“True relaxation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2011

We have just returned from our first trip to Vomo and it won't be our last. We have been to Fiji numerous times and have enjoyed holidays on other islands and at Denarau but Vomo surpasses them all, it feels like a true holiday. The staff, food, accomodation and beaches were all superb. There were some little niggles - coffee at breakfast always seemed to be very slow - but they are trivia in the grand scheme. Just relax and enjoy. Vomo is unpretentious and welcoming, I would highly recommend it.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011

I have been to Fiji many times so the concept of Fiji time is not new to me. This was our first visit to Vomo. It took us 3 days to work out how to 'use the system' properly to allow us to balance eating for us and our two year old. More about this later.

The Island is beautiful and nicely secluded and a short trip from the Marina at Denaru Island. I would suggest paying the extra money for the helicopter flight or private transfer as the 'free' transfer was a nightmare with a 2 year old and a 4 month old. You stand in a line to check in, your bags disappear into a busy port jetty without tags being put on them and you are rushed onto the boat. When you get to the other end you then have to transfer onto a very small uncovered boat which takes you to the Island. No jetty when you arrive, just straight into the water and onto the sand. Easy as a couple, not so easy with 2 small children. The welcome song and juice are lovely and the rooms are well maintained. Certainly not 5 star but pretty good by Fiji standards.

Our biggest problem was with the food service for our 2 year old. There really are no healthy options on the menu if you don't want your child to have fried food or foods high in sugar. It took us 2 days to find out that they did have brown bread available. They also had natural yoghurt rather than the high sugar fruit options but none of this is offered or supplied unless you ask if it is available.

You need to plan well ahead for the kids meals. The shortest time it ever took to prepare even simple sandwiches was 45 mins. Usually 55 mins. For an adult not a problem but for a 2 year old a very long time to wait. We ordered without butter, it arrived with butter, we ordered brown bread, white bread arrived. The yoghurts on offer were more than 10 days past their expiry date and at least one of the milks we were offered were as well.

Breakfast was interesting. Service supposedly started at 7am but the children's bowls were often not placed out until 720am. The fruit juice is made fresh and is delicious but 3 out of the 4 days arrived after the cooked food despite it being the first thing we ordered.

I gave up asking for milk in a plastic glass with a straw after 2 days and simply went to the bar myself to make sure that it was done right. The brought glass glasses, no straw, no milk, hot milk, any combination but half a glass of milk in a plastic glass with a straw for the child (plastics glasses are readily available as that is what is used around the pool for drinks and drinks service comes from the pool bar). Ordering drinks for adults usually required a 10 minute wait which I thought was the standard on the Island. I was wrong. A group of VIP's arrived and got instant response to everything. 2 wait staff to serve them, drinks arriving maybe a minute or two after being ordered, nothing was too much trouble for this group (It turns out that they had hired out the whole island for a wedding). At the same time we are watching their instant service our 'Fiji Time" service continued.

The staff are lovely and everyone is very friendly. The snorkelling is quite good but certainly nothing like the Great Barrier Reef, Maldives, Solomon Islands etc.

The fish feeding is advertised on the daily list of things to do as a tradition never broken. We turned up the first day and they gave us a muffin, pointed to the water and said that's where you feed the fish! Having done a lot of diving it actually was fun showing my 2 year old that the fish will eat of your hand but the staff certainly didn't have anything to do with that.
They were very helpful getting the kayaks etc in and out of the water and the glass bottom kayak is a great idea and the equipment is in very good condition.

We had a private villa which is certainly the way to go. The ones not on the beach are more secluded but much too far for little kids to manage multiple times a day. The hammocks are great and there is plenty of shade on the sand for kids to play. The pool is not utilised very much by the guests because the water is quite hot, very chlorinated and there is no shade at all in the water. The umbrellas work well to sit under and again the equipment is well maintained.

The food is excellent (even outstanding by Fiji standards) but make sure to let them know any dietary restrictions well ahead of time, it takes 3 days to get any special orders in by boat.

A typical example of the service has just happened as I write this review, tea with milk was requested, tea with sugar but no milk is what arrived. It is the little details that always get missed. Again this never happens with the VIP group as far as we can tell.

