“Up there with the best......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

We had a family holiday for 6 nights on Castaway in September and left the island with many happy memories. I try and wait a few weeks before writing a review to put things in perspective and give a more balanced opinion. As far as family holiday destinations go, Castaway would be among the best there is in Fiji. We stayed in a beach bure on the south beach and just loved that the kids could play on the beach just a few steps from our front door. The south beach has a retaining wall to combat erosion problems so to access the water proper they have put in steps to make it easier. I still found the South beach more to my liking as it was more private with all the activities centred around the North beach and our bure (59) was as far as you could get from the reception area. The resort itself is set out such that we didn't have any have to walk more than 5 minutes to get to the pool or reception. The interior of the bure was as we expected, neat and spacious enough for our family of four. The breeze on the south beach meant we never had to use the air conditioning although we did use the fans when it got too windy to leave the louvers open at night.

The other things we liked:
1. The staff
2. Did I mention the staff?
3. Access to two beaches if one side was too windy
4. Smaller resort size = more intimate experience and no hassles getting equipment,
5. The food, especially the a la carte menu and the fresh fruit.
6. The kids club. Our two loved it and we loved the early kids dinner times which meant the grown ups could have dinner by ourselves......bliss, just bliss.
7. Lots of activities to keep everyone occupied if you were so inclined. Day trips to Mondriki island were well patronised as were the outer reef snorkelling trips.
8. Island store well stocked for emergency items.....like Cadbury chocolate!

We've had a few island holidays before so understand that being on an island means sacrificing some conveniences like supermarkets. Travelling with small children means a bit of extra preparation but on Castaway with the meal plan we found we didn't need to stock up on the snack things as much. Our one gripe would be that they need a second pool so the adults can enjoy it a bit more. I have two kids so doesn't worry me too much but if I were childless then I'd probably avoid the pool. Actually, Castaway isn't the best destination for a romantic getaway as there are places that cater for that much better. For families, its one of the best places to visit, especially while the kids are still little and get some value out of the kids club. Having stayed at Mana before, I can say confidently that Castaway is a better experience overall and you do get what you pay for in this instance. To (mis)quote Arnie.....We'll be back!

We recently returned from Castaway and decided it was the best family holiday we have ever had! Everything about Castaway was magical! The staff were wonderful and very friendly, the food was 5 star and the Bures were clean and beautiful! We enjoyed ourselves so much that we have decided to book for Christmas 2012. The children had a great time at Kids Club and swimming in the pool. Overall we highly reccomend this wonderful place to anyone who wants a relaxing family holiday! Bula!!!

Room Tip: We loved the south side of the Island it was quiet and there was a lovley breeze every afternoon.

From the moment we set eyes on the staff waiting to serenade us and other arriving guests on the beach, we were in love with Castaway. We are Fijians and live in the capital, Suva. We stayed 2 nights in Beach Bure 37, steps away from the ocean and my husband would have quite happily stayed in bed relaxing to the sounds of the waves (thank goodness for no tv, radio or phones in the bure). But I just had to sample everything; so we went on the bush walk to the highest point of the island, we snorkelled in the marine reserve just meters from the beach, we kayaked around the island and I went diving. We loved Chef Lance's specialities. The best part of our stay was the staff - there was such a relaxed feeling about them, none of that "corporate stress" you get in bigger hotels and resorts. We felt we were at a big family reunion and staff we'd only just met felt like long time friends in a matter of minutes, so much so that we've kept in close touch with a few of the staff since our return to the "big smoke." We are definitely returning as soon as we can.

Room Tip: As there were just the two of us, Bure 37 was divine, nice and breezy and would have happily slept w...

By far one of the best places we have ever stayed. We had a Beach Bure, just steps from the ocean! Amazing. Spacious for our family of four, one baby at the time! The kids loved the kids club, our daughter would say "where's my Bula babysitter?" Loved the early childrens dinner, then off to kids club so mom and dad could enjoy dinner!! So great! We have traveled a lot, but we speak so highly of your place and do hope to return!! One of our favourite family vacations ever! Staff friendly!! Nothing but good things to say!
We were there July 2010!!!

Vinaka Sfinsoul, We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to upload this post and provide feedback. Its lovely to know you enjoyed your stay. We received an official AAA 4 star rating and are very happy with that. However, we'll always continue to strive for those 6 stars in everything we do and are very 'chuffed' that you thought we deserve more!

It's a beautiful island and the staff are mostly great- but 3 sets of friends and us had kids be very sick there last summer, and we all went at different times. The hygiene standards need urgent attention, food is left out too long and having a sick kid really spoils your holiday.

The kids club is for under 7s really-'any older and they'll be bored off their tree.

