“Fantastic family break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

We returned to Malolo for our second visit with our children ages 12 and 14. The Island resort has been beautifully upgraded since our last stay. We stayed in a Deluxe Ocean front Bure. It was beautifully presented. We were welcomed back to the Island with a lovely bottle of French Champagne and a huge fruit platter. The staff were super friendly and within what seemed like hours were calling us by our names. Our children got a real kick out of "Bula Family" whenever we sat down at the restaurant or beach bar.

The snorkeling is second to none so close to the island and accessed just by simply walking off the beach. Our family had great fun utilising all the equipment they could, such as stand up paddle boards and kayaks.

We did the meal plan as we are classified now as four paying adults. It was definitely worth the money for us. Our only complaint would be that it would be nice to be provided with a large bottle of water for the rooms each day. I would be happy to pay for any supplementary bottles but not having at least one bottle of water provided seems a little mean. We bought six large bottles which came to $FJD60 to get us through.

The spa treatments were wonderful and I would highly recommend the pedicures.

This Island really does offer a fantastic family holiday. I would come back here anytime.

Room Tip: All rooms here have views of the beach. I would choose to have my room around bure 25.

We spent four nights at Malolo Island Resort in October 2013 and really enjoyed our stay. There were four of us, 2 adults and 2 boys (7 and 9). We got the earliest boat we could from Denarau and enjoyed the trip. We were prepared for not being able to check in until later, so had our swimmers and change of clothes handy - thanks to a previous tip from a TA reviewer. We had the most basic room but it suited us perfectly, since so little time was actually spent in the room. The outlook from each bure is perfect, with each of them being a stone's throw from the beach. Our boys loved going to kids club (which surprised me a little), and we all enjoyed the water activities. I got into the Stand Up Paddle boarding and we had a few goes on the Hobbie Cat. The staff were very pleasant as were the other guests. I highly recommend stocking up on some snacks at the supermarket at the marina before coming to the island, it's nice not having to rely on the restaurant all the time. I was sad to leave and we all talk about wanting to go back one day. Just remember to get into Fiji time once you arrive and you should have a great time!

Wow, what an incredibly beautiful island! The staff here are just amazing and are so genuine. They are such happy, humble, hard working people and make you feel so welcome. The rooms here are all amazing. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded into a Family bure for our first 2 nights. If you can ever afford it then absolutely book one of these as they are simply stunning , spacious and so luxurious. Having said that our Deluxe Ocean view bure was also lovely with plenty of space and the views from every bure are incredible. We started out in the family bure nearest to the sports amenities and that was busy with lots going on around us but lots of fun. We were then moved further down, almost to the end of the island and that was so much quieter and also beautiful so it depends on how much you want going on around you as to what side of the island you should ask for. We didn't opt for the meal plan and were so pleased that we didn't as we managed to eat for half the price of the meal plan and that was including our drinks. We took our own cereal for breakfasts and bought milk/drinks for the children at Denerau port before we boarded the ferry. We packed lots of snacks from home and ate lunch at the beach bar daily then tried out each of the 3 restaurants for dinners each night. The meal plan was going to cost our family $630 FJD per day (3 adults and 1 child) but you would be hard pressed to spend this even if you had a full buffet breakfast, lunch and 3 course meal each night. If money is no problem for you then go for it but you'll end up eating too much for the sake of it. The Tree tops restaurant is just amazing...5 star service and exquisite food. The menu changes daily but it's only for 13yrs plus. There are 2 pools and the better one is for 18+ which we thought was a real shame as our children are 12 and 14 and the other pool is full of young children. It didn't really matter though as you tend to spend your days using all the free non motorised equipment...kayaks/paddle boards and catamarans. There is plenty of action with beach volleyball and touch rugby. A sheet gets delivered to your room each night with a list of free activities to join in the next day. We have stayed at Castaway before and think the snorkelling is better over there but the rooms are definitely brighter and more luxurious on Malolo. We took an organised snorkelling trip out to Castaway Wall and that was fantastic. There seemed to be lots of young families at Malolo and the kids club looked amazing but didn't apply to us. There were older couples/families too but not so many teenagers. We were lucky to meet another family with teenagers but I'd say the several adult only areas puts some families off. We sneaked into the adults pool and the adults only chess/reading room a couple of times as there was no one else in them. This was one of our best family holidays and we have travelled a lot. The children didn't want to leave and we can't wait to go back. Don't even bother staying in Denerau...go straight to the island.

Room Tip: All rooms are amazing. The Deluxe Ocean View has a little more space. Family rooms are stunning.

I am an absolute fan of this resort! The room was beautifully renovated and I loved the added bonus of the kids having their own beds (that were used as couches during the day which is a great design). We were a family of 4 staying in the same room but the layout is such that you feel as if you have enough space. The beach is so wonderfully close to the front of the bures that I could sit on the porch and watch the kids play. The resort is modern and fresh, lovely restaurants with good food, lovely buffet breakfast, cocktails and beach bar food. The kids club was awesome, good activities (loved volleyball) and a team of staff that were friendly and wonderfully helpful! If you are visiting and have some spare luggage space, take some extra kids clothes, toys and books for the kindy, school or lovely families located on the island. I have stayed at many Fijian resorts before but this one rates the highest. The resort owners are very lucky to have such a great team.