We had wonderful weather while we were here but if the weather is bad the kids club has very limited facilities. It is a large room with a big TV and some badly maintained toys. Ok for a brief visit but no good for long periods of time.

Back to the room, we were worried that having 2 kids in the same room would be a problem. Luckily ours are good sleepers and there is just enough room to separate the cots in the room so that they don't disturb each other too much. You obviously have to be quiet when coming back to the room after dinner but when everyone is in the same room you can't expect very much else.

The babysitting and nanny services are excellent. They are available at very short notice and will stay for as long or as short as you like. Minimum charge is an hour for FJ$10 and most of the nannies are genuinely lovely.

Wireless internet is at dial up speed but is free throughout the resort. It's fine for checking emails but not much else. A nice service.

Out of the 5 days here 3 of them had the constant noise of grass cutting for more than 5 hours a day. They don't use lawn movers, they use hand held hedge trimmers and cut all the grass of the resort that way. I assume this was again for the upcoming wedding but made the days less than relaxing. Twice they woke our sleeping 4 month old. Surely a resort like this can afford a lawn mower and get it all done in one day with a minimum of fuss.....

The one down side of the ocean front villa is the take off of the sea plane. Very intense noise which is short lived but loud enough to wake a child even with the villa doors and windows closed.

Did we enjoy our stay - yes.

Would we come back again - no.

I think had we been warned about all the things in my review our expectations might have been different (lower!) and we would have thought twice about coming here. If we decided to come then that would have been our decision rather than relying on the other reviews which we almost universally different to our experience on the island.

So, we had a lovely stay but would suggest that those with small children to take heed of our warnings.

Room Tip: beach front private villas are the best. Room 10 is far enough from the pool to be quiet but close e...

Bula!
Thank you for your review posted about your recent trip to Vomo. We are pleased that you took the time prior to your departure to discuss all of these points with our General Manager and we trust that you were satisfied with the responses he gave you in person.

We will be sure to pass on your comments regarding the transfers to our transfer operators. Guest transfers can be booked by Vomo but they are all operated by third party independent operators and as such their operational policies are unfortunately in this case, out of our control. We trust our General Manager explained some of the processes on Vomo, such as guests in The Residence have a 24-hour butler service included in their rates which pertains to the group of guests mentioned above. This does not excuse any below standard service you experienced and we will continue with our staff training programmes to continually improve the service provided.

If there are any further issues you wish to discuss please contact our General Manager directly and he will be only too happy to speak with you again. All the best and we are pleased to read that overall you enjoyed your stay.

This was our second visit to Vomo and was just as good as the first time around. Normally we wouldnt go back to the same place twice as usually it seems a bit disappointing the second time around but can honestly say that wasnt the case with Vomo.
Everything was excellent especially the food - three courses for lunch as well as dinner, there was an increase in the waist line after our week here! Dinners where the tables were placed around the pool were lovely, it looked so gorgeous.
We ended up in a beachfront villa that was joined to another, was a bit worried about noise (after reading previous reviews) but it was no problem even though our neighbours had 2 children I never heard them. Loved being able to sit out on our deck or at the beach in front of our villa.
We played golf each day after breakfast, even though it has only very short holes it was still challanging, my golf ball seemed to be attracted to the coconut trees! Went out fishing one evening not too successful but still good.
Loved the snorkling, went out from the front of our villa and also on the other side of the island. The highlight was the free snorkling trip we went on around the small island just off Vomo, it was excellent saw lots of fish and some amazing coral.
Being just a couple we were a bit worried about there being loads of children around, even though the resort was almost full and there were a number of children it was never a problem. Never saw them in the evening and not sure where they all disappeared too during the day.
This is an excellent place to just chill out, great rooms, excellent food, lovely staff, plenty of things to do if you want too and easy access to Nadi airport.
My only complaint would be that they sent us back to Nadi airport with 5 hours to wait till our flight, they would have known our flight time and should have let us stay longer on Vomo (checkout time was 11 and we had to leave before 10?)
That said I would love to go back to Vomo again and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: I would recommend the stand alone beachfront villas

Thank you for your recent review of your holiday on Vomo. We are so pleased that we exceeded your expectations and that your entire family had such a pleasurable time with us.