It's a lovely place, it really is but the bures are tired and so are the staff.

We do have stringent hygiene standards in place and go to great lengths throughout the resort operation to ensure all guest facilities and amenities, and this includes our restaurant and bar outlets, are of the highest standards. Our Kids Club for ages 3 years and over is renowned as ‘the place to be’ for children. Therefore you would understand that we are disappointed to read your comments.

During buffet meal service all cold food preparations are placed on refrigerated or ice filled stainless steel display tables to ensure food is kept chilled. Food is refreshed constantly throughout the service period. Hot preparations are held at appropriate temperature in ‘bain maries’ fitted with lids. Our hygiene standards are exemplary as attested to by the Ministry of Health.

Unfortunately, and from time to time, guests do arrive on our island with illnesses. It is extremely difficult to prevent a virus from being passed around, particularly by children. Our staff are trained and diligent in terms of cleaning procedures for restaurant tables and children’s highchairs after each meal service, using approved cleaning products.

Last year, perhaps post your stay, we completed a complete accommodation refurbishment including stunning new bathrooms throughout all bure categories and we are pleased to note we have received overwhelming recognition and praise for the works undertaken.

We do take your constructive comments on board and will continue to strive even harder. It is gratifying to note that we have maintained a 93% approval rating on Trip Advisor and the highest returnee rate for any island resort and we will continue to work hard to maintain this record.

We stayed for 5 nights in a Beach Bure with our 2 daughter (6 and 3) and really loved our stay.
Our Bure was on the windy side of the island however i actually preferred this as there was always a nice breeze to sit out front on the beach and read a book with. Its was only a 2 min walk to the restaurant/pool so that was no concern for us.

I found the accommodation comfortable and appropriate for such a relaxed place (although a more private bathroom door might of been nice - being able to see straight through to the toilet from the bed is a little disconcerting!)

The beach is beautiful and the pool is nice although i think it would do with retiling (lots of bits falling off) and they need quite a few more sunloungers (or maybe a seperate kids pool would be a good idea!),
I found the staff to be all very friendly and helpful and usually reasonably timely with the exception of a few fiji time moments.

The food was good-average depending on the dish/day - didn't get to try the pizza as on the last night when we went there it was shut for some reason!

My husband did some dives which he enjoyed. We didn't try any other activites - unfortunately the Glass bottom boat trip we would of liked to have done with the kids we tried to book and i was told the boat was out of action - they then proceeded to tell me it had been broken for 2 years!

Kids club was great - my kids made lots of friends there and the staff were very friendly and made the girls feel welcome. The activities are sometimes a bit disorganized and the facilities at first glance very basic but the kids always enjoyed themselves and the staff are lovely. The only thing i would say is that on days when they schedule a pool swim in the kids club i would tag along or not send your very young kids - the older swimmers all played a noisy game of something or other with one of the staff however while the young kids were put in life vests and were mostly supervised i did see the carer leave at one point to take one of the kids to the loo...that makes me a bit nervous even with life vests!

Overall i loved Castaway - for me spending my time in such a relaxed atmosphere was just bliss!

Dear Mel Lyn 9
Thanks so much for your feedback on your recent stay.
You’ll be pleased to know that we are building a new family pool environment with a 20 metre free form swimming pool and additional food and beverage outlet, that are due for completion in late November. In early 2012, we will then do a makeover of our original Castaway pool to provide an adults haven. There will be plenty of sun lounges to accommodate everyone.

The glass bottom boat has unfortunately been out of action for several months now and is being repaired at the moment. We will get this back in the water as soon as possible.

We’ve highlighted the importance of supervision to our Castaway Kids Club carers and appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

We are glad you and your family enjoyed the Castaway hospitality and hope we can welcome you back soon to see our stunning new Nuku Marau pool, bar and grill.

This was our 2nd time on Castaway and we were not disappointed. Our two daughters, aged 7 and 10 had a wonderful experience. The staff were very friendly and warm from the moment we arrived until the time we left (a total of 9 days).

The food was delicious, you will never get bored eating the same thing over and over - just be careful with quantities, the scales will not like you on your return!

The bures are very traditional with tapa ceilings and are beautifully appointed inside. I would say they are perfect for a family of four and are kept spotless daily.

If you are looking for a complete getaway from the modern world (no TV in room, no phones in room - although mobiles make this impossible in this day and age) this is the holiday destination I recommend.

Whilst we were there another pool was in construction and this new pool is going to become the "kid's pool". My husband and I were totally amazed at how unobtrusive the building works were to guests, most of the work was being done by hand, a testimony to the owner of Castaway who really would like his guest's to have a wonderful relaxing island experience.

We hope to return for a 3rd visit in the near future.