Room Tip: Our bure was located next to the beach bar and restaurant. Fine for us (kids 6 and 8). We had the...

Just back from 10 days in Fiji. We spent the first 3 nights at Malolo and so wished we had spent the whole holiday there. Once you adjust to doing things in Fiji time this place was amazing everything you could wish for in a holiday, great service, beautiful accommodation (kids didn't even care that there was no TV), wonderful food and the beach was just amazing. The swimming is great, some of the best coral and fish spotting right at your doorstep. Reef shoes would have been good for the kids as the sand is quite shelly but they coped ok (they did sell them at the shop but at $50 AUD each we didn't bother!). Free use of non motorized equipment which was great fun (and once we got to the Sheraton in Denarau we realised a huge bonus as they charge for this type of stuff). Plenty of great food and the beach bar was the perfect place to unwind after an action packed day and enjoy a cocktail and again after going to Denarau afterward the prices were pretty good considering you have no other options (but do recommend you take a few bottles of your own). The kids club was fantastic, a beautiful setting and wonderful charming staff who are actually attentive and engaged with the kids, the activities where varied and they always had lots of fun my 5 and 3 year olds loved it. My only complaint was the price of laundry its ridiculously expensive when you consider that you can have a babysitter for $10 Fijian an hour but will pay a fortune to get some washing done. We put in 2 bags of washing and they wanted to charge us close to $100 Australian dollars plus they ruined one of my kaftans - it all turned out ok they were great and sorted it out but still they could improve on this and also provide a little fold away air dryer for the Bure so you can just rinse things out in the sink. Oh and the size of the coffee cups, my husband and I were dying for a nice decent large coffee each morning but whilst the coffee was nice they only served it in really small cups so we needed to have about 3 to sustain us! Overall though it was superb the whole ambience of the place is just wonderful, we went and stayed at the Sheraton in Denarau (DO NOT BOTHER) afterward and all we wanted to do was turn around and go back to Malolo it was just hideous compared to being on this island paradise. We are already planning when we can go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in Bure 13 and it was great, not so nice from the back but you didn't care as only wan...

We had a recent 3 night stay at this resort and loved it all. After being welcomed by the staff as we came off the boat to settling into our bure we enjoyed every minute. After only a very short while the staff knew our names and looked after us so well. From the breakfast to watching the magnificent sunsets from our room it certainly is paradise. The beds were so comfortable and we slept so well. Would definitely take a shoe to wear into the water as the sand is Shelly and a bit sharp.

Still a great resort, and still the best family resort around.

Some good and some bad things since the upgrade took place (our last stay being two years ago, and before the recent upgrade).

The good. Restaurants are noticeably better, and the food has been cranked up a notch. That said, unless you know that there are two kids menus (the normal kids menu, and the "kids club" menu) you could be forgiven for thinking that there is limited choice for the kids. Ask to see the kids club menu (which requires advance orders) as it doubles your choices.

Same applies at the beach bar. The standard menu gets a bit boring by about day four - but ask about the "bar snacks menu" which isn't on display.

Kids club is wonderful, and you need to "get involved" to appreciate it. Be a dag, and get the kids involved in "Coconut Day" from the outset (9:30) until then close of the day. Timah and Ala are wonderful with the kids. Don't fret if it feels slightly disorganised - those ladies know what they are doing and the kids will have a great time. Best for kids aged 5 to 10.

Activities are what you make of them. Beach activities are great - but you do need to ask them if you want to do something: they will drag out the catamarans and the banana boat ride if you ask, and you can arrange handling fishing if you request it. Prices of some activities (power boat ones) have increased though, and I think Malolo needs to have a rethink on its pricing. The fact that no one uses the jet skis should tell them that they are over priced!

Freddy and the activities team are still great, and crab racing still the highlight. Lack of a lawn-side cava ceremony (which has been replaced by a less personal cava tasting on Saturday evening) is a sad loss, and hopefully in time Malolo will reinstate this.

Bures are all still good, although they have built a new family bure two-thirds the way down the beach which creates an over-crowding situation at that point. Always ask for a bure to the West of the bar, as those behind the beach activities centre are not ideally located. One criticism here (Malolo - if you are listening - the mattresses are too soft: and guests in other bures made the same comment. Not sure what can be done with that).

One major criticism is price, which has increased around 30% since the refurbishment, and the employees will happily tell you it is to recoup the costs of that refit. With this in mind, always opt for the full board package (all meals) as you will regret it (financially) if you don't.

We will be back (for stay number four) when we can afford it. Vinaka Malolo!

Room Tip: Ask for a room to the West of the bar, but not too close (half way along the beach is best).
