“" A Island Gem in Fiji"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2008

We arrived aboard the Tiger IV to a lovely greeting by the staff singing and welcoming all new guests. Since this resort is so popular, we have found you must book ahead if you want to be part of this south pacific paradise. Our room was on the south beach and we were delighted and amazed with the size and cleanliness of the bure. Waiting for us inside was a basket of fresh fruit. They really know how to make you feel relaxed and at home in a hurry. We immediately shut off the A/C and opened the windows since a beautiful breeze flowed through the rooms. We never felt the need to turn it back on in the entire 10 days we were there. We liked the south beach because it was quiet and calm, but the north beach was also very nice, so you can't go wrong with either location. Castaway is beautiful no matter where your bure is located.

The meals were fantastic for an island paradise. I had the opportunity to take a tour of the kitchen and was amazed at how spotless and tidy everything and everybody was. Many establishments in the states should be so clean and modern. We went to breakfast every morning to a buffet of numerous choices, including fresh fruit, eggs cooked to order, bacon, sausage, cereals, and fresh baked breads and pastries. As we sat at our table overlooking the beach, the staff kept us supplied with plenty of coffee. As each guest left, the staff immediately cleaned the table and was always smiling and laughing with all of us. What a relaxing way to start the day. After beach time, snorkeling, kayaking and relaxing, it was time for lunch. Imagine our surprise that such a small island has the ability to staff and service all the guests with such competence and sincere care. And again, smiles and friendliness were bountiful from the meticulous staff.

Who can say more about dinner than to say the menu was terrific and had many choices, including beef fillet, fish, lamb etc. Sitting there under the stars in casual clothes while looking across the table at a smiling, tanned spouse I was in "paradise." This feeling wasn't possible without the friendliest staff who love to be recognized for their service by their first name. Now that is personal!

The staff at the sports shop and diving were always there to answer any questions, and I always had plenty. The sports equipment is top shelf and safety is unsurpassed when it comes to diving.

I am writing this review because I find it very unusual to see all the effort made by the management and staff of this proportion on a small south sea island. The Fijians are truly the most friendly and caring people we have ever met in our many travels. Our family comes from the states, and we are excited to be making plans to return to our "Castaway Family" again next year with three generations of our family.

By trip advisor making this a "Secret Gem of the South Pacific", our secret paradise is no longer secret!

We have just returned from a 4 nights stay on Castaway Island Resort and can only sum it up as absolutely fantastic. From the moment we were welcomed on the beach, we felt that it was going to be enjoyable. Our Beach Bure was well appointed, the yummy cocktails/food amazing and the staff – an absolute stand out. All the staff we encountered stopped for a chat and asked about our holiday on the island. The endless smiles, care and attention was never ending and was genuine - hard to experience when the resort was running at full occupancy. We thoroughly enjoyed lying back on the beach chairs/hammocks reading our books & watching the families frolic on the beach. Fiery red sunsets, balmy evenings and hot days with clear blue skies - the perfect tonic “food for the soul” - exactly what we wanted which we got back ten folds. I would highly recommend Castaway Island Resort to anyone as it was truly a beautiful experience which should be shared.

We had 8nights on Castaway. We lucked out and stayed in a bure on the south beach even though we had requested a bure on the north beach at the time of booking our holiday. Disappointed staff insisted there was no way of moving us even for a couple of nights given our length of stay, The south side isterrible very windy and tide comes up very high plusits the transport hub with seaplanes taking off outside our bure at 7.30am, workmenhanging around waiting for boats to arrive, boat loads of people arriving and departing and we even had an unsightly barge pumping outside our room for 2 days. I must say we had higher expectations for the amount of money we paid and feel duped paying for a beachside bure when we couldn't use it. In addition to that most of the staff we came across weren't very friendly and we felt like a hindrance to themwhen we asked for anything. Food was ok but a lot of people were getting sickor knew someone who was sick at some stage. Apart fromall that the north beach islovely, weather superb and the snorkelling great. Kids club is a bit drab but my son enjoyed it.

