Sonny's is surrounded by every fast food franchise you can think of and the space that isn't filed by fast food is filled by family restaurants and eateries. It is kind of an island of regional food in a sea of"fast is better than good". I stopped in for lunch on the way to the airport. The facility is geared to big crowds, in that semi-industrial style common to many restaurants that started small and grew and grew.
The wait staff was very friendly and welcoming. After being seated, they gave me 3 menus to figure out. A large main menu, a lunch menu and a specials menu. And the waitress added several daily specials. I Settled on sliced brisket, baked beans, Cole Slaw and corn bread (with or without butter). Who the heck eats corn bread without butter?????
The food came in about 5 minutes. The beans were great, the brisket OK and the coleslaw disappointingly flavorless. And the corn bread with butter was nice...good texture and taste, moist without being crumbly. All in all,an OK meal. infinitely better than fast food.
The check was for $9; $6 for the meal and $3 for a glass of sweet tea. Who the heck charges $3 for a glass of sweet tea????
Sonny's was OK but next time I will drive the extra 5 minutes south on Schilinger Rd to Orleans Po Boys.
