“Leaving Renaissance management soon, but positives remain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Reading some of the other reviews on this site I was concerned when 100% occupancy at a rival property led me to book into the Renaissance. I needn't have worried - the property may not be a top notch five star, but my experience was generally positive for the money paid (total RM450++ including club access and breakfast). The staff are very attentive, the club floor lounge is spacious and uncrowded, and the pool / gym facilities are large and well maintained. There are yoga and stretch classes in the studio and a lot of free weights.

I had a delicious Italian meal at Olio restaurant, the wifi worked and the public spaces were clean and tidy. The "wine buffet" at Olio is basically an RM 65++ drink as much as you want promotion for diners at the restaurant. I found this was excellent value and there was a good selection of reds and whites. The calamari was crispy and tasty, and the chicken piccatta absolutely lip smacking delicious, with a perfectly executed side dish of risotto.

Breakfast at the club was acceptable with good cappuccino and tender papaya. The New Straits Times was delivered to the room, the flat screen tv was impressively large and the shower worked. No complaints. In fact the bed was incredibly comfortable and I slept very well.

A loyal Marriott customer for 25 years and this is by far the shabbiest of the chain. It has potential and the ground floor rooms are in good shape. But go up to the room floors and it is apparent that this old dame is ready for a remake. And I think that is in the cards as you may have trouble booking for next year. It needs a cleanup, desparately.

Room Tip: Higher floors to get a better view and be away from traffic noise. The hotel is close the main rout...

My family like to come to Malacca (from Singapore) for mini-breaks (sometimes stretching up to 4-5 days as we like seek out the many Malaccan food places) and we have been staying at this Renaissance hotel for the past 17 years. We like this hotel because of the friendly staff, the huge pool, and most importantly the nice and spacious rooms; the rooms with connecting doors became important in recent years when our two kids came along. However, in the last two years we notice that the hotel is becoming tired: furniture old and scuffed, sofa cover frayed, bathroom fittings not functioning as they are supposed to, bathtubs stained, housekeeping tardy and rooms not ready by official checkin time, key card system not working well (we needed to change our key card three times during our current stay), just to mention a few. Of course the staff are still very friendly, and the signature Marriot beds still very comfortable. We will continue to stay in this hotel if the management shows that it is making an effort to renew the facilities. Otherwise we might seriously need to start looking elsewhere for our next stay.

Back in the late 80s and 90s, this was the best hotel in town. Unfortunately, it is now way past its prime and crying out for refurbishment. The room we had was right at the end of the corridor and very spacious. The bathroom was big as the dining area in my condo. But there was not a single picture on the wall, no touch that would have added some charm. The exhaust fan in the my room toilet seems to be non-existent, so toilet smells lingered in the room.

The carpet and furniture, though well-maintained, were relics from the hotel's heyday. However, with the exception of bathrobes, everything you would normally expect to get in a good hotel room was there. Plenty of down pillows and a plush duvet make the bed the best place to be in the room.

The swimming pool is roughly on the North-west side of the hotel, meaning that until around 11 there is little sunlight at the pool and it the water is quite cold, although the loungers are arranged in such a way that they get the sun before the water does--not an ideal location!

The hotel is known for its buffet, and I would say that there is a varied choice of food. I wouldn't say the food is great but certainly better than many. Coffee drinkers take note: the coffee that comes with the breakfast is awful; order cappuccino or other freshly-brewed coffee (they have Illy coffee) from the drinks bar at an extra charge instead. Tea drinkers: the teh tarik from the juice bar is far superior to the lukewarm stuff the waiters serve at the table.

There are often large groups at the hotel for seminars and also tour groups. When that happens, the workload is noticeably heavy for the waiters to deal with; they have trouble keeping up with clearing tables, replenishing cutlery and the like. It appears that there are many young and probably less-experienced waiting staff who still need a fair bit of training and who still need to learn to anticipate the needs of guests. Furthermore, the younger staff do not interact as willingly with guests, which could be due to a language barrier.

Having said that, the staff are generally lovely. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Even the gift shop is one of the better ones I have seen in Malaysia where souvenirs are concerned.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are spacious; rooms with river views have a beautiful night view.

Generally speaking our favorite family hotel in Malacca, despite what appears to be a lack of investment and upgrading in recent years. Other hotels have better food (try the Majestic new door or the Casa del Rio on the river), but the combination of a three room suite on the Club floor that allows some space between us and the two thugs (ages 8 and 5), a very nice pool area, a decent Club lounge and friendly staff still gives it the edge. The room service menu has actually got slightly worse (they did do one of the best chicken rice you could get in a hotel in Malaysia: and dumped it from the menu). And poor room designs mean a lack of power points for your phones, laptops and other gizmos. We we advised the hotel is revering back to the Ramada brand from 1 January 2013. I like the staff there and was glad to hear most of the people will be staying on. Just hope the new management spends some money on raising the standard of the rooms.

Room Tip: Book early if you plan to stay during the school holiday periods, when it can get busy with visitors...

My family and I have stayed in this hotel many times over the last 20 years.
The hotel has been under different ownerships over that period.
My last stay was only a couple of weeks ago and from what I have heard from the staff is that the hotel (currently under the Marriot group) is in the process of changing ownership again.

The reason for staying at this hotel is mainly due to the fact that they have some very friendly and helpful staff and this was no different from my most recent stay. However what was very noticeable during this stay was that the hotel wasn’t quite up to the standard that I have previously experienced.

We booked 5 rooms on this visit and we were all bitten by either dust mites or beg bugs in our rooms. There were balls of dusk under the beds and some bits of litter.

The bathrooms were old and poorly maintained with dripping pipes. The carpets are dated and the hotel seems to have lost its charm. I too am surprise that the Marriot group has let this hotel sink to this level. I hope the new management will rectify these problems and restore it to its former standards.

The public spaces are fine and the beds very comfortable but the bathroom was a disgrace for what purports to be a5* hotel. Peeling wallpaper and stained bath and sink. There are better in hostels. The room was large and on 21st floor but windows grubby.breakfast extensive choices and it was cheap - get what you pay for!
