“A Destination Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

When you think about a hotel named "Grand" you probably envision a 50 story opulent building in an urban downtown location. Not here. This hotel consists of five or six buildings on a well maintained campus right on the water (which means there is walking involved from where you sleep to the pool or to the restaurant or to the lobby). While the feeling is rustic, all of the accommodations are first class. I've stayed here on several occasions while attending conferences, the most recent being last week. The staff are very helpful. The restaurant is very good (the breakfast buffet is one of the best). The rooms are very comfortable. The swimming pool is big and lots of fun for kids. The hotel is about five minutes from Fairhope, which has a downtown full of small shops and equally good restaurants. If you like this sort of "out-of-the-way" hotel experience for a weekend get-away, it's hard to beat this one.

"The Grand", as we affectionately call this resort, is our home away from home. We have stayed there many times over the last 20 years. The entire Grand experience is like a cruise on land. It is so relaxing to stay there. You can do as little or as much as you want. We spend most of our time hanging out at the spectacular pool. But there is golf, tennis, biking, sailing, and more. The grounds are beautiful! All types of plantings. The staff is so accommodating and helpful. Your wish is their command. The spa is so luxurious! The food is delicious but a little pricey. You have to try the marvelous breakfast buffet at least one morning while you are there. Don't miss Bucky's Birdcage Lounge! Live music and dancing every night. We've even been there on a Superbowl Sunday! So much fun! Take your family to The Grand and make some wonderful memories!

I had been wanting to visit the Grand for a long time and finally had the chance...couldn't wait. But, when booking a room, they really couldn't guarantee much in the way of what room type I preferred and the reservationist(s) were not especially friendly or helpful in explaining the "not so guaranteed". So, I overlooked that because I thought it would be nice no matter what room I got. I booked a larger, king room with a bay view. According the photos of the hotel, all the photos show a balcony -- not in our case. We received, doors that opened but went no where. Also, that bay view that was "guaranteed" was a view of the marina which was in a slough. Already disappointed, we decide to freshen up and go to the bar, so -- in the bathroom, we find a roach sitting on the toilet!!! Disgusted, we just killed it and then started to leave. So, we go to put our valuables in the safe -- the safe is locked!!! We cannot open it because we need the code that someone else had put in. We are beyond disappointed in our already short stay. We head down to the bar...stuffy and quiet. We sit outside thinking there would be atmosphere and we are surrounded by a few uptight people that are about 15-20 years our senior. No music playing, no hussle and bussle -- just plain boring. We ended up leaving the hotel to find some activity. Once back to the hotel...there are NO PARKING spaces!!!! Not for us or the other 12 cars that are also looking for a spot to park. We ride around for 25 minutes trying to find a spot with no luck. Finally, a nice worker on a golf cart told us we had to park at the golf course....which was not near our room. He followed us out there and took us back to our room. He was extremely nice and helpful. However, once back in the room, we found that the air that we turned down to 65 degrees (which it won't go lower because they have a governor on it!), had been turned up to 75 degrees. Also, all lights and tv were turned off. It seems there are sensors in the room that turn everything off when you leave. Rediculous! So, twice during the night, the room went back up into the seventies (because when you sleep there is no movement) and I had to get up and turn it back down --- no sleep at all! None... because of it being too hot! And to top it off, they use down comforters for the bedding.....THIS IS THE SOUTH!!!! It's hot here!!!! If you are going to put governors on your air condition controls then you absolutely DO NOT need down comforters. My suggestion is to allow the customer to determine what temperature they like their conditions to be. The rooms were nice and big - that was a plus. We were really hoping for an outstanding stay -- but it was such a let down. It is so traditional and so stodgy that you really have to know that is what you're getting. The grounds are gorgeous mostly because of the trees and water and it is nice if you are looking for nostalgia and a relaxing atmosphere, but if you are looking for contemporary and lively -- this is so not your place. It is full of tradition and "old money" type atmosphere. The older crowd should really love it.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a balcony room.. Also, if you want a true bay view -- ask for gulf/bay view.

Have been to the Grand on personal trips a few times. This time it was a business retreat. Stayed in the Spa Building for the first time. The room was a great size, very quiet, and with a view of the marina. It was on the first floor (same floor as the spa facility). I think I would request the second or third floor on the marina side next time for an even better view. Wireless Internet was great. Used the bikes provided as part of the resort instead of kayaks because a bit too windy for kayaks. It is a beautful and relaxing location. The rooms in the conference center were very nice and the food was outstanding. My husband attended a cooking class with the head chef and other spouses. It was fun. Look forward to another chance to stay there.

We have stayed several times in the last few weeks and enjoyed each time more and more. All the staff that you may encounter are eager to welcome you and to serve you. The grounds are beautiful and great for walking or bike riding. The pool is sparkling. Each dining venue is excellent including Bucky's lounge, the Saltwater Grill, and the Grand Dining Room. There is good music nightly in Bucky's and in the Grand Dining Room. Don't miss the firing of the cannon over the bay each afternoon, the tea and cookies at 4 p.m. and the sunsets over the bay every evening. You can fish from the pier and have your catch prepared in the dining room if you like. We haven't made it to the Spa as yet but we are hearing nothing but good things about it. This is more like visiting someone's nice estate rather than a hotel stay. Relaxation, comfort and wonderful service are the reason we return so often.

Room Tip: Get a room in the Spa building or the Marina building and have parking underneath the building.

We have been vacationing at the Grand Hotel for many, many years. We spent Labor Day (2012) there, but it had been about 18 months since we had stayed there last. As expected, the service is outstanding. Every employee is happy to make your stay special. The pool is outstanding. The bikes are a great way to ride along the bay. I recommend riding your bike along the bay to the Punta Clara Kitchen and purchasing some of its delicious candy. Our room in the Marina house was "tired." It was a nice size, but it is time to update the furnishings. The food at the Saltwater Grill is okay, nothing to rave about. It is a little expensive. Next time we go (and we will continue to go because it is a great place) we may ventute into Fairhope for our meals.

This was my first time to Point Clear and to the Grand Hotel and I absolutely loved it! You feel like you have stepped back in time! It is elegant and stately without being stuffy! The hotel is actually several different buildings spread out through the property. They offer a variety of activities such as bikes, kayaks, Hobie cats, horseshoes, etc. They have an awesome outdoor pool with water slide, an adult only area, a small beach area, children's activities, a marina, etc. They even have an afternoon tea for the guests, complete with crumpets and clotted cream! The spa looks fantastic, even though I did not have a chance to experience any of their services. I loved the location, right on the bay, offering amazing sunsets! I am making plans to return again soon and I can see why so many of the comments referred to repeat guests, it just makes you want to come back again and again!
