This was our first trip to the Orange Beach area and the lodging choices are overwhelming. I had a hard time deciding on a condo, especially at the last minute, so I booked this HGI on the beach. Initially, I worried a bit about not having the extra room that a condo would provide, but have to say that we never missed it.
The four of us shared a room on the 6th (top) floor overlooking the pool and with a side view of the beach and Gulf. We had plenty of room for a rollaway bed too and that worked out wonderfully (for $10/nt). Some nights, we didn't use the rollaway but still found it useful to spread out on. Our room was very quiet on the top floor and the queen beds were comfortable.
Each room had it's own balcony with 2 lawn chairs and a small end table. The balcony was great for drying beach towels and even for watching a storm blow by one night.
The room had a small fridge for some drinks and leftovers from restaurants. We also kept a cooler in the room.
Breakfast is not normally included with the room, but we purchased the bed and breakfast option online and it made for a very reasonable and nice breakfast each morning downstairs ($20 for the 4 of us). A couple of days into the trip we discovered that they also had to-go boxes available and some days we fixed breakfast trays to take back to the room. That was helpful for those mornings when we were slow to get up and about! It was vacation after all. They had a very nice breakfast selection of both made to order items and grab and go items.
All the staff that we encountered at the hotel was friendly and helpful. They happily provided everything we needed - restaurant recommendations (in fact, they have a book full of pictures and menus you can browse through in the lobby), directions, hot cocoa packets, flashlights in the evenings for crab hunting, and towels for the pool (I'd recommend bringing your own beach towels though).
The indoor/outdoor pool (and 2 hot tubs) were large and well kept with lots of lounge chairs and a couple of tables. They even supplied rafts and noodle floats for shared use. There is also a tiki bar adjacent to the outside pool (where I am sure the bartender will ask each and every guest for their ID each and every time they order a drink - he did during our stay).
The boardwalk is just a few steps beyond the bar and the outdoor shower and pools and then you are on the beautiful beach.
There is plenty of room to set up your own chairs, umbrellas, etc and use them, but it was so much nicer to rent a chair for a few days and have the beach service take care of you. The only flaw to that is that they pack up the umbrellas and cushions at 5PM. It would be nice if they had longer hours, at least during the peak season - maybe 7PM. In any case, they are not affiliated with the hotel, so the choice is yours.
This hotel was terrific, very comfortable, clean and relaxing. Most of the other guests were families too. We never regretted staying there instead of at a condo.
We booked online (hilton website) and the rate was approx $200/nt. + $20 for breakfasts.
