Much has been done in recent years to make Court Square and its fountaing more beautiful. The main change was reverting back to a true circle around the round fountan, so there is really no "square" at all. In the cobblestones on the north side (toward Commerce Street) there are two pieces of railroad track that had been paved over and are now visible in the cobblestones. These pieces of track were part of the "Lighting Route, the country's first electric trolley system. Yes, I know Richmond lays claim to that, but it simply is not true. When I quizzed the locals there the claim was changed to say our country's first SUCCESSFUL trolley. That, too, is untrue, because the system in Montgomery operated for more than fifty years.
The square provides an excellent vista of the fountain in the foreground and the state capitol at the far end of Dexter Avenue in the distance.
