“Value for money hotel which suffers because of its popularity.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

We gave this hotel a go as we frequent Melaka a fair bit and wanted to see what options there were from our usual haunts. TLDR version, apart from some minor quibbles, it's pretty much a good bang for your buck.

The good.
Location is fantastic. Situated right next to Mahkota Parade and opposite from Dataran Pahlawan (DP) and with a mall of the same name sharing the same space one would be spoiled for choice when it comes to dining and entertainment options. Lots of restaurants scattered throughout the different malls, a cineplex and an indoor playground at DP are a couple of options to keep the kids happy.

The room itself was great, 2 TVs in a room, that was a first for us, allowed the adults to unwind in front of the TV when the kids were asleep for the night. The room was partitioned with a glass wall between the bed and door. This was not a bad idea as it muffled the noise coming from the hallway, of which there was a fair bit, especially during check-in/out times. The room was generally very clean and everything worked as it should.

The bad. (drivers take note)
This hotel was pretty annoying from a driver's point of view. There was no proper drop off area in front of the hotel lobby as it was cordoned off which resulted in us having to unload our luggage by the road and wheeling it into the hotel lobby. As it was our first visit, we didn't know that the mall and the hotel shared the same lift lobby and that it would have been easier to drive up into the mall's carpark and unload our stuff there before wheeling it to the lobby via the carpark lift.

It was also annoying having to change lifts every time we wanted to get from our room to the car and vice versa but that was to be expected if you wanted some semblance of security. Still, if you're the type to want to drive around Melaka in search of food or shopping while you're staying in Hatten, be prepared to do a spot of waiting at the lift lobbies during your stay.

The ugly.
As a relatively large hotel that was new, we were expecting the buffet breakfast to be a little like rush hour and it wasn't far from our expectations. Expect long queues to get into breakfast and food ranging from alright to downright inedible. We gave breakfast a shot as it was our first go around but we'll probably skip it even if it's included in the price the next time round, there's plenty of food around the corner from the hotel.

The hotel is quite new and the rooms really look nice and cosy. Very clean but not too sure about room service because i stayed there only a day. There are two tvs in the rooms which i felt was nice but unnecessary. The lifts didn't work as well as they looked and was a long wait even though there were 6? The lobby is huge but not many sofas to sit on. It was a good hotel but lacking on some other basic things.

As I had no prior reservation, I was quoted a room rate of more than RM 300.00 when I enquired at the front desk. Since my institution was in their coporate list, I was given a room for RM 263.00 when I requested for it.
Overall a comfortable hotel with friendly staff and a great central location. Since our car was parked on the 5th floor, it was more convenient for us to walk to the nearby historical sites as it was too much of a hassle to use the car for a short trip.
My only critque was there was no in-room wi-fi!

Location! It is the main point to choose this hotel. No joke, it is so conveniently located that if you are standing at the hotel main entrance, walk to your left and across the road are shopping malls that you can do some shopping; walk to your right and you can find very yummy Melaka Nyonya food restaurant (Named Makko, must try desset: cendol). It is so conveniently located that even my 70 years old nanny can walk to the tourism spot like Red House Melaka and other Baba Nyonya Heritage.

As for the room, we are quite happy because it is very spacious and comfortable. Except the bathroom infrastructure is a bit faulty. However, please take note of the hotel breakfast arrangement.

We stayed a few days with the hotel and the internationals style buffer breakfast were quite ok except one day which we were told the hotel was fully booked. It was such as a long queue to wait for your turn in order to go in the cafe for breakfast. Until we complaint to the hotel staff, they arranged us to have breakfast at another function room which offered Chinese style breakfast. Luckily the Chinese style dim sum breakfast was tasty.

In short, we'll definitely come back again.

Check in was quite long as there is no fix queue for check out. All check in and check out customers are all int he same queue. Check in took around 30mins.

Next issue was the lift. The lift lobby was so packed i could only get to the hotel room after waiting for close to 4 lifts.

The room was however clean and good. I had the sea view room and it was lovely. 2 LCD TVs was something i had never experience before at any other hotels. I can now watch TV at night without disturbing the sleeping kids. The TV reception however was quite bad. The hotel management should improve on it.

The swimming pool is on the 12th floor and overlooking Pahlawan Shopping Centre so view was pretty good. It comes with Steam Room and Sauna Room in respective gender toilets. Both Steam Room and Sauna Room was very clean.

Had a rude shock when went down for breakfast. The queue was so long there was close to 30 people waiting. Ball room was open to lighten the crowd but it was also full. Waited close to 35mins before got a table. The breakfast spread however was superb. The variety offered is one of the best i had for hotel breakfast. The food was pretty tasty too. The staff top up the food constantly so food was constantly filled. However as the place was packed, there is a queue for almost anything you wish to eat there.

As Mahkota and Pahlawan Shopping Centre are both linked to the hotel via bridges, no worries if weather is bad. Can still shop at the 2 shopping malls.

Overall not a bad experience, only thing is the hotel amenities and services does not seem adequate to cater to the crowd, if the hotel can imnprove on this, I will be a returning customer for sure.

Love the room and the location, will definitely go back there again. Wrong information was given by the reservation office which caused inconveniences. A piece of broken glass was found on the room carpeted floor, so I suppose the floor wasn't thoroughly vacuumed. Hope the management will continue to maintain the place well and clean.
