Locals recommended Docs, so we went and got it to go. We went to the Orange Beach Docs on Canal St. The food was hot, the portions were large and everything tasted good. This place stays busy and we saw a variety of clientele from business attire to tourist casual. We each got the sampler platter and it was more than we could eat. I couldn't say the same thing for some of the other places we ate at.
We had a wonderful meal at Doc's on July 29. The food was very fresh and the service was good. This is a down-home kind of place so don't expect anything fancy. The food is worth it, especially the shrimp salad and the soft shell crabs.
I would not recommend Doc's in Orange Beach to anyone. The shrimp was small and definitely not fresh. All of the food (hushpuppies, stuffed crab, shrimp, etc.) must have been bought frozen at the local grocery store or a restaurant supplier. The service was not good either. I was not pleased with having to pay $80 for this stuff!
The bad news was that there was a tornado warning in our neighborhood, but the good news was that my father and I had Doc's Seafood to distract us. And, oh, what a pleasant distraction. Doc's may not be much to look at (there's even a catch-the-lobster carnival claw game in the bar area), but never have I had better fried shrimp or onion rings. Yum!
The gumbo is always good. The food to my knowledge is always fresh and the service has never been an issue. In and out in no time and the food is great. I never have eaten at the Gulf Shores location but would imagine it would have a lot of tourons (tourist that are morons) eating there. That is just the nature of the beast with Gulf Shores though. If you want a good meal, don't want to get dressed up and need to eat quick, this is THE place.
