My family and I tried this restaurant on the waterfront in Orange Beach, Alabama last night and it was great. There was live music, good food, and fast service. The waterfront was very relaxing and casual, just the way I like it for vacation. Try the black beans and fish. Very good. Great desserts too. I highly recommend the mango darquiri.
We wanted to try some new places on our trip to Orange Beach and we happened upon Calypso Joe's Caribbean Grille. It was great! It was off the main drag of Orange Beach on a marina. There was outdoor seating that faced the water and the big boats. I had the Media Noche which is smoked, chopped pork grilled on a special bread with ham, etc. My husband had the Orange Beach BBQ sandwhich. Both came w/ cole slaw and french fries. They also have seafood dinners and chicken type dinners. You got plenty for your money here and the Caribbean twist to the food was great. There is also an indoor area to eat as well as a covered porch. We will definitely eat here again.
i have had the opportunity of dining at this fine restaurant with the water front dining experience, crab races for the kids the good customer service, great food and live music on weekend. This is definitely a place where i wouldtake my family the next time i am in alabama. Folks they are the kings when it comes to fish in tin and their key lime pie. its a good place to 'jam' as they would say in jamaica! i cant wait till my next visit!
Came a year ago and had a blast and the food was great. Not so anymore. Only had one crab race and that is the main pull for why you would come here with kids. Food was "way" overseasoned and too much for what you got. Not worth the wait and the service was slow.
Bring back the more frequent crab races for the kids and have some decent food.
My family has owned property in Orange Beach for over 40 years, so we know the local restaurants pretty well. We had added Calypso's to our top 10 list, but our visit there mid-June was such a disappointment, we won't be going back!
Problems:
They don't have the chicken salad & gazpacho combo anymore
The burgers, which were great, must now be made with a cheaper grade meat
The Calypso Burger has a new bbq sauce that isn't anywhere as good as the old one.
And on, and on, and on...
The service was fine, but we had to ask the waiter what happened. He candidly told us the restaurant was under new ownership and some changes had been made. Too bad!
For casual atmosphere and good food, try:
LuLu's - Jimmy Buffet's sister owns this one, it's new, and it's good! Try the crab melt sandwich - to die for!
