“An Amazing Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2010

Malolo Island Resort was the perfect end to our honeymoon. We stayed here 4 nights after we had traveled to Sydney and New Zealand. The people were extremely friendly and welcoming. Our bure was amazing right in front of the beach. The kids program here is great and that is why it is great for families. If you don't mind kids being around then this is the place to stay.

From descent in the sea plane into the iconic Jetty at Malolo Is, it was obvious this place is absolute paradise! In my option the only way to arrive !!!
I expected or should I say I hoped this would be the case as I had spent alot of time researching and speaking to friends, travels experts etc to try and find the perfect tropical Is for us !!
Lets just say all the effort paid off on every level - Malolo was everything I hoped and so much more !!!
Must be noted that this Island really lends itself to young families everything it offers from Kids club to pool really suits young families , this said we spoke to many couples and honeymooners and they seemed to enjoying as well !!!!

We travelled there with out 2 daughters ( 6 & 2 years old ) for 10 wonderful night absolute minimum to really relax and get into the island way and they loved, just as much as us !!!
Firstly Accommodation we stayed in the Deluxe Ocean view Bure Num 11 and I would totally recommend, and stay there again the rooms are very spacious compared to other resorts on the coral coasts and are tastefully decorated and fitted with everything you need ,recently refurnsished. The veranda is gorgeous and only 10 steps from the beach, the Bar and your hammock many an afternoon was lazed away here , not too noisy at all... and the view heaven !!! Though as far as I was concerned all the Bure's were great and all had great views some slightly better than others.

Food was awesome especially for an island the Beach bar fantastic and the Cocktails are great - Happy Hour every night an absolute must - which includes torch lighting ceremony and the sunset ..............ahhh!!!
I loved the kids lunches the toasted S/W are otta this world gotta say I started having them for lunch !!! We did the meal plane breaky and Dinner and that was awesome Breaky was great everything u would expect and a Bonus the egg cook Umesh he does the best omelettes ever and is a top guy !! Dinners we had at the Terrace were unreal the theme nights every few nights were great as well ( The Mongolian BBQ ) my absolute favourite !! Also a tip our 2 years old did not really get into kids club or should I say having to have a Nanny so she would have dinner with us so on the last night we enjoyed the sea food platter down in the terrace restaurant as opposed to where it is usually served up in the Treetops Restaurant so to accommodate our daughter very appreciated and let me say fantastic platter caught fresh out front was fantastic Our 2 year old loved Dinner time she used to float around the restaurant talking to everyone and then dancing for Freddy and the band they were great every-night they would serenade us through dinner - then some night they have games and activities, lots of fun if u participate, and Crab racing was an absolute highlight, for the whole family as well !!!

Kids Club - The ladies there ALa and Tima and TerrI are just wonderful and really love the kids and enjoy teaching them activities but I can see what another person said about the care sometimes young kids were put in front of the TV basically there standards and procedures are not as full on as ours and you have to be aware of this, and remember u r in Fiji. that is why they have a dedicated Nanny if the child is under 4 so they can have that 1 on 1 care !! My older daughter enjoyed going but once she had done all the things which range from day activities to fire light ceremony and nights to early dinners and the evening kids clubs and putting on concerts and dancing at night she was happy to be with us and then her an a older friend used to just play near us and we would allow them a little bit of freedom, what u would never do at home but u get relaxed and enjoy the ease of everything !! Unfortunately our 2 year was not much of a fan, she stayed a couple of times but would not go at night which was fine we were not going to push her its there holidays as well and we all enjoyed being together and luckily my girls were happy staying up till 9.00pm at night that said most of the friends we made there kids were back asleep being baby-sit.

Pools are great but not the oasis with all the bells and whistles that u come to get at resorts, the first one is greatly designed for the little ones and then a lovely one for the adults just above it and honestly with a gorgeous beach at your front door u did not need anymore !! But I could understand what reviewers have said about older kids the litte kids pool is abit young for them as the deep end is quite small and they are not allowed in the adults pool !!!

