We stayed at the Residence Inn Mobile over New Year’s weekend. We checked in on Friday the 30th. While we thought the property itself was very nice, we did have some issues during our stay.
One of the primary reasons we picked this hotel was the indoor pool – we wanted our kids to have a chance to swim during the winter. The pool/spa area was really nice – spacious and lots of very nice furnishings. However, to say the pool was “heated” is using the term loosely. I would say the pool temp was low to mid-70’s at best. It was warmer on Friday than it was on Sunday morning. The spa on the other hand was nice and warm, but two of the three intakes under the water were missing their protective grates. With the whirlpool action going, the suction from these unprotected grates was very dangerous. My wife’s foot was grabbed one time, but she was able to pull it away before she was hurt.
On Saturday, we had our “recharging – please do not disturb” sign on the door until around 10am while we were getting ready. We departed shortly after 10am and returned after 5pm. When we returned, we found that housekeeping had never visited our room. My wife called the front desk, only to be told that all the housekeepers had left for the day. She asked for clean towels and some dishwashing soap, which were delivered shortly after she called. We had planned to cook at the hotel that evening but found that the room only contained three dinner plates, two bowls, and one fork – not enough for our family of four. We called the front desk again and asked for some additional kitchen stuff, which again they were able to provide us. My wife also had to stop by the front desk for additional toilet paper (she was already down near the lobby, so she stopped by instead of calling again).
On Sunday morning (check-out day), my wife called the front desk to ask if we could get a late check-out. Normal check-out was noon, but we wanted to get breakfast and let our kids swim one more time before we departed. My wife was told a late check-out was not possible (which was strange because the hotel was not very busy over the weekend). She explained the issues we had on Saturday, thinking the staff would be accommodating to “make up” for those issues, but the lady at the front desk just hung up on her. No “we’re really sorry ma’am” – she just hung up without another word.
All in all, despite the issues we encountered and the rude front desk staffer, we enjoyed our weekend at the Residence Inn Mobile. We may stay there again in a few months for another winter weekend-getaway. The room was very nice and clean, the breakfast was good (nothing spectacular, but good and a friendly staff), the courtyard with the large gas grill was really nice, and the “heated” pool worked out pretty well for us.
