“A home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

We stayed at the Guli Residence for 3 nights in early April and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location was excellent with an easy stroll to Jonker Street or to the lovely Riverside and we also walked to the shopping malls in the centre of town quite comfortably.

The room was spacious, clean and the bed comfortable, all you really need when you are travelling and spending so much of your time exploring your destination. As mentioned many times on Trip Advisor, the highlight of the accommodation is the family who run the Guli Residence. Mr Lai and his delightful teenage daughter Jen and son James offer an insight into Melaka life and their Chinese heritage that you would not experience in a 5 star hotel. We enjoyed a generous night time tour of Melaka with Mr Lai, along with his wonderful coffee making skills, and we also enjoyed a Chinese Tea Ceremony with Jen which basically involved Jen making us tea from a traditional Chinese tea setting including a clay pot, and chatting to us about various things within their heritage. James gave us a lift to the bus station on our departure and we chatted to him about his future studies in the Hospitality industry - we have no doubt he will do very well as he is already ahead of the bunch in terms of having helped run a guest house for a number of years.

Our three days in Melaka involved wandering the streets and the riverside, we ate at places such as the Geographer Cafe (very good), Nancy's Kitchen (excellent), Calanthe Art Cafe (13 States Coffee House) which was great, The Riverside Hotel and Bar (good), Hard Rock Cafe (only drank here but the food also looked good - expensive though), Bistro 1673 (meals OK and entertainment and ambiance very good). The night time river cruise was pleasant, particularly with a light breeze giving respite from the warm day and evening, the 'disco rickshaw ride' is a must and the markets were great for people wanting to sample various culinary delights.

Melaka is a must visit if you are coming to Malaysia and we feel that the very best way to see it is by staying in a guest house such as the Guli Residence.

I planned to stay just a night but ended up 3 nights. The sincerity and generousity of the family made the difference in my decision. Of course, the strategic location helped too! I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Melaka and having Mr Lai and family share their time with me was such a rare blessing and unforgettable. Thank you!

Located within minutes from Jonker Walk & the river cruise, it's easy to get to Malacca's main attractions from this place. The room is quite spacious and clean with basic amenities as expected. Personally, I felt that the rates is just slightly expensive as compared to other similar lodgings.

As we were here for only a night, we didn't get to sample any food or drinks provided. However, James, the son of the owner Mr. Lai, was really friendly. The owner was nice enough to let his son to drive us to the bus station on our departure date. Overall, it was pleasant, albeit short stay.

We stayed here two nights just after Chinese New Year. We are not young and it is not our usual sort of hotel but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is very centrally positioned for sightseeing and restaurants The rooms were large and clean. The aircon and fans worked when needed. More than anything it is the atmosphere of the place and the hospitality extended by the family that make it special. One of our group was not well and Mr Lai even bought medecine for him. He took us out on his tour and generously bought food for us. We didn't know such personal, friendly service still happened in hotels.

We stayed at Guli residence just the one night but wished we could have stayed longer, the hosts are such a friendly and beautiful family and make you feel very comfortable being there. We were asked to join in their daughters birthday celebrations which was a very kind gesture.

The accommodation (Standard King room) is very spacious, clean and really quiet, given the traffic of the nearby Jonker street. Best night sleep we'd had all trip. You are only 2 small blocks away from main centre of town and all attractions are in close walking distance. It is such a great location.

Super location, lovely knowledgeable hosts and affordable rates, all you could ask for in accommodation. We will definitely stay here again if we are back to Melacca.

P.S. We are very sorry that we accidently forgot to return the keys, I hope you received them in the post.

Room Tip: Room 2 was at the back of the building and was very quiet.

We stayed for three nights in the standard room. It's a large room, simply furnished, but with a very confortable bed, en suite shower room and excellent airconditioning. The guesthouse is very well located in a quiet street in the historical centre with lots of interesting places to visit on foot.
What made our stay exceptional was the hospitality of our host, Mr Lea, and his family, as already described by many previous reviewers. Thank you so much.

Great host and location. Children think Uncle Lai is awesome who brought us sight seeing out of town centre. Special thanks for bringing us to St Peter's Church on the last day of our stay.
The family is really friendly. We felt at home staying there.
