“Just perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2011

My husband and I stayed at Toberua Is. Resort end of July into August. In the time we were there the manager went on leave and a replacement manager took over. I have to congratulate Maggie as there was no change in management style and the staff all seemed very happy about the arrangement. Of course the staff are wonderful never forgetting our names or our favourite cocktails. The band boys are to die for at night dulring cocktail hour and dinner. They played all the songs we knew so we were very relaxed.
The food was delicious, with lots of fresh vegetables and melt in the mouth steaks. We had a wonderful time, loved chatting with the other guests from many different countries.
The rooms were large, airy and cool. Well serviced twice daily. Outside dinner was so romantic under the stars on the edge of the water. Value for money although we were too relaxed to do too many trips. Maggie was a delight gently circulating during cocktail hour and dinner making sure everyone was ok but also being unobtrusive. Well done Toberura Island Resort. The owners must be very happy with their two managers - good choices. We will return in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: All rooms faced the sea so all are perfect

Stayed 7 nights in a tropical bure (bure 1) for our honeymoon. Tropical bure (the basic level of bure) was fine, didn't apppear to be much different from the newer bures.
I'll summarise the things we loved and things the few things that didn't suit us (but may appeal to others)
--> Loved
- the Staff- they were beyond 'helpful' or providing good service; you were treated like part of the family. All the staff, from the cleaner who serviced our room during mealtimes since we were virtually always lazing in our bure, to the music men at the bar who stayed up and played beautiful music until we were ready to go to bed, showed such an amazing level of concern and joy at all times, I've never experienced such hospitality.
- the Food- was amazing. Sooo much food (continental + hot breakfast, 3 course lunch, 4 course dinners, plus moning and afternoon tea, and bar snacks before dinner)... I was always full! But it was quality as well as quantity- every meal was something new and inventive, with a wide range of cuisines and high quality produce. And they came to find you before lunch and dinner so you could choose between 2 options for each course (I'm picky so I like to be able to choose!)
- Honeymoon bonus of two 30min massages were divine- oh and champane and fruit.
- The Village Tour- there were several tours on offer but we only did this one- its the cheapest, but was amazing if you want to see the real Fiji. The poor but joyful village welcomed us openley with handmade lei's, a tour, a traditional kava ceremony with the village chief and elders, a delicious afternoon tea and lots of fun dancing! There were smiles and laughter, it was an experience to remember. Bring some small money to buy a necklace from the ladies (there isn't any industry), but we didn't feel pressured.
---> Things that didn't suit us;
- There wasn't really a beach. You pretty much step from the land into the water, so no lazing on a white sandy beach (good if you don't like fine sand). It was very still, tidal water, like a bay or a big river- no big waves or surfing. Likewise would be good for people who don't like waves or have small children (water isn't very deep most of the time either, good for kids) but wasn't our preference.
- We got a bit bored- No TV, internet, shopping or towns to explore. It was more that we'd never stayed on an island before and usually stay in a town with lots to explore. Would suit people who like to get away from it all.
So I reccomend Toberua as a unique, intimate experience to get away from doing things and relax but experience Fijian Hospitality.

Returned to Toberua after a break of more than ten years - and it is still wonderful. Staff are so helpful and an absolute delight to be around - and it was a lovely surprise to be recognised again after so long. The meals are still superb, and bures very comfortable with great beds.
My only minor gripe is the cost of the fishing - it is now very expensive.
We are seriously thinking about booking again for next year

Sorry for the late review, we actually stayed in Toberua Island Resort last year for my birthday. It was just fantastic and exactly what we were looking for. Saying that we were extremely lucky with the mix of customers there, who were really nice and funny people. Adults only, so we had a great time!

While the island is extremely small, we were never bored and did something different every day like scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, hobie-catting (that was awesome!) and of course my husband participating in the daily staff volleyball competition. He even had a few golf shot on the beach when the tide was low! The owners also said that they will add a 'gym' bure for the cardio-exercise freaks that may visit the place, so there is plenty to do there!

The accommodation was very impressive and we believe we had the best bure of the island. Traditional Fijian decoration with a whole glass wall opening onto the sea (literally 3 meters from the beach or sea depending on the tide, but perfect for those midnight dips!). Amazing view from every bure I would say. Half open-air bathroom accessible from the back of your bure, which was extremely handy when coming back from the beach, as you are able to wash the sand of your feet before spreading it all over the floor of your room. Huge hammock was just perfect for relaxation such as arvo siesta or read a good book. This island was bugs free at that period, so that was a +, considering that mosquitoes just love my blood!

The food was lovely and we have no complaints there. On the contrary, we felt like we had too much to eat (definitely take fullboard, it is worth it!), but because the food was healthy I didn't even put on weight! They call you for each meal with the sound of drums, which was a nice touch.

The staff was just amazing and so friendly, they really made it hard for us to leave and of course a few tears were shed when we left, with them singing to us on the pier!

Would definitely recommend it to anyone who are after a relaxing time with water based activities. We certainly would like to return anyway.

The staff at Toberua Isalnd are outstanding!! From the moment you arrive they know who you are; in which bure you're staying and your drink of preference. Whether you're by the pool, in the day spa, sailing a catarmaran or out fishing or scuba diving, one of these delightful people will find you and take your order for the next meal

Loved everything about the place - the staff, the location, the bures, the food, the opportunity to relax with friends in a paradise where nothing is too much trouble for anyone. We're very keen to go back and take our friends, and then to go again to take our family - thinking of as many excuses as we can for as many return trips as we can afford.
Speaking of which, we thought it was great value for money too. Vinaka vaka levu to everyone who made our holiday so perfect.

Toberua was simply paradise. The staff was outstanding in both service and hospitality. The food was some of the best I have ever had in a resort or in a restaurant for that matter. If you like a laid back experience with the options for a variety of experiences, then this is the place for you. I can not begin to put into words how much we enjoyed our time in Toberua.
