We booked 3 nights on Mana Island and had to stay on Denarau Island for the rest of our holiday, as Mana was fully booked - I wish we could have stayed longer!
This was the true Fiji and so different from the luxury hotels on Denarau. We LOVED it!
We arrived by ferry together with about 50 other guests and expected a nightmare for check-in but they did it all (the whole lot!) in about 20 minutes - from getting off the ferry to walking in to our air-conditioned Island Bure. How's THAT for service! Amazing!
We could not fault a thing - our whole stay was just absolutely fantastic! We absolutely loved the outdoor shower - I want one at home! Even though the resort was fully booked it never felt crowded and we never had to wait for any service.
We personally felt that the meal deal was not worth the amount - especially with their prices over the Christmas period being increased quite a bit. We are not big eaters and it would have been a waste, so we enjoyed the buffet breakfast and ordered from the room service menu for our other meals. If you have kids, they eat for free on your meal deal, so in that case it would be worth it. We did have the Christmas dinner there (F$75 per person), which was fantastic - too much to even try everything! While we were there, the normal price for breakfast went from $F33 to $F40 per person over Christmas. Still, converting it back to AUD, it is not bad.
We also tried the backpackers for dinner one night and although it was dirt cheap, it was not worth it. I ordered lamp chops, which was more like osso bucco and mostly bone & gristle. The fries have seen oil more than a couple of times. Hubby ordered fish of the day and could not eat it, as it tasted "funny". Hubby eats everything that stays on his plate long enough (mopani worms, crocodile, snake, you name it...) so for him to push his plate back was a very rare. We went back to our room and ordered pizza.
Every evening there is entertainment in the main lounge area from 9pm and it is for the whole family (I've never seen so many kids on a dance floor!) We loved the Fijian Dancing!
There are heaps to do on the island but we spent our time mostly snorkeling and took some awesome underwater photos! We walked to Sunset Beach with a bottle of champers and 2 glasses to enjoy the sunset but unfortunately, as we walked, the clouds got thicker and in the end we only saw a glimmer of a sunset. As we were only there for 3 nights, this was our last chance to see the sunset, so if you're going to Mana Island, I suggest you go to Sunset beach early on in your holiday so in case it is not a good one, you can always go again. On our way back from Sunset Beach we took a shortcut and ended up in a little village where two girls showed us a path which would get us back to the resort - over a rocky hill, in the dark, quite an adventure....! Good thing I could not see cause if I knew about all the crabs & critters around me, I'd probably freak out!
Another highlight was a walk to the lookout - definitely a must do and I'm pretty sure you'd see a lovely sunset from there too, as it gives you 360 degree views over the island.
Being there over Christmas was definitely a lovely experience! To be serenaded early in the morning on Christmas day by the voices of the Fiji staff was such a wonderful way to wake up! Although they had to work on Christmas day to make our holiday memorable, they did it with so much love!
We will go back there anytime - it is definitely one of our favorite holiday experiences! This is not the Sofitel, but it is the true Fiji! You haven't truly experienced Fiji if you haven't stayed on one of the Islands.
