“Nice place to chill but only if you're not in a rush”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

The usual "chill out " food n beverages . Go only if you're not in a hurry .... The service is excruciatingly slow . The food n beverages are nothing to write home about but the ambiance if the place is incredible . It's an old Straits settlement house which has been left pretty much intact with plants growing out of every nook and corner . A great hideaway from Malacca's heat . I met a sweet 14 year old goldern retriever there .... Sleeping the afternoon away under the giant ferns in the air well .

“Great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

My partner and I visited the Baboon house for lunch today.

Fantastic atmosphere and great vibe about the place. Amazing decor in this beautiful old building with two inside courtyards filled with tropical greenery and artwork - which is produced by one of the owners (I presume).

We were lucky enough to meet the artist himself as well as purchased two amazing printed tees. One of a kind and worth the 65rm.

Food: they do burgers - towering and tasty! We had the baboon special and I ordered a lime juice, my favourite Malaysian offering so far, this place does not disappoint!

There are fish, plant life and even a lovely old dog wandering around. Overall just a lovely place out of the heat with the great Malaccan old vibe. Do visit - it's easy to find, just grab out a map or stumble across during your walks around the unesco world heritage town.

“Definitely worth the effort to find this gem of a restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

My husband and I visited The Baboon House earlier this month when visiting Melaka and really enjoyed the experience. The architecture of the building is quite lovely and it's easy to appreciate all the effort that the owner has put into restoring it to it's former glory. On one wall alone you can see several coats of paint colours that he has scraped away to reveal bare wall underneath. The central courtyard is a really restful spot to enjoy your meal if you're able to secure a table there.

We were lucky enough to be served by the owner's sister who took time to chat to us about the restoration of the building and its history, her brother's art works which are on display and the area generally.

The burgers were very tasty - my husband and I shared an Asian chicken burger and the pork burger. We also enjoyed the fresh lime juice and when we commented on a juice that other customers were enjoying we were given one each to try (it was a delicious dragonfruit smoothie - a deep purple colour). I've read a couple of negative reviews on here and quite frankly I don't know what these people are carrying on about. The service was friendly, the surrounding are beautiful and the food was really tasty. I would definitely recommend a trip to The Baboon House if you are visiting Melaka.

“Lived up to advance billing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

If you hanker after some Western style cooking but with a distinctively Asian (in this case, Malaysian) accent, here's the place to go. Fun and funky atmosphere --- and a choice of 6-8 types of huge burgers; I went with a chicken burger that was just delicious; the potato wedges were good but not great; the onion rings that also accompanied the burger were better.

I told the owner that if he opened a branch in NY or LA he'd get rich quick. Here the burger plate and deliciously fresh lime juice ran to a total of US$7.25 (including tax and service!).

“a rhythm on its own”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Love the response to the terrible review. This place runs to its own rhythm. If you can, get a seat in the courtyard between the main area and the kitchen and soak up the atmosphere. Prices are a little steep for Melaka, but on par with this type of gourmet burger style bar in Asia. Only really open for lunch, the burgers are taller than they are wide and as such, you must carefully consider how to attack them. Take you time, consider you options, and enjoy.
