We went to Dive Kadavu in July, 2006 - back one wee now- and loved it. Its not a high priced, luxury resort. Its more like joining a family that lives in Fiji. The owners become like family as do many of the other guests. You dive and eat together. The FIJI people at the nearby village are wonderful. We visited their school and met the children - they sing wonderfully. We were invited to a Kava party at the village and liked it as well. We met wonderful people at the resort and will likely go to London and Sidney to visit them.
Diving is very near the resort and there are no significant waves or currents to deal with. My first soft coral and really liked that viewing. Many of the lovely views were shallow, which allowed the snorkeler in the group to enjoy it as well.

The beach where you stay for the break between dives is listed as one of the top 5 beaches in FIJI and its lovely and has no buildings at all - totally natural.

Went on the Manta trip and was amazed. There was essentially no space on that reef system not covered with hard coral.
The high point was diving with 5 large manta rays, some as close as 10 feet away for a time.

The food at the resort was good as was the service. If you are looking for luxury, keep looking. Looking for a nice, clean place with great people at a reasonable price - its there. The views at the beach are great and its right at your front porch.

There was a bit of adjustment to having power in wall plugs only at certain times but found we did not miss it. The bathroom light, overhead fan and bed lights always work, the rest are only on 7-11:30 am and 4-9:30 pm. SInce you are outside then anyway and the rooms have many big windows, it does not matter.

The wife did not dive and still loved it. Children from the village must have seen her shell collecting. Three 5 yr olds came by while she was on the beach and presented here with many truly lovely shells they had found. They gave them to her. Where do you find such generous people on vacation? There was no adult around telling them to do this. They just were kind to a total stranger.

We loved it buts its not for those looking for the country club amenities. Unlike the other review I see, its not like camping at all.

The dive kadavu matana resort website is quite fictional, so here is a more accurate description. For starters, its a dive camp, not a resort, and this was my 7th visit to fiji, so I had many other resorts to compare it with. Firstly, the accommodation is basic 2 star. Because they only generate power for a few hours per day, there are no fridges or tea/coffee facilities in the room. Despite the website showing thatched rooves on the bures, they are actually steel , and it sounds like you are inside a drum when it rains.
You have to eat your meals at set times, and you must eat on a communal table with the other guests. Despite the website suggesting you can romantically dine anywhere on the property, one request by a couple to dine alone to celebrate a birthday was refused by the over bearing owners who joined the guests at every meal and dominated conversation. If there are people diving, breakfast must be started at 7.30 am by everyone, or you'll miss out. ( loud drumming announces each meal session). They only employ one cook, who does not stay any longer than 1 hr at any setting. Lunch is at 1pm and we were reprimanded for being late one day. Breakfast is eggs, with some days offering bacon or muffins or pancakes, plus cereal with powdered milk and fruit. Lunch is no choice, usually a salad, and occasionally fijian cooking based. Dinner is choice of a meat dish or fish. Soup was usually inedible and was the standard entree. Dessert was a home cooked cake. The meals were basic 70's home style cooking, (interpret no flavour) and the cooks aprons were usually filthy. There are no washing machines on the camp, and it shows. We were also given our drinks, everything from coca cola to cocktails, in used tomato paste jars. Apparently they didnt break as much as regular glasses.
The standard of cleaning of the bures was probably the worst aspect of the camp. Bins in the bathroom did not look like they had been cleaned in years and had not been fully emptied from previous guests. Ours was not emptied for at least 4 days. Towels were very old,scratchy and sometimes downright dirty. Pillows were of an equally low standard and looked and felt many years old. The whole resort felt tired, unkempt and lacking regular maintenance.
Given you pay US$150+ per night per person, you would expect a decent standard of accommodation and food. This was not the case. It felt like the owners were approaching retirement and trying to suck as much cash out of it as they could.
Now the diving. The diving is good and varied, but they only have 2 divemasters. One afternoon after lunch ( 1p.m) when the sun came out, we could not organise a dive because they couldnt find a dive master. ( I think he was asleep under a tree somewhere! ) The diving is expensive. Approx US$ 50 / dive, plus they hire every piece of equipment separately. So fins and wetsuit are separate rentals, and the BCD and Regs were also separate rentals. If you plan on diving , bring your own gear or a solid credit card. There is also no guarantee you can dive on the Astrolabe reef, or see the manta rays which they so obviously promote on their website. Those sites are on the windward side of the island and hence only accessible in certain weather conditions. We stayed a week and did not make it to those sites. If you are a non-diver, there is kayaking and some reasonable snorkelling around the local beaches, but not much else. They can take you to nearby beaches for picnics, but charge you FJ$ 30 / head for the service.
Sadly, the camp staff do not have the welcoming,friendly demeanour that is so typical of the fijiian culture and hospitality industry. There are few friendly greetings and no singing or laughing which is the norm on other islands. Perhaps the staff are not well treated by the owners, and it is obvious to guests that there is an uneasy tension there.
To conclude, if you are just going there to dive, don't mind a rigid daily routine and set yourself low standards, you will be fine. If you are looking to combine it with a relaxing holiday and a true fijiian experience, this is not the place. Its poor value for money and not indicative of the wider fijiian holiday experience.
