Owner description: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., used the pulpit of this unassuming red brick church to lead the 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycott, which ignited the civil rights movement. Steeped in history, this church, where Dr. King served as pastor from 1954 to 1960, was also the site of many civil rights meetings during that era.

“Could Feel the History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Our guide was a very kind, enthusiastic member of the church. She excitedly explained the church's mural, history, and showed us Martin Luther King's offices and the church sanctuary. The guide's passion for the site and the impact the church had on the Civil Rights Movement made this tour a great experience.

“WOW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

The story of the church, and the stories the docent told of Dr King's time there give you such a feeling of awe and appreciation for who the man is, the role this church played in changing history, and how brave the people of Montgomery were during that boycott. A must do in Montgomery.

“Moving historical landmark”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

We stopped by to be here and take a few photos. It was a moving experience being at the church that meant so much during the Civil Rights era. The marker indicating the organization of the Bus Boycott was nice to see, too.

I was impressed by how clean and quiet downtown Montgomery were when we were there one evening. It was a very pleasant place to be.

“Lots of history and culture.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

My friends and I were in town and had sunday free and decided to make our way to the Dexter Avenue church. It ended up being a great experience. The music was wonderful and the crowd was inviting. We had a blast and won't soon forget it. The service was longer than I was used to, but it did not lack for excitement. If you are around Montgomery on a sunday I would go check it out. Lots of history and culture.
