“An old charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

What a lovely little boutique hotel. You may get a little oh oh when you first see the front of the building but when the lobby doors open, a lovely charming hotel. The reception, the dining room and the bar are at the old mansion. The front office staff were always smiling and helpful. The rooms are in the new wing behind and very pretty. We were so happy when we first stepped into our room we just smiled. From black and white bathroom tiles to lion claws holding up the bath, was inviting. Everything was wonderful and with modern facilities in the room. The dining room was lovely, very pretty with nice linen like in the grand old houses of old Malacca. The chef made us a special peranakan dinner because I wanted something local. Now that was what I call service. They have a little bit of nostalgia all over the lobby. Nuts, biscuits and preserved assortments, things that kids grew up snacking during the 50s & 60s presumably.

A bit of a walk to Jonker Street and to the Hardrock cafe. Not far to walk to take a cruise by the river. No shopping malls near this place, you have to take a taxi. So if you like being near the mall, this is not the place for you. Also this is not a place for little children. This is a place if you appreciate the quiet old peranakan charm.

Service was top rate. They were all so nice, always had a smile. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

The very good
Impeccably maintained rooms. Very clean. Charming "old colonial" look. Excellent bed, bath & shower. Everything works. Fast check-in. Exactly what you expect from a YTL hotel.
The "not" so good
The colonial building is getting lost between existing high rises. A gigantic ugly high rise is being build in front of the hotel. Not the hotel's fault but still ugly and disturbing.
The "very bad"
The breakfast is unbelievably bad. We arrived around 10am. Only a few leftovers on what they called semi buffet. Dirty, flies all over. Tea from the "jar". Cappuccino took 15 minutes to prepare and was tasteless. The " a la carte" Nasi Lemak was served cold, the so called fresh murtabak looked and tasted like it was two days old and was heated up, dripping in the oil. Food on the street and in food courts is of much better quality. The food quality offered was a disgrace, nothing else. We got up, asked the reception to deduct the breakfast from the bill (they promptly did) and left.

We knew it was going to be a good stay when we opened the doors to the lobby. We arrived tired and rumpled from a long day of travelling, and the lobby greeted us like an old friend. The front staff were welcoming and asked us to just go sit down until they performed the check-in in routine. There are very cosy sitting rooms of the lobby with divans and comfy chairs and books and cookies in a huge glass jar. The walk to the rooms is pleasant and immerses you into the whole colonial feel of the hotel. The rooms themselves are wonderfully appointed and the bathroom space with the clawfoot tub, large shower, and real marble and dark wood would not be out of place in a Park Avenue Penthouse. This is a seriously well thought out and executed space and we felt instantly at home. We ate dinner in the restaurant, and everything they brought was excellent. We had smoked duck and a wonderful steak and the chees plate for afters was huge and lavish and we ate every crumb. The live piano in the background is a nice touch. Overall, a wonderful stay and a place I would recommend unreservedly.

Room Tip: Stay on the lower floors, the upper floors are new and don't have the same colonial feel

Beautiful hotel where you can really feel the spirit of colonial Malacca. Excellent service, from a very nice welcome with tea and cold towels to good advice as to restaurants and getting around. Everyone was extra helpful and nice.
Food is good too. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on two nights and enjoyed both the food and the live piano music.
Rooms are very beautiful but can be a bit noisy. I would advise to come on weekdays as there are less people and the place feels more calm and peaceful.
Spa is excellent as well, we’ve tried both cooling treatment (with egg massage) and worming treatment with hot rice begs and both were really enjoyable.
We will be back for sure!

Just spent three nights on the 9th floor, fantastic room, bed and views. The food and service was first class along with the small but well equipped gym. we didn't use the pool it looked fine, not really a place were you would bring the kids anyway but a great growen up's size pool.

The spa according to my wife "best of the best" and is perfectly walk able to most areas of the city, Jonker st is a very easy walk.

The little jars of treats scatted around is a great touch as well the small biscuits in the library i think were everyone's favorites.

I must say though there were two short comings one being the toilet with no real "protection" from others in the room and the complete lack of sound proofing (although they can go hand in hand) not only could we hear everything and i mean everything! to give you an idea you can hear not only the person in the room on the phone but also the person they were talking to. On the Saturday night loud music from the street meant not a lot of sleep was had before 1.00am, not sure if that's typical or not though.

Would stay again

This hotel has a definite colonial feel. What with afternoon tea and the library it really makes the most of its historical background. The main building is a refurbished plantation house, which has been tastefully done. The rooms behind the planation house are quite luxurious with their 4 poster beds and claw foot bath with marbled floors. The bed is extremely comfortable. I like the nice touches where turn down service includes a light snack. The pool although quite small in length is a welcome relief after a hot day of sightseeing. Although I had read reports about the area getting crowded, I never experienced that problem. The staff were welcoming and helpful. If there was something negative to report it is possibly the location. If your main idea is to spend time in the UNESCO town it is a little walk, perhaps 15- 20 minutes which can actually feel a lot longer in the afternoon heat. This could be overcome by taxis which are reasonably priced. There are some eateries around the hotel, but not that many. The breakfast at the hotel was delicious. Malacca is an interesting historical town to visit and if you would like the feel of a plantation experience then stay at The Majestic.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 7th floor and the views were great.
