“Great Resort and Fantastic Staff!”

The Resort Walu Beach

Los Angeles
Dec 7, 2006

I stayed at the resort at the end of August 2006 and had a fantastic stay! The resort was pretty nice and there was always something to do, though I suggest spending as much time in the hammocks as possible - very relaxing! There is a cute little store with various toiletries and gifts, an outdoor pool and spa, pool table, ping-pong, giant board games, free kayaking, snorkeling, Hobbie boats, low-priced scuba diving (even a shark dive), and numerous hammocks and beach loungers available. They also offer professional hour or half hour massages for a *very* low price (about $28 US for an hour!)

Upon arrival (and departure, for that matter) the staff comes out and welcomes you with songs and open arms, unloads the boat for you and places your luggage in your room (even if you are staying in the dorms). The dorms are comfortable (6 beds per room) but there are no doors to the building and the individual rooms only have a curtain. It was very humid when I was there and I had NO problems with mosquitos. The staff even puts flowers on the bed when you arrive! The bathrooms had a few problems (plumbing was a slight problem, but did not detract from my stay at all!). That is to be expected on a small island.

The food and bar were fantastic! Food was provided 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), all buffet style with great options for different tastes. The dinners were especially good, with the choice of beef, lamb, fish, and/or chicken every night with varioius salads, side dishes and deserts. The bar is great and the bartenders really know how to make a good drink! Good prices on the liquor as well! There are also nightly activities such as hermit crab racing, cane toad racing, dancing, kareoke, a kava drinking ceremony (you can't go to Fiji and not drink Kava!), and a large performance by the staff once a week.

Overall, this is not only a fantastic budget accommodation, but a great resort as well! I would reccommend staying there even if you aren't on a budget! Friendly staff and great ammenities!

“Relaxing but not a good value for the price”

We stayed at the Walu Beach Resort the last 2 days of our vacation in Fiji. We booked this "resort" based on the 4 star rating, its amenities and its price. We stayed in a beach front bure.

The Bad: The ads say this is Malolo's newest resort, which is sort of a lie. It was formally a time share, and I would say about 20 years old. The rooms were old and musty. As other reviewers posted, the food and service was poor. There was only one restaurant/bar that was open. The food selections were limited and not very appetizing. The pool and whirlpools were very dirty. Mosquitos are a big problem night and day at this resort. I had a massage and it was given in the storage area of the gift shop, amongst the Coke boxes. We wanted to dive on one day, but the dive shop people never showed up. There is a fee for eveything except the snokeling and kayaks.

The Good: There is great snokeling just in front of the hotel. The hammocks in front of the beach were great for relaxing. Even though this was a partial backpacker resort, I was happy that there were people other than honeymooners. There was alot of places to kayak to. It is a quiet, small and peaceful location. I saw a few other resorts and they were packed with people and kids.

The End: For the money Walu beach was not worth it. We paid $400 a night without meals or transfers. But we did book last minute and did not call around for deals. Although it was OK for 3 days, it was not worth the money. If you are a backpacker or if you get a good package deal, it is probably worth it.

“Had a lovely visit”

My husband, 2 daughters (15 and 1 year old) and I stayed at the Resort at Walu Beach last July/Aug. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed our stay.
Our travel agent got us an upgrade to the beachfront bures, and ours was fantastic. The bedroom was separated from the lounge room, and it had a separate toilet area, with a nice bathroom. We could sit on the verandah looking out to the ocean, or walk few feet down to our hammock. The fly screens were very handy, too.
Each evening 2 people came and serenaded us outside our room.
I agree that the meals were slow to be served, but once we figured that out we simply took a book or a game to play. It didn't bother us, because, what the heck - we were on holiday! We were quite happy to adjust to Fiji Time. The staff were lovely and quite helpful. Perhaps if you are a regular visitor to Fiji, you may have found much better places. But for our first visit we were thrilled - it was just as we imagined it would be.
We went on to stay up in a village on Naviti after that (Malevu), and I would certainly recommend that as a cultural experience. Lovely people. Very simple accommodations though, and not the place to go for a luxurious island holiday, if that's what you're after. But if you have a little time, that's the way to get to know the real Fiji.
All in all, a fantastic trip to a beautiful country! Planning our next trip right now!

absolutely fanatsic little resort. great value for money as the meal plans were included in the price we paid for the accomodation. stayed in the hillside lodges, had our own private room with an ensuite, and a communal loung area. the meal plan is 3 meals a day from a set menu, each meal there is at least 3 different meals to choose from so to cater to all tastes. and the food was excellent. lovely flavours and generous sizing!
we have been to fiji 4 previous times and stayed in 6 different resorts, although this on was a lot smaller and less glamourous than the others it was still just as enjoyable. the staff there were by far the freindliest we have ever come across! they were always up for some fun and a chat and they went out of their way to always make sure we were comfortable and having a good time. we did have a small problem with the power going off one night but it was quickly resolved. the only other thing i didnt like about it was that it has no air conditioning, which made it hard to sleep the first couple of nights but then i got used to it.
the mojority of the people there were backpackers so i would recommend this place to other backpackers as it has that sort of fun atmosphere!
the island itself is lovely. the free hobbie cats and canoes were great too. it has a lovely little reef just off shore which was great to canoe over to see all the fish and other sea creatures.
although the rock bar was only open 1 night during the 5 nights we were there the other bar was nice too, although the rock bar is amzaing, but as i said before it is only a small resort and can not staff both bars all ngihts. the rock bar is save for special occassions.
i would definately recommend this place for those looking to travel on a budget but to still have a great time. great for backpackers! fun fun fun!

This place was the pits - the worst backpacker I have ever stayed in.

It all started out ok - fast transfer in the resort boat, welcomed to the island by serenading staff and big smiles and then it went downhill fast. It took over 2 hours to check in - no explanations given - just what was to become a common answer from the staff....come back in half an hour. Fair enough I thought - then into lunch which took another 2 hours - again a common feature of my 5 days on the island. The food itself was pretty bad and gave more than one person the need to go running off to the loo every 5 minutes! The portion sizes were tiny so if you are going would suggest you bring some supplies of your own.

The dorms - 6 beds in each and quite spacious with comfy mattresses. That's the positive....no doors or ceiling so basically no protection from the mozzies who had open access from both ends of the main structure.

After a couple of days in the dorms was asked to move to a lodge to make way for a large group of incoming american guests - thought that this was a real bonus.....given my own room and only had to share the bathroom with 3 others - that's if there had been any water! Couldn't shower, brush my teeth or even flush the toilet - made for very hygienic circumstances! Numerous complaints later and still nothing was done - off the 10 lodges at least 4 were in a similar situation. A couple who had the audacity to complain slightly more vocally were threatened with the police! The manager realising her mistake, plied them with cocktails the next day in the hope that that may repair some of the damage.

The beach is basically like concrete with extremely sharp rocks.

On the plus side the snorkelling is pretty good if you go out f
urther - close to shore most of the coral is dead. And contrary to what their website says the Hobbie sailing is not free - they charge $20 per hour.

In summary - don't waste your money and go somewhere else.