The beach is gorgeous can get abit rough underfoot at low tide or wading but grab some flippers oh another tip we always bring our own mask and snorkel and off u go the fish are absolutely breathtaking, I have done abit of snorkelling and the coral is not as good but the fish are otta this world and right off the beach , our 6 years old loved as well !! We also loved the sea kayaks and sailing boats enjoyed using them everyday could idea to book the catamarans, can get busy!!!

We went out on the dolphin safari and had a ball unbelievably we did not see dolphins, very rare but still had a ball they took us to a few other great spots and then we went to the Malolo Sandbar which was otta this world amazing as someone sail all u needed was a bar and u would have been set !!! Was truly that gorgeous sand bar paradise rising out of the ocean shallow enough for the kids to stand and play and the snorkelling was phenomenal the fish was like I had never experienced before - a must do !!!

Day spa is absolutely gorgeous with its setting nestled in the trees and Sofie and the girls do an awesome job my whole family enjoyed going there - they have a kids menu which the girls loved !!!

Apart from the idyllic setting what makes this resort are Firstly the staff they are amazing and I know its so know cliched when u say u feel like family when u arrive , but they are an absolute asset to the resort additional to who I have already mentioned Mai in housekeeping is an absolute Star !!! Secondly the beautiful friends we made whilst there honestly did not expect to meet so many wonderful families, we enjoyed many great night's sitting our under the stars drinking cocktails whilst the kids slept in the bure's beside us , We all loved it and have remained in contact.

Honestly I could go on forever, ( think I have ) the place is paradise especially for young children my eldest at 6 was one of the oldest expect this would be different in school hols, our first week was very quiet but got busier in the 2nd week !! They have everything u would want in a resort but still with the heart of a small resort, which they are, u really do get the best of it all !!! Last tip u r on an island with no Dr so stock up on all your medicines can make or break a holiday !!!

We honestly had the most relaxing and wonderful Family Holiday on a tropical Island without any of the day to day stresses of cars cooking cleaning running around school pick ups ...........what more can u want !!!

Go and enjoy the Malolo magic .... we will definitely be back Vinaka

This resort has it all. Beautiful location, sensational staff and lovely bures. We stayed here with friends for my husbands 40th birthday. The staff went out of their way to make his birthday special and nothing was ever a problem. From the moment we were greated on the jetty with the welcome song to the farewell song as we sadly left the service was second to none. We had come here after a stay at a large resort in Denerau and the difference was astounding. Everything was much cheaper here than Denerau. We enjoyed reasonably priced drinks and I frequented the spa everyday (highly recommended). The kids club was wonderful with daily organised activities (no extra cost to join in) . The food was lovely and having a few different choices of restaurant included in our meal package was a welcome variation to our main land experience. The house keeping staff were a wonder with our bures being cleaned and serviced twice a day. If you are looking for a place to relax and unwind this is it! The kids loved it and so did we. Can't wait to return.

We had 6 nights at Malolo and had wondeful time and a much needed break from the Aussie Winter - the resort was welcoming and the staff extemly friendly and warm - the rooms were beautifully appointed and spacious - we were with our two children (ages 6 and 8) and had the Oceanview Bure which very adequate for us, the beds are all new and comfortable ( the bedlinen is a bit hard and not as soft and one would like) the bathroom is new with a big shower with ample hot water and good water pressure - the towels are plentiful and refreshed daily. THere is a small fridge in each room as well as tea and coffee supplies etc. Comfortable wicker chairs are outside on the verandah and are an excellent spot for a quiet evening sundowner. All Bures have ocean view and the sunsets are spectacular.
The food is very good - we did the full meal plan which does not offer any extra value and was perhaps too much food. They should look for a better system for the meal plan as despite being on the plan you still have to sign for all you meals (food and drinks) as if you were being charged for them - so it can get a bit confusing.
The only down side was too many small babies and toddlers - so can get noisy in the resturants and around the pool etc - next time we will go in school holidays when there are most likely to be more school aged children and less infants.
Each Bure shares a common wall with the bure next door and there is hardly any sound installation at all - we had a very small baby and a young toddler next to us and both chidlren cried a lot and it was not very pleasant for us who wanted some peace and quite and we did not enjoy being woken at 6am by loud crying. We asked to change rooms but in this instance the reception staff were not very accommodating and we were told that it would be too much work for them to move us!!!!
It would be better if they put all the families with babies and toddlers in the same area of the resort to avoid this problem and we were not the only people who found all the cyring a little annoying after a while !!
We will go back again but keen to try a resort at one of the Yasawa islands next !

