“CLOSED - New Name...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2014

under the same ownership with much of the same menu. The owners wanted to highlight that their restaurant was NOT merely a sushi or Asian fusion place. Therefore they changed their name to Gilbey's. They decided to keep a number of their original dishes but added American dishes such as steak & fish. I have a challenge with restaurants that try to be everything to every diner - you end up with a huge offering of average food with nothing of special distinction. Therefore, my three stars & 'Average' rating.

“New Name: Gilbey's”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2014

Zen was one of our favorite restaurants, but we noticed that they never seemed to be very busy. Perhaps that's why they changed from Zen, with an Asian fusion emphasis to Gilbey's, with a seafood and steak theme. The ownership remains the same. They retained a few of our favorites from the old menu, including two of our favorites, chorizo and crawfish wontons and hoisin baby back ribs. $8 lunch specials are a good bargain, considering the quality of the food.
I wish them well. I hope the new name and menu emphasis turn out to be successful.

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Ordered Scallops served in on a bed of Sweet Pea Risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but over salted on the bottom. The risotto was not creamy nor fully cooked and rather bland. We were served pesto in oil. We couldn't enjoy the pesto for the over abundance of olive oil. The sesame crackers served with the pesto was on point. My husband's grit cake was bland but his flank steak was good.

“A Pleasant Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

I always thought the Zen restaurant was a sushi affair, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is a good old American restaurant. We went for lunch with a large group and we had a limited menu of four choices, a burger, trout, Ribs or chicken. Our table had three of the four entrees and all were great. The burger was cooked perfectly and not overdone. The trout was deemed tasty and had no bones. Two of us had the ribs which were tender and the meat fell right off the bones - delicious. Service was attentive and great. Women all received a carnation because it was Valentine's day. I will return. The owner said that they were changing the name to let people know their menu is more eclectic than sushi.

“Food just average; prices a little more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

When dining out on a Friday night, one expects a good crowd and perhaps a wait to be seated. But when we got to Zen on Friday, January 17, 2014, there were only three tables occupied with diners.

Experience tells me that to beware.

Pricy with entrees from $18 to $20, my partner the Fried Rice Stir Fry and found rice was lumpy and meal not flavorable at $20.00. My pan seared Scallops ( 5 in total) were fine but have had better in the Midwest a zillion miles from the Gulf....too many better upscale restaurants in Gulf Shores.Orange Beach.