We understand your comments regarding your transfer back to the mainland. Because our transfers are provided by an independent third party we try our best to book the latest possible departure transfers but sometimes due to their schedule getting out to other islands and so forth we find that the departures are a little earlier than what is ideal.

We hope that you will come back again soon to see us and that you will carry your Vomo experience with you for a while to come.

We returned a week ago from a 7 night stay at the gorgeous Vomo. The Island met our expectations beyond what we could have imagined. We flew to Nadi & caught a Helicopter to Vomo dropping a German couple off at another Island along the way. We were greeted by lovely smiling staff & welcomed warmly. We travelled with our two daughters, age 6 & 8 years old. I had been advised by friends who have now had 5 holidays at Vomo to ask for a stand-alone villa (beachfront) & we were lucky enough to be placed in one (Villa No. 15) which we realised was right next to the pool & I wondered whether we would be kept awake at night by noise but of course we weren't. Vomo is not a 'party' island but a lovely quiet, family spot. We have very, very high expectations of holiday destinations & this holiday certainly met all of our expectations. All of the staff were amazing & our meals were truly decadent. Our children are more 'basic' eaters & we found we mostly ordered them ham, cheese, tomato sangas and chips & fish, chips & salad for dinner. An eyelid was never battered ordering things that weren't on the 'kids menu'. The beachfront villa was certainly large enough with 2 children of our age & we were more than happy with it. The daily laundry service is fantastic. You put your dirty items out by 9 am & by early evening, they are returned to you freshly washed, still feeling warm, wrapped in tissue paper & left at your villa door. The Rocks Bar is a great spot to enjoy a cocktail or two in the early evening prior to dinner. One thing I can truly say, our children have never enjoyed going to any Kids Club & we do not believe in shoving them off there for our own selfish reasons, but when your children ask to go, you know it must be good. We were very impressed with the ladies in Kids Club. They loved the children & our girls loved them. I was shocked to see at times, there were 10 ladies looking after the kids no matter how few children were in. The girls enjoyed the turtles in the pool near the Activities Club. We also enjoyed our own private picnic at Little Vomo. We chose to take the girls with us & make it a family outing. The seafood picnic hamper was beautiful. I have never been somewhere with a Resort even at full capacity, where you & your partner are the only ones on the beach. It's definite 'Paradise'. The snorkelling was great & the children enjoyed kayaking & the stand up boards (with the help of Daddy). I don't know what more I can say but Wayne & Toni-Maree, the General Managers are doing a great job & I was amazed to see them each & everyday joining in with guests & making you feel very welcome. Thanks so much & I have already contacted Vomo Reservations about another Holiday in Paradise next year.

Room Tip: Villa No. 15 is great as it's a 'stand alone' villa and it's Beachfront.

Bula Miers Family! Thank you so much for your lovely review of Vomo from your recent family holiday. We are so pleased you enjoyed yourselves and that you made the most of some of the unique activities we offer on Vomo such as the Vomo Lailai picnic and our Hawksbill Turtle Protection Programme. We traveled to Vomo as a part of an extentended family group of 18, ranging in age from 3 to 70. My husband and I, and our 2 teenage daughters stayed with my in-laws in 'The Residence', a separate and large dwelling that had it's own pool and was extremely private. Even though we were in the same dwelling we were all very independent of each other with our own entrances etc.
The food was fantastic. We had quite a number of diverse dietary requirements in the group and the chef could not have been more accommodating - and produced more delicious meals for us specifically.
Activity wise there was plenty to do... Maybe a bit light on for the teenagers but they still found plenty, ranging from snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking to the neighboring island to being taught how to climb a coconut tree by the staff.
I got unexpectadly sick and had to see a dr and eventually helicopter back to Nadi.... And the staff couldn't have been more supportive.

The resort was at full capacity when we stayed but it did not feel at all crowded. Staff got to know us by name and were just exceptional.

We loved having our own pool where all the family could gather and would thoroughly recommend
this place.

Bula Happy Kiwis!
We were thrilled to read that your family enjoyed their time on Vomo and in particular, in The Residence. The Residence was actually built with multi generational parties like yours in mind so we are very pleased to hear it catered for your differing needs so well.