From the minute we arrived, we loved every part of Malolo Island Resort. We were greeted with such warmth and hospitality. The friendly smiling faces of the Fijian people that worked at the Resort made us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

We travelled with our 2 young boys (ages 2 and 5), so wanted to spend time with them, as well as letting them go and explore with the Kids Club whenever they wanted. The Kids Club program (and the teachers - Teri and Sara) is the best we have seen in Fiji. We have stayed at 7 hotels/resorts in Fiji over the last 4 years, and this has been the most wonderful of all. Our 2 year old required a babysitter (FJD$8 p/h) whenever he was in the Kids Club* with his big brother, and there was never any problem requesting one, even last minute. We had the same babysitter most nights for our 2 year old - Sue - and she was fantastic!

The restaurants were all really great. We were on a meal plan which we booked with our travel agent before we left Australia. We ate in all 3 restaurants and were never left unsatisfied. Treetops Restaurant (adults only) was really quiet, which was lovely when we wanted to get away from everyone else's kids (our kids were always in the Kids Club when we were having dinner - it's where they wanted to be). The Terrace Restaurant was also lovely. The best place to eat was outside under the palm trees and the stars. The chocolate macadamia brownie dessert was to die for. YUM! We had a few lunches at the Beach Bar and they were all delicious as well.

The Kids Dinner was at 5.30 every night, and they all sat together on one long table (made from deck chairs end on end with a Fijian tablecloth and place mats on top). The kids sat on soft mats, and it was really fun and easy for them. They have highchairs for the little ones that want to escape all the time like mine. Dinner was all ordered before 4pm at the Kids Club, so when the kids arrived, it was time to eat. Then after dessert, off to Kids Club they went for lots of night time activities until 9pm (or earlier if you wish).

The snorkeling was really great, for us it was comparable to Castaway where we stayed last year. There was and abundance of fish and coral, so we each snorkeled about 3 times a day, often with our 5 year old boy in tow. The beach was really lovely, but at low tide, quite rocky from the broken coral pieces on the low tide line. We didn't get any coral cuts, but I saw lots of people wearing aqua shoes at low tide. There were always sun lounge chairs and hammocks available at all times of the day, so we got in some relaxation as well.

We all went on the Dolphin Safari which was a lot of fun. They are quick little guys, but we followed a few in our boat. Our driver Semi was hilarious at chasing them. On the way back, we stopped at Malolo Sandbar for a snorkel. It was amazing how, as the tide goes down, this sandbar appears and suddenly there is this new little island for us to stand on in the middle of the ocean. The snorkeling was really great there too.

The Bure we stayed in was really lovely. We stayed in an Oceanview Bure and we were more than satisfied. It was air-conditioned and all really tastefully decorated. The housekeeping staff were always around if you needed anything. (There are no phones or TV in the Bure's which was awesome!) I am not sure about the other Bure's but ours only had a shower - no bath. Not a big deal for us. The bathrooms were all nicely renovated and new.

The only downside of the whole time we were there was that there were tons of mozzies in the evenings, the rooms have insect repellant under the sink in the bathroom, as well as in the restaurants, for all to use. There is a "Mozzie Man" that goes around each day spraying insecticide, so most nights it was fine. Not sure if he did it every day though, some nights the mozzies were quite hungry.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and will book again to go next year. It is just really easy with the kids. Will skip Denarau next time though, and stay twice as long on the Island (10 nights). We are all quite over Denarau and the big hotels. Malolo had the right feel of a beautiful small island for us, and much friendlier, you are known by your first name almost instantly.

We love Malolo Island Resort and can't wait to go back!!