We stayed 6 nights at Castaway Island in Fiji. We have 2 children aged 4 and 9mths. We went with three other families whom are friends. Total of 7 adults and 8 children.

Overall we really enjoyed our time at Castaway.

The positives:
The staff were excellent. Very helpful, friendly and they took the time to learn about our family and friends who were also staying there. We felt welcome and they made an effort to meet our needs.
The bures were very good although our one was starting to get a little tired but nothing to complain about.
Food was very good. Certainly not amazing but good choices and the kids options were good. Pizzas were very nice.
Beach was great and so was the pool.
Kids club was very good, lots of activities and the children enjoyed it.
Babysitting was very good. We had Aloe who was very nice and very caring.
The cocktail evening was excellent on the Wednesday. Free beer and wine along with nibbles and entertainment. Very nice buffet and a great night was had.

Negatives;
If you were towards the end of the meal times then you can end up with not much to choose from or chasing staff for more items.
Prices for babysitting has gone up to $8 an hour.
Three of the 4 families did the meal plans. These have also gone up to $105 per adult per day. We all found this not worth it. It was nice not to think about the prices when you ordered but no family used up to this amount.
We were there also while a gastro bug was around. Out of the 4 families one did get hit on the last 2 days. Nothing you can do about this though so we did not worry about it to much.
Alcohol is very expensive. Beer $7 to $11 and wine anything from $45 to $100 a bottle. We picked up beer and wine from the supermarket in Nadi and had no problems taking this to the island. Deffinetly the best way to do it.

We found that the Pizzas take a long time to make. Order early. We also found lunches can drag on. We did have a large group which did not help but in talking about it afterwards we felt that to make the most of the time do the buffet lunch as if you go off the menu you could be there a while. The main improvement would be the pizzas as their syustem was not very organsied.

Overall we all would return. A very nice island that caters very well for children.

My wife and I were married at Castaway and stayed on the island for 10 days.
We had an absolutely amazing time, the staff, food, snorkeling, accommodation, and resort surrounds were all great.
The staff really went out of their way for our wedding, especially the guys in the kitchen as the food was more than we had hoped for.
Totally recommend the island for a wedding or just for a holiday.
Can't beat the sundowner beer for a pizza and a Fiji bitter after a hard day of relaxing. Snorkeling off the beach is great.
Cant wait to go back for our next holiday and we recommend Castaway for a holiday without hesitation.

Just returned from a 4 night stay at Castway. It is a beautiful island, very opulent and the Bures are lovely. We had a bure on the west side of the island with ocean views, although lovely it was very windy for the 4days and could not swim on that side. It is best to get the bure on the north beach which is a lot calmer, though these are in high demand and always booked out. The food was devine and congrats to the Chef, coming from Melbourne this was top quality resturant food and did not fail. Staff was a little slow in requests and felt that anything we requested e.g a table close to the beach we had to do several times. Kids unfortunately fell ill with gastro during our stay as it was going around on the islands. Best prepared to take all medicines. The nurse was helpful. Kids clubs was good and beaches great for snorkling. Would return if I could get a bure on the north side.

  • Liked — Food and Bures, beach
  • Disliked — Only 1 resturant on island, 1 pool no variety.

My husband, grandson (age 13) and I stayed 4 days and 3 nights in an Oceanfront bure. We were on the South beach which can be very windy. I agree with another reviewer it might be best to try to secure a bure on the North beach. We did not buy the meal plan as we had no idea what the food would be like. Ordering off the menu worked for us. All that is available for breakfast is the buffet and it was good. We stayed at the Outrigger (Castaway's sister resort) for 5 days before arriving at Castaway. While we enjoyed the beach and water activities more at Castaway, the staff at the Outrigger were far superior. Castaway staff did seem very disinterested in guests and more interested in chatting with each other. Everything is done on Fijian time so don't expect to sit down and have a drink or meal in front of you in short order. We often had to wait 10 to 15 minutes after ordering a drink to to receive it. I would visit Castaway again but wish they had the Outrigger staff.