We agree that sometimes teenagers find the slower and more relaxed pace of Vomo not quite what they are after but it sounds as though your children made the most of the many activities we offer and we are sure the wireless broadband internet was used to fill in any gaps!

Hopefully you have made a full recovery from your illness and we hope to welcome you back to Vomo again in the future.

I had always wanted to visit Fiji and it was recommended that if I was to go that ‘a must experience’ was on Vomo Island. There are 3 options of getting to the Island from the Nandi Airport- helicopter, sea plane or boat. I opted for the helicopter and quite frankly it was one of the highlights of the trip, (you can actually visualize my helicopter ride for yourself on You Tube)- approximately 15-20 minutes of breathtaking beauty.

Ok- where do I start!!! Nothing was overlooked- the staff, the accommodation, the food…no stone was left unturned. I have stayed and travelled all over the globe and it is not often that you have the ability to sit up the bar having a cocktail and reminisce about your day with the General Managers of the resort. I found Wayne and Toni-Maree Milgate, (General Managers) to be the perfect hosts, they have an uncanny ability of making all the guests feel welcome and it was evident that they have a true passion for their work.

The staff offers the guests a feel for the Fijian culture with entertainment at night and when you arrive and depart the staff will sign to you. Not once did I ever feel that I was a bother by any one of the staff members…if you do not know the Fijian words, “Bula & Vinaka” you will by the time you leave!!!

In a nutshell my stay was nothing more than AMAZING and I say this because when I left I really could not fault my experience other than I wish I could have stayed longer. I snorkeled, fished, hiked, ate, drank and more importantly found a place I will return to because I was able to relax and unwind when I needed to.

Vomo Island is a paradise, (I kid you not) that you have to take the time to explore and experience firsthand- I wish I had discovered it sooner! I can see now why the producers of the American TV Reality show, “The Bachelorette” chose Vomo Island for is 2011 season finale. Fiji in general is beautiful, Vomo is breathtaking and this was not my last trip- I am already planning my next one.

Wow, thank you for such an enthusiastic review! You are spot on - the helicopter flight in from Nadi to Vomo is quite something and many guests would agree with you. Great to hear you have posted that on You Tube, a big vinaka for that!

Your lovely comments about our General Managers Wayne and Toni-Maree Milgate will be passed on. They do have that knack of making people feel welcome yet respecting their privacy - they are a great asset to Vomo.

We hope that you will return to our part of the world one day and again, vinaka for making the trip from the USA.

Just returned from a fantastic stay at Vomo. Everything was outstanding and meals were amazing. We travelled with our 2-year old daughter and there was plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit for her with the childrens menu providing excellent choices. All the staff were very friendly and happy to assist with any requests. Special mention and thanks to Aliti for babysitting services. Ask for a stand-alone beachfront Villa (no.7 is great) as it sounded quite noisy for those staying in adjoining Villas as they have wooden floors. Take the helicopter option as its far quicker (15mins to mainland). Book a picnic and go over to the private island for a couple of hours. Take the van to the Rocks Bar to watch the sunset if you have little ones as its a long walk for them. Also, order their dinner at around 4pm from the main restaurant and have it sent there - our little one eates at 5.30pm so it was great to have her dinner there whilst we watched the sunset and drank cocktails. Overall we adored our stay and will return.

Note to management: buy the garden crew a ride-on mower. Seeing them using weedeaters to cut the grass was demoralising but also really irritating to listen to.

Room Tip: Ask for Villa 7 (beachfront) as it is a standalone. The adjoining ones are noisy as you can hear you...

Thank you for your great review of your time with us. We are pleased you enjoyed some of our most popular activities and that you managed to get over to Vomo Lailai - it's certainly something quite special.

We understand your comments regarding the weed eaters used for cutting the grass and have discussed them with management and the landscaping staff. Our landscaping staff prefer to use these to do the grass as it allows them to get closer to the trees, maintains the equipment better (as the sandy soil and coconuts would quickly conspire against us with a ride on mower) and it is what they use on the mainland so they feel more comfortable using them. We understand the noise can be a problem and we will continue to try to minimise this for the comfort of our guests.

Vinaka and we will look forward to welcoming you back.
