“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2009

I went to stay in Equatorial on the 30th May. The reception was fast and efficient. I was greet with a smile the minute I stopped my car in front of the lobby. Luggage was carried to my room and the next day, back into my car again. The service was excellent. A 5 stars indeed. The pool was great , big and clean. Not crowded even on weekends. The room was a bit outdated in design and relatively quite small but it was clean and everything functioning.Walking to Jonker street can be quite far but u can easily hire a trishaw in front of the hotel. Basically everything meets my expectation especially the concierge and bellman service was indeed good. The location of the hotel is near to historical places. It will be better if the hotel can provide free shuttle service to this places as well. Overall I enjoyed the stay minus the traffic noice aorund the hotel in the morning which can be quite obvious at times.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2009

I just returned from a weekend trip to Melaka as a friend won a 2-night stay at this hotel. The location is pretty convenient, opposite the new Pahlawan Mall if you're in need of some shopping, basic amenities and air conditioning when you've roasted a little too much outside. A'Famosa is an easy 5 min stroll away (amidst some traffic, there aren't that many sidewalks in Melaka, so walking on the side of the road itself is a norm), and about a 10-15 minute stroll to the fun Jonker area.

We drove to Melaka from KL, and there was more than enough parking which was also free for hotel guests. The staff were courteous and pleasant right from the start. They even let us check-in more than 2 hours early, and the concierge wanted to help us carry our bags to our car in the basement upon checkout, but we only had a few items on us. We were given free bottles of mineral water, and an extra set of toiletries since we had asked for an extra bed as well (these were topped up whenever they were used or finished).

Food-wise, the hotel has a few dining outlets to choose from, including Kampachi, which serves one of the best Japanese cuisines in Malaysia (at Equatorial's Kuala Lumpur hotel and the Pavilion mall, didn't try it here). I also had breakfast at the coffee house, and the buffet selection was pretty decent, with local fare, and your regular cereal-eggs-fruits-breads selection. I must say though that the eggs station also had half-boiled and poached eggs, and I've never seen any other hotel include half-boiled or poached eggs for the buffet breakfast - so this is a definite plus!

The room itself is of a decent size and comfortable - we had 3 single beds in there with enough room to spare. Mind you, the Equatorial is more 'classic' than 'contemporary' in style, and personally, I don't really think it's in any need of a serious refurbishment. At most, they could probably update the TV to a plasma, and have plants growing in their planter boxes outside the window, but both aren't really major issues. After all, all the Hotel Equatorials I've seen have that 'dated' feel, so perhaps that's just their style?? The important thing was that the room was clean, the beds comfortable, and the room certainly wasn't a dud. There were a few minor to note though, the safe and cupboard squeaked a little when opening, and the shower tap's hot water starts midway through the cold setting! It's not a big deal once you figure it out though, although there is a smaller margin for error when attempting to get the water at just the right temperature for "warm".

Overall, I wouldn't mind staying here again. The location is good and quality is decent. If I had the money to splurge, I would check out Hotel Majestic for a more "authentic" Melaka experience (the walk to Jonker and the other interesting sights are quite a bit further though), but there are several other interesting (mostly budget-oriented) accommodations in the Jonker area as well if you're looking to experience this interesting little historical city.

We stayed here one night of a Jalan Jalan 4 day tour from Singapore into Malaysia. The old style TV had a reasonable range. Air-conditioning was noisy. Good service and friendly staff. The food selection and quality in buffet lunch and breakfast was very good. Hotel is located opposite shopping centre that had a range of places to eat. Jonker street is an easy walk. We would not stay here again but think that it is OK as a 1 night if you have to! Do not understand why hotels try to charge for extra tea and coffee. For the few cents they get it is not worth creating a negative feeling especially when the hotel is aging.

As title says Location is super, within a stones through from the Aformosa, 10- 15 mins to the Jonker street and the other attractions.

Club Room is of the 1990's design and though large was in need of a full refurb. They electronic key was fustrating to use. .... Pool again was ok, pool bar was closed.... again lack of TLC and attention to service.

Breakfast at 9am was a mad crush, staff looked stressed,, the breakfast egg chef esp... think that the Easter holidays meant that the hotel was full. went early at 7.30am next day to avoid the chaos. much better that time.

The King of Malaysia was staying in the hotel at the same time, which says it all about the impression of the hotel on the VIPS of Malaysia, but please spend some money to refurb it!!

The location of this hotel was perfect. Hotel is a short walking distance from most of key attractions of Melaka. There is also a large shopping mall located right across the street from the hotel. Lobby of the hotel looked nice and the staff was very friendly.

The room it self wasn't impressive at all. It looked as if it hasn't been repaired since the 80s. TV in the room was a 17" tube TV that I could barely see from my bed. The electronic control console next to the bed had one of the buttons ripped off and the controls for the TV weren't working. Walls in the room looks like they've been patched up on the cheap.

The windows of my room overlooked the Sultans Palace/Garden. Down side of this is that there is a big school located right outside which gets very noisy during the day. Overall the room looked like a 3-star hotel at best.

I may have been a bit harsh on the hotel, but only because it was sub-par for a 5-star. Overall the hotel was a good value and I may consider staying here again. One of the tour guides told me the king of Malaysia will be staying in this hotel the day after I checked out, go figure.

This hotel is conveniently located next to a shopping centre and only a walking distance away from Fort A Formosa. Staff were friendly and helpful, rooms were clean. Great view from the balcony. Walking distance to the shops for food. No shortage of taxis outside the building meant that there was no problem getting around.

Well, perhaps they are far from being 5 star hotel, as they say, but it was good place to stay, first of all because of convinient location. In a walking distance from most historical parts of Malacca and in some 5-7 minutes by taxi from Portugise settlement. Staff is very kind and helpful, but rooms are quite small, with a cute balcony. Swimming pool was nice, just I found water is a bit cold... Overall, it's good!
