“Historic church”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Famous for its age (nearly 200 years old) and the fact that Jefferson Davis and family were members in 1861, St. John's is a Montgomery landmark. Worth coming to hear the pipe organ on Sunday, too!

“Historic - Civil War - downtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

This church was built in the 1830's, and it was the church home of the President of the Confederacy when Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy. The signal from President Jefferson Davis to start the Civil War was transmitted several blocks away from this church. This church still has a thriving congregation, numbering several hundred. My church had a convention at this church several years ago. This church has many exhibits from its history, and this church is lovingly maintained by a congregation that is proud of its history. However, this church is downtown and it closes at dark; downtown Montgomery becomes questionable after dark.
