“This is a nice little place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

This last Sunday was our first visit. We found it quite easily and the parking was good. We took the afternoon dinner menu instead of doing the brunch earlier in the day. The food was definitely different from the average sea food restaurants. There were 4 of us so we had a trial of some different appetizers. Unfortunately, they had run out of the crab cakes which is what we wanted. The large plates did not have a huge serving size which is OK, but for the price I could have enjoyed a bit more to savor later as a too go box. Desert was very good, but then how can you go wrong with chocolate? There was only one key lime pie so two had to share that one. The service was very good by our waitress and she was very helpful and attentive throughout the day. She had a broken collar bone so she deserves a star... We would go back for another visit on a special occasion and perhaps earlier so they would not run out of food. oh yes, we found the Bloody Marys to be the best in the area. We hope they are successful in their business because it is nice to have a different location and a place to have fine dining. We love the linen tablecloths and napkins. A nice touch.

“Great little place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

I've been here about 3 times and have great experiences every time. The food has always been exceptionally mouth watering. Haven't had anything that was bad yet. The servers are very attentive and helpful. Prices are very good for fine dining food. Will definitely be returning. Definitely recommend this place to others.

“Go to Kitchen on George!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We were in Mobile for the Easter weekend. KoG is up the street from my son's house, and we had seen great reviews on TripAdvisor (TA), so we decided to try it on Saturday night. KoG lived up to the TA reviews! Thanks!

We tried several small plates as appetizers, and they were all good. One was their special with crawfish, the calamari and the crab cakes. The special and the crab cakes were the big winners, but the calamari was very good.

For dinner we had the paella, the flank steak and the salmon. All were excellent!

This is a nice, quiet restaurant in a good location. I would recommend you go.

“Great Change of Pace!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Kitchen on George is not a restaurant that you'll pass on your way to some other place and decide to stop. It is a destination! In the historic residential Oakleigh District of Mobile, Kitchen on George is a well restored and nicely appointed restaurant. Nice enough for a quiet dinner for two, but comfortable enough for a larger group (we had four), it feels like a nice night out without over-the-top pricing -- especially since you have the option of ordering either from their small plates or large plate entrees. Members of our party enjoyed the shrimp and grits, Alabama goat cheese salad, crab cakes, and spinach saute. All were delicious!!!

I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. It is worth the trip off the beaten path.

“Beautiful setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

We have lived here a year and had yet to try KoG. The interior is beautifully done, upscale and clearly a major investment, which is probably due to the fact that a major corporation is the backer. One detail that is a little off is the lack of space for diners waiting. We arrived on time for our reservation and still had to wait. There are only two small benches right at the host podium. When things are backed up, this is not sufficient.

The hostess for the evening was friendly enough, but seemed to be somewhat confused. Also, the restaurant may want to consider establishing a better dress code for front of house duty.

We started with cocktails at the bar, which took longer to obtain than necessary due to the disappearance of the sole bartender for a period of time. When she returned, she did prepare quite competent drinks.

The menu offerings were limited in choice but there is something here for everyone as long as one appreciates modern cuisine and does not come in expecting the typical Mobilian southern fried anything.

It was odd that we had to share a single dinner menu, as we were given one dinner menu and one brunch menu (at 9 pm on Saturday night). The waiter did not explain the menu offerings nor happen to mention that there were specials. We only found that out when the table next to us were waited on. Chalk that up to staff in training. There will be lapses. The price point makes up for that to some extent.

A starter of bread with dipping oil was provided. Their oil mixture is outstanding. Very fresh and herbal in taste and aroma. Made me wish I could eat more than a morsel of bread.

Goat cheese and arugula salad was delightful as a starter. My entree was the flank steak. As others have said, it is very good but has some flaws that prevent it from getting all five points. The sauce has a tendency to overpower the steak.

My partner was very pleased with the scallops, and was over the moon with the creme brulee for dessert.

The wine order was kind of strange in that a separate server appeared and performed the opening and tasting, then the first pour. But he took the bottle away to where I don't know. The waiter noticed it was missing and had to ask the (wine steward?) to bring it back, which he did and then apologized for taking it away. Again, chalk it up to staff in training.

Considering that this is a training restaurant, I'd say they do quite well. We will definitely go back.
