“You get what you pay for.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

I spent one night in Semabok Inn on 18th Dec 2011. I ended up in Semabok Inn because all the established hotels were fully booked out. Prior to this, I've never even heard of Semabok Inn.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is reasonably close to both the Town Center and Ayer Keroh (5-10 minutes by car either ways, depending on traffic).

The front desk staff I encountered were both fluently multilingual and polite, and the building looks recently renovated.

The rooms were larger than what I had expected (I've stayed in smaller rooms in dingier hotels at higher prices), and was sufficient for a couple and a baby. The room itself was clean and newly renovated, but it had some remnants of its former self, with cupboards and dresser tables obviously left over from before. One thing that hit me was a damp smell that lingered in the room.

The toilet appeared clean until you step in it - it was a little grimy (one of my biggest peeves). Other than that, the water pressure was good, and we had uninterrupted hot water. The damp smell seemed to have come from the toilet. The rug placed in front of the toilet was soaked and grimy (another big peeve!). Soap and Shampoo were provided, along with clean new towels.

The bed wasn't great - it's a fairly cheap sort of spring bed, but it's new.

My room had two plug points.

The Good: Booking, reception and checking out was easy, fast and friendly. The room was clean and fairly comfortable. The hotel was cheap, even during peak seasons. We last stayed in Malacca in a dormitory and collectively it came to about the same price. The air conditioner worked great.

The Bad: The toilet floor and rug were grimy, and it gave off a damp odor. The walls were very thin. You can't hear another room's conversations, but you can hear the television and doors slamming quite often. Doesn't come with breakfast, but hey, if you're in Malacca, you should be eating out, not in the hotel :)

Verdict: Hey, it was among the cheapest accommodations in Malacca. I'd probably look for better hotels in the future, but if better hotels are unavailable (as was this case), I'd have no reservations coming back. It's better than most similarly priced accommodations I've been in, and keeping in mind that you get what you pay for, I'd give this place a 3 out of 5. It neither exceeded nor fell short of my expectations.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with windows if possible. I aired my room for a few minutes and the damp odor became...

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2011

Stayed at the hotel for a period of 3 days 2 nights. Hotel location is reasonably close to the town centre, approx 5-10mins drive depending on traffic. For the hotel itself, looks promising from the outside with the neon lights and signboard but the room itself is in a true sorry state, even after claims that they have actually revamped the rooms and upgraded it. There was just no 'hotel room' feel in the room, with a miserable 21" unbranded tv with a problematic remote (can only change channels upwards and not downwards). Bathroom was dirty and the beds had a terrible smell.

Totally suprise that they claimed to have won some award a few years back as the best 2 Star Hotel in Malacca. Staff was slow in getting work done and there was a chinese lady (whom I believe is a staff there too) who is ultra grumpy.

Even parking was payable (to the local city council) although that business area wasn't particularly busy.

In short, would certainly not go back there unless there are no other better hotels in Malacca, which I strongly doubt!

I've went to melaka on 2 nov 2010 and I stayed at here for 2 nights. I chose a queen bed room. The bathroom was nice and the hot water shower is definitely my saviour after a long day.

In melaka you have you to get your own transport unless you are staying in town, where the hotels are most expensive and not advisable for low budgets. If you have your own car, you can drive to bukit katil from semabok inn within ten minutes. For supper, there's a mamak restaurant opened until 3am at 5 minutes car driving distance from here.

The price is fair for a 2 star hotel and i recommend for family trips. Teenage groups with low budget can stay here too if they can get their own transport. Walking is a no, you will just wear yourself out.