Vinaka Vakalevu Malolo!

*Kids Club was for 4-12 years old. Under 4 required a one on one babysitter (FJD$8 p/h)

We had 5 nights here at Malolo Island Resort with 2 children; 11 and 12 years. This resort is to be highly recommended.

Food is fantastic for Fiji. Do not miss the Lovo Banquet and the Mongolian BBQ. Breakfast buffet was faultless. Wonderful outdoor seating. Beachside restaurant is quite good too. Real cocktails- unlike others I have experienced at other Fiji islands. Did not try the adults only restaurant but I assume it was from the one kitchen.

Stayed in an Ocean View Bure- No.11 - excellent because it was close to amenities for children to walk to and fro by themselves. However, it does have the kids club behind it. I became a bit sick of waking up to Humpty Dumpty, but really I should have been up by then anyway. The bed is new and comfortable but quite soft. The children had comfortable beds in a separate 'room'. The bathroom was excellent with plentiful hot water, and no unpleasant smells that we have experienced at other Fiji islands.
There are lots of toddlers here. They are really not intrusive at all though. I glanced at the kids club dinner on the pool deck and it looked brilliant - real food- not just nuggets and chips. If I had toddlers I would definitely go to this resort, though I did not hear about the actual care given it looked fairly good.

The half-day trips to the sand bar and dolphin watching are great. These trips are extra but rather cheap compared to Qld tours. We also did a magnificent snorkeling trip out to 'The Great Barrier Reef'. The coral was wonderful. We were supposed to see enormous fish, rays etc but didn't. It didn't actually concern me though as the coral stacks were amazing. If you do this trip with children take life jackets for them to swim in as you are in the middle of nowhere when you jump out of the boat!

You need coral shoes at this resort as the beach and water can be very rough particularly on winter feet. Snorkeling off the beach is tide dependent, but the reef is always accessible off the pier. The dive company offered reasonable rates and excellent equipment and instruction. The sea kayaks are absolutely brilliant. They are free and there are a lot of them. There are too few sun lounges on the beach- only 2 per bure and there were 4 of us. This was a little annoying at times. The pools are not exceptional but really who goes to Fiji to sit in a pool? Our children were too old for the toddlers in the kids pool but technically not allowed in the adults pool.

If you want great pools go to The Sheraton at Denarau where we went next for 4 nights . Pool hopping between 3 resorts was fun but you may as well have been in any country - quite soulless and there is no beach to speak of. It is very expensive and the food is not outstanding. We did have a lovely dinner in Nadi at Saffron (taxi $12 each way and the driver waited while we ate).

We also did a tour of the local village from Malolo Island Resort. It was ok. It could have been much better if they had included perhaps a local meal rather than the obligatory kava tasting ceremony. We also did a tour on the mainland which was absolutely exceptional. This was booked at the Sheraton Tour desk. It was the pm half day tour to a local village for lunch and a walk through the rainforest. We were the only people on the tour. The guide Adam was fantastic and explained the medicinal properties of many plants en route. We also ate on the floor in his house and later swam at a waterfall. The Chief actually drove us home via the mud pools where we had a good laugh and also a $10 massage each under the trees. The website is < www.fijiecotours.net >. This was the real Fiji and next time we hope to stay in a village and of course later chill again on an island.

Overall a brilliant holiday.

We loved every minute of our 5 nights at Malolo. It is a great resort.

With many families there with young kids it was perhaps not ideal for the honeymooner - but the staff were so friendly, the food surprisingly consistently excellent (although the emal plan is no particualr value) and the accomodation spotless and elegant.

The only slight downsides if I were to be picky were the beach and the shallows are a little hard on the feet (reef shoes for the whole family is a good idea) . The other downside is the kids club - the activities were fine but outside the specific activity times our 2 children appeared to be mainly shoved in front of the tv for the few 2 hour stints we used the club for. They got sick of that as they are only 1 and 3 and get very little TV at home and it was a bit disappointing that this seemed to be the deafult option by the nannies.

But other than those 2 downsides a really great holiday location with enormous friendliness and good service ethic and high standards.
