“Classy, well located, and WOW, what a "suite"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

Smooth checkin at sitdown front desk where we were given cold towels and ginger/lemon sorbet on arrival.Meantime our bags were whisked to our room overlooking the lago (lagoon) and river beyond. In the distance we could see the Malacca straits.

As nice as the room was, we moved the next night to a magnificent corner "suite". This was almost as big as our home in Australia. It had a large entrance hall, "guest wc", lounge, dining, study massive bedroom with daybed and huge bathroom with spa, wc and bidet. The shower was a very large "rainshower". The balcony was a wraparound corner that overlooked the best part of the river and the Portuguese galleon on the other side of the river.

The study, lounge and bedroom all had windows overlooking the river.

Breakfast was seved in the River Grill and consisted of 1 item cooked to order and a buffet with many choices.

We had lunch in the River Cafe one day (served by the delightful and tiny) As.The steamboat was really tasy and filling - enough for 2 people at RM28++

The Bar - Bar Rio had live music in the evenings (except Mondays?), and had snbacks and pricey cocktails. Happy hour saw half priced beer.

The pool is exquisite, with its sunlounges, huge blue fluffy towels, friendly attendants, infinity styling that allowed you to wallow in the water whilst taking the amazing view. We also arranged food from the River Cafe as we didnt like the food on the menu (which incidentally was the room service food). We ordered wonderful pizza served on a wooden panel which had a heated clay base to keep the pizza hot and crispy. On Saturday nights they have a "White Party" there, with movies shown in the pool.

The hotel location is right on the river. 50metres away is Herren st and another 50m to Jonker St where the dragon(snake?) spouts water each hour.

Room Tip: Leave the "rievr view" rooms for now as they face construction. Better choice is the "...

This is by no means the cheapest place to stay in Malacca and to be honest there are other alternatives in town which offer a lot of bang for your buck. If however you're of the mind that you get what you pay for then this is the place to part with your money.

Most other reviews have touched on the check-in process (sorbet et al) and the breakfast (combination of ordering 1 items from the ala carte menu and buffet items) so I won't go through those in detail except to say that breakfast was excellent in terms of food quality and preparation.

Being situated just on the edge of the historic city centre means being close enough to not have to worry about driving or being driven there and far enough that you're away from the hustle and bustle of the weekend night market.

Having only 66 rooms in the hotel means life within the premises is feels a lot more stately and peaceful than most other hotels. There is a library on the first floor complete with 2 PCs with internet access, a collection of books and board games and coffee and tea. A modern gymnasium sits next to a spa on the top floor. The infinity pool on the roof offers great views of the surroundings.

As for the room itself, we stayed in a Deluxe room facing the inner courtyard (Deluxe Lago). Like the pictures from other reviewers show, the rooms are big and luxuriously furnished with a generously sized bathroom and wardrobe area. Since the hotel is only a year old, everything works as it should and doesn't show much sign of wear and tear. A note for those with kids, we booked a package called Family Fun which included breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children and an additional bed in the room as part of the deal, very much worth it. It doesn't show on the website anymore so do keep a lookout on the hotel website for their periodic deals.

The attention to detail helps to set this hotel apart from many others, little things like giving the car windows and windscreen a once over and leaving a card behind telling you of the fact, turn-down service, the sorbet at the check-in, ondeh-ondeh in the room, staff taking the trouble to remember our kid's names was of the standard you'd expect from much pricier establishments, the staff were excellent across the board in terms of conduct and discharge of their duties.

The single complaint we have for this hotel is the fact that after having gone through the trouble of making it an oasis of tranquility during the day at night the bar has a live band which goes through it's paces stating from around 10pm. Our room was situated on the wing facing the bar on the 3rd storey and even then the muffled sounds of singing and music playing could be heard through the closed balcony doors. I can only imagine what the noise must be like for rooms directly over the top of the bar. Personally the noise level was acceptable but those with very young children or light sleepers might want to take note of this.

Also, we weren't there on a weekend and can't confirm this but we did see a banner advertising a dance party with DJs at the infinity pool deck which runs from 8pm till 1am every Saturday.

Staying at this hotel as spoiled us rotten, it's got that right mix of modernity, exclusivity and feeling of home away from home and is in a fantastic location to boot. The hotel more than justifies it's premium and will probably be the first and only option for us every time we visit Malacca from now on.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the inner courtyard and fountain are a much better alternative to the river views...

It was my first trip to Melaka and I did not know which hotel to book for the stay. Did some homework and found out that there was this new boutique hotel. I booked Casa del Rio. Check in was smooth. We were given a delightful sorbet while waiting for our room. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. I was led to a beautifully decorated room which was facing the river. At night you can just chill at the balcony and enjoy the cool breeze. Jonker street is a stone's throw away. One of my favourite restaurants in Jonker street is Anak Nonya- great peranakan food! Must try- fried chicken wings. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and kudos to the staff of casa del Rio for making my stay s memorable one! Will return!

