeping or room service, the person answering the phone was always courteous and always asked if I needed anything else. Services were prompt. The level of service was just overall very impressive for China.

I ate at the Yuan Yuan Chinese restaurant a few times and food was pretty good. Also fast and good service by the wait staff.

This hotel's location is as good as it can get. Right in center of Shanghai Puxi's business district by Nanjing Xi Road. Subway station practically next to the hotel (No.2 and No.7 lines -- can get you to Pudong and Airport easily). It's right behind the Jiu Guang Shopping Center, which has a huge Japanese import supermarket in the basement for whatever you need, and also a Watsons (CVS & Boots of Shanghai) if you need personal care products. Tons of restaurants on top of the Jiu Guang Shopping Center too. Great location whether you're here for work or for fun.

Overall, my stay has been okay. The executive lounge service and hospitality is still too regimental. The lounge staffs adhere to the administrative management regulations by the book. This type of lounge environment make you feel the unfriendly hospitality and uncomfortable being in the lounge.

In my case, I had a bad experience being asked by the executive lounge staff to present my companion passport to proof his hotel registration. This is very embarrassing to me and my companion. I was not happy with the supposely executive lounge service manner.

The hotel front desk and check in service has greatly improved since my last stay and I wish to comment their administrative management improve service. I still feel their executive lounge administrative lounge management is not well managed.

I stayed in this hotel on buiness. In general it was great, Wi-Fi worked, bar area good, breakfast was a mix of western and chinese. But why oh why did I get a rare steak when I asked for medium to well done on my first evening. Gone are the days I could eat a rare steak. I could have sent it back, I should have sent it back. But i was tired after not being able to sleep on the plane so wanted to eat and get to bed.

The only other issue, the temperature guage in the room either does not work or the air-con is not beefy enough to bring the temperature down.

Other thab that a great clean and convenient hotel.

Good central hotel and on the line from the airport. Check in and greeting very straight forward and escort to room, usual slightly overplayed room demo but generally ok. The rooms are good with plenty of pillows and plugs for charging and TV adequate with enough English channels to keep you amused. Minibar, desk and a good bathroom complete the set.
The restaurants are ok and you need to adventurous to dabble in the local cuisine with a bit of sea cucumber and deep fried bullfrog to get you over the jet lag. Plenty of western food and good steaks. The one weak point is the bar which is in the lobby and not great. Possibly the worst G&T ever and poor cocktails as they seem to be using tonic and soda guns which leave you with flat drinks. All round good hotel but go out for drinks. Good value and would stay there again

Me and my husband stayed 8 days in Swissotel Shanghai for our Chinese new year.

We had an issue with the temperature of the room for the first couple of days but after had a discussion with the management, they offered us a room upgrade which was very satisfied for us. The room has a various material selection for the pillow, good amenities, and nice crew.

We think that Swissotel can be one of the greatest place to stay when you visit Shanghai.

I stayed Swissotel 8 nights. It is 2 min working distance from tube line number 2, Jing an temple.

They provided good service. Although we had a difficulty with heater at the first day, management team took our feedback carefully and act accordingly at the end. we had some comfortable time in Swissotel.

Personally I liked the quality of amenity(towel..) and linen.

Room Tip: Higher floor has better view.

First stay at this hotel - we were in SH for NYE and a friend's wedding and chose this hotel for the location and the value. The reception staff were very friendly and offered us a complimentary upgrade to a Swiss Advantage room. The room was on a higher floor with nice view of the city, really clean and beautiful room and large bathroom, comfortable bed. The hotel is located in the heart of the city about 3 min walk to Jing an temple and metro station and on a central line so easy to get to all touristy areas. Take metro one stop to Nanjing West Road station and you have all the food and shopping near by, extremely convenient. Two stops to People's Square and Nanjing East Road.

We did not try the hotel breakfast as there are so many options near by and a coffee beans and tea leaf shop 2mins away. There was a coffee machine in the room and free wifi on our floor and in the lobby. Overall a lovely hotel for business/leisure, great value for what we paid and we highly recommend it.
