“Amazing staff makes this hotel a 5-star!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2011 via mobile

Did a 4D3N camp at this amazing hotel and left feeling the warmth and helpfulness of the staff. Indeed the staff are so well trained and honest. Some of my friends lost things ranging from sunglasses, a jacket, earring and iphone. Everything was found by the staff in the end. The personal touch given was just so wonderful.

The king sized beds was so comfortable, i miss them already!

Food was first class. The loaves of bread at the hotel's bakery is a must try! They are made fresh each day.

Thanks to Vincent and team, our camp was a success!

This is a big hotel which is relatively modern. The hotel is just outside the main centre, but is within walking distance of the centre, although not so good in the heat!

The hotel rooms are well-sized and relatively up to date, if unexceptional.

The hotel has a good swimming pool at its podium level. There are restaurants within the hotel, and there are fast food places and a 7 eleven just outside the front door.

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for rooms with a sea view.

Hotel Equtorial's location is in the main town and is close to the new big malls and to the water
The historical church is close and so is shopping places
Melaka is primarily one way for driving so you may not want to take a taxi but walk
You can shop at the nearby malls and there are some street shops also.
There are cycle rikshaws beautifully decorated by the church for tourists.
Also there is a pillar which has a circular ride from where you can see the whole melaka town...ideal time for this ride is around 7ish when the lights have just turned on but its nt too dark

This hotel is located in a convenient spot close to a large shopping center and lots of restaurants nearby. Getting to the historical sights within the Melaka old city (e.g. Farmosa fort, St Paul's Church, Dutch buildings and Jonkers Street) is also close by and approximately 5 to 10 minutes drive. Therefore, in terms of location and convenience, this hotel is good. Internet is available although not free and there is a swimming pool and gym in the hotel.

However, over the years, it appears that the management has not maintained the building or renewed the rooms very much. The rooms are a little tired and old and not up to a 5 star standard that you would normally get in most hotels in Malaysia. I would rate the rooms a 4 star standard compared to other 5 star hotels in Malaysia.

One other thing which the management should also take note of is that the close proximity of the hotel to the public shopping centers mean that security needs to be available as people could easily pop by the hotel. My mother brought some of the young children up to sleep and they were followed by a man into the hotel lift who looked suspicious. Upon reaching our floor, my mother sensed something was not right and quickly ushered the children towards the room. When she turned around, she saw the man unzip his pants and flashed himself !! There was no security personnel in sight at the lobby to monitor people walking in and out of the hotel and when my father reported this incident at the front desk, they did not do very much or check on us at all or even said anything when we checked out the next day.

I stayed at the Equatorial Melaka for two nights on my way to Singapore from KL. After the dive I stayed in in Kuala Lumpur, all I can say is "wow!". I have stayed at Hiltons, Raddisons and Sofitels but the Equatorial puts them all to shame. The room did not fail to impress with a comfortable king size bed, two seat couch and a private Balcony overlooking that fantastic pool, the ruins of the fort and the old Sultans Palace. The bathroom was class leading, and the room was immaculately presented. Even the Television had it's own cabinet where it could be hidden away. I found the staff to be possibly the most helpful in any hotel I have ever stayed in, and the location was perfect, across the road from a shopping mall which is open until 11pm each night, and about 200 metres from all the cultural landmarks of Melaka. It's also great because all the taxi driver's know it so well. The swimming pool is also very beautiful and certainly a treat to jump into after a day of exploring this fascinating tropical town. The only minor inconvenience was that the business centre was on a high floor and the few times I went there was completely occupied by other guests. If you like to sleep in you may also be awoken by the brass band at the school next door, but I actually found it to be a nice alarm clock, and besides the rooms are quite soundproof so i'm just nitpicking. Whatever you do, don't miss the Mee Rebus from the hotel restaurant, the most outstanding dish from my entire trip, possibly even the best meal I have ever had!

Room Tip: This hotel is often a secret deal on websites.

I have stayed in this hotel with my partner for one night and we were very satisfied with the location, room size and facilities. The hotel is walking distance to the historical sites and there is a big mall next to the hotel. The check-in time was 2pm but we have arrived at 1pm and they allow us to check-in. We were given a newly renovated room with seaview. The room was roomy and modern. However, there is a paint stench in the room due to renovation. Another downside is that the TV reception for most of the channels are not good. All I can see are snowflakes on the TV. I have patronized the Peranakan restaurant in the hotel and the decorations, furnitures in the restaurant is very Peranakan and we liked the design very much. The size of the dishes in the menu are either medium or large size and the waitress said that since there are only the both of us, they will customize the dishes which cater for 2 person. That's thoughtful of them. This is my first time been to Malacca and I will stay in this hotel again if I ever visit Malacca again.

Recommendation: Jonker Walk, Chicken rice ball and Peranakan food.

I booked this as part of my F&E tour package, and it turned out to be much better than I thought. The location is ideal compared to other hotels. We were on the deluxe room at the 12th floor and the view was spectacular, especially at sunset. I'm not sure if my room has been renovated (probably not yet), but it was spacious, with comfortable beds and more importantly clean. Unlike the previous reviews, I was notified of the renovation going on a few floors below from 9 - 5pm but we weren't affected. We were in the room some time during the period but did not hear anything (quite fortunately). Breakfast provided had a good variety and service was very friendly. The only downside is there isn't any free Wi-fi provided, but for compensation, they have cable TV :) It's also within walking distance to A'Famosa and other attractions and a short walk away to Jonker Street for good food - remember to try the Chendol and Nyonya pineapple tarts. I will definitely stay here again.