The Casa del Rip is perfectly situated on the river close to Jonker St, unlike most of the other major hotels which are in the newer part of town. We stayed in a deluxe room. The room design is heritage style, large, extremely well appointed with amazing bathrooms that include separate rain style shower and large bath. All of the accessories you would expect from a top end hotel are included The rooms have an outside balcony. It was a little noisy at night, partly because the doors to the balcony are not double glazed. There is a very good bar and restaurant but with the many options available in Malaka you may not make use of them. Casa del Rio/Malaka was a great place to end our trip, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Malacca is best explored on foot so in terms of location, the hotel is perfectly placed with underground parking. With only 66 rooms, this is THE place to stay in Malacca. Located besides the river and a stone's throw from Jonker Street, Casa del Rio offers a high standard of service with all the little extras like a cold towel and a refreshing sorbet during check in. The turn down service was impressive too. Slippers, bottle of water by the bedside, weather report, a good selection of hot beverages that can be made before bedtime. Breakfast was hard to fault too. A good buffet spread, freshly squeezed juice and a ala carte selection. The eternity pool on the top floor provides a great place to swim or laze with a good view of the city. The hotel has a cozy library to hide in and read a newspaper or magazine. Just wished we had more time to enjoy the facilities.

Like all the other reviews, Casa del Rio checks all the right boxes for location, setting, ambience, staff, services...etc. Basically stay here in Melaka whether you are traveling single, with a partner or with kids, everyone departs with a smile knowing if they return to Melaka, this is the hotel to stay. So I'll talk about the little things that made the stay ever more pleasant for us.

From the check in where the smiling staff seated us in a nice cabana next to a beautiful water setting leaving us with some interesting ice nutmeg sorbet while they sorted our check-in documents, we knew we would be well taken care of. The room was tastefully done and good sized to fit our family of 2a+2k. Small paper cutouts were provided daily on weather forecasts and interesting news and even pasted on the public men's toilet walls for our reading pleasure while we were... Nice touch

The breakfast at River Grill wasn't the predictable hotel affair and we were provided a combination of ready selections(pastry, cereal, fruits...etc) while the mains were ordered off their menu and freshly made to order. Niceeeeeee and when the food was served in fine-dining presentation, I was truly impressed. And the food was excellent! Probably one the best hotel breakfast I ever had. After sightseeing and returning to our room in the evening, the turn down service left us some nice local desserts for a sweet night ending. Niceeee.

When we checked out and got into our car, I saw a card on my windscreen. The hotel informed that they had cleaned my car windows to ensure clear vision while driving. Thoughtful.

So besides the big things they have done well, Casa del Rio also took the effort to ensure the little things were taken care of. Great hotel, our choice hotel in Melaka.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 107. Nice big balcony facing the river.

I've just returned from a weekend in Melaka with my family (husband, toddler and newborn!!) and the Casa del Rio was wonderful! Malaysian hotels are generally very below par for me - I'm yet to find one I would want to return to - but this is the exception to the rule!

The building is lovely, set by the river around a lovely courtyard with fountains. It is right in the centre of town, just a short walk from Jonker Walk where the action happens. It was very easy to find.

We arrived and were sat by the fountain with a cool towel and the most delicious ginger and lime sorbet to eat while we waited. Check-in was smooth, they were aware of the need for our extra bed and cots (which we had booked through the hotel directly, who were also very helpful on the phone when I made the reservation). We even had the hotel manager come and greet us while we waited, which I thought was nice.

Despite arriving early, we were able to check into our room. We had chosen the River view, which I really liked - I did not notice any construction and I enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the river cruise boats go past. The room was big enough for the extra bed and cot that we had ordered, and was really beautifully done. The bathroom was also fabulous - huge bath and rainshower, great amenities left for us (I particularly liked the hotel special cinnamon soap, which came with a little plastic bag so that you could take it home - what a nice touch!!).

We went straight to the pool as our kids had been cooped up in the car for hours. It was gorgeous - great big sun-loungers with fluffy towels, a good size kids pool and then the infinity pool, which looked over the river. So nice. We ordered food there too which was delicious, the staff were very friendly.

Breakfast was great - I loved the concept. There is a buffet of continental style breakfast - cereals, fruit, Asian selection, toast etc and a little pancake station - and then you are invited to order one selection from the a la carte menu, which was extensive. So much better than a buffet with cold scrambled eggs and sausages! The food was excellent, and I loved being able to order a proper coffee too!! We did have a problem with our order on the second morning, an honest mistake, and the manager was very apologetic - no harm done!

I had a massage at the small spa upstairs - heavenly and highly recommended, and very reasonably priced too. I also used the small gym, which had a nice view.

The best bit of the hotel was the thoughtful touches that go beyond expectations. Not only the little bag to bring home the soap, but others too. For example, the gym has a bowl of apples next to the water so you can have a snack after a workout, and when my husband collected the car from the car park there was a little note to say that they had taken the liberty to wash our windscreen so that we had a safe journey home!!

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. It was well-looked after, the staff were outstanding and it was a great place to return to after a few very hot walks around town. I just hope that it can keep up this high standard! We will definitely be back for another weekend soon!
