“Great budget accommodation & friendly owner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

This place is a great place for backpackers looking for budget accommodation and meeting fellow travellers. The owner (Howard) is very friendly and helps you out right away in case there are any issues (we only had one minor issue with the internet, solved within minutes).

Unfortunately we had a jet-lag after flying back to Malaysia from the Netherlands to continue our travels. Otherwise we would have joined Howard for a dinner tour, chilled out on the very nice rooftop and would have been more chatty to our fellow travellers. :-)

The room was basic (we booked a double room with shared bathroom), but decent enough for us and it matched what we paid for it. Air-conditioning worked fine. The shared showers were fine and more than enough to prevent queues.

The hostel is easy to reach from Melaka Sentral by bus and about ten minutes walking. Of course you can take a taxi as well.

Would stay here again.

The location was pretty good, though not right smack in the middle of Jonker Street, but everything was within walking distance, even to the bus stand with buses to take you to the main bus terminal. There are also plenty of local food options in the vicinity.

The best part was the rooftop, which was a really nice place to chill with cool breeze.

The rooms and shower facilities were basic, and I stayed in an air conditioned private room and had a pretty comfortable stay.

However my friend was in another room with a fan and she had bed bug bites throughout her second night of stay and could not get any sleep as a result. Hopefully this is more a one off incident than the norm in this hostel.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights in Feb 2014. We stayed in a superior room with private ensuite. The room was spacious and even had a lounge area although we were out sightseeing all the time so did not make any use of it. The hostel also has lots of common areas dotted around that anyone. The main one is near reception. This was always busy with people watching films on the TV. The rooftop terrace is an added bonus and we ate our breakfast up there every morning watching the world go by. The hostel is located a few minutes walk to Chinatown and around 5 minutes walk to the river. The best thing about the hostel is the owner, Howard. He really made our stay in Meleka. He took us to lunch one day to a local restaurant. We have no idea what we ate but it tasted amazing!! One night we went on Howard's bike tour. It was the highlight of our stay in Meleka. We went through all the main touristy parts of Meleka and then out through the villages to see how all the locals live. As it was during Chinese New Year there were fireworks going off all over the place. It really was amazing!! 2 nights is enough to see everything in Meleka so unfortunately I don't think we would return to Meleka but if by any chance we found ourselves here again then we would definitely stay at Ringo's Foyer.

Ringo's Foyer is a stone's throw away from all the major attractions of Melaka- close enough to be convenient but far enough away to be peaceful and relaxed. The only sound that may stir you would be the call to prayer from the local mosque or the chatter of voices from the restaurant below. Howard - the owner, manager, maid, cleaner, events organiser, treasurer etc - simply makes this hostel what it is. He welcomed us like we were old friends, showing off all of the attributes of the hostel (communal sitting areas, roof top terrace, huge collection of bikes) and declining our payment for the room for 3 days as he wanted us to be relaxed. What a man! He took us on multiple free bike rides around Melaka, being shown the various sights by the light of the moon and taken to a cheap Chinese eatery in the heat of the day. With excursions to nearby Jonkers Street night market, he solidified our decision that this has been the best hostel we have yet to stay in.
On the practical side, the hostel is located on Jalan Portugis, next to a parking lot and above a restaurant. Walking from the bus drop off point is simple (head over the river into Chinatown and head right down Jalan Portugis) and jumping on the bus back to Melaka Sentral is even closer (take any bus just along from the Shell garage). Ringo's offers dorms, women's dorms, single, double and triple rooms at seriously affordable prices (we are on a very tight budget). Ours was clean and tidy with air-con that worked very well whilst the communal wetrooms were spacious and stocked with toilet-roll and shower gel. With such amenities as the free TV, complimentary breakfast, cheap bike hire, and book exchange, there is very little to dislike about this place.
I urge you to go there. Experience it. Then right a view that may very well sound like this one.

Had a fantastic time staying at ringos foyer, simple rooms but really nice feel to the place as a whole - there's a nice little lounge on the second floor, perfect for relaxing with a book, and downstairs there's a kitchen with a fridge full of soft drinks and beers for a small fee. A simple breakfast is included, and there is a tv with lots of films to choose from. Malacca is a beautiful historic town full of things to see and Howard the owner always takes the time to take visitors around on a number of bikes he owns in the evening for dinner, so not only do you get to see an alternative view of malacca at night but it's also a perfect opportunity to get to know fellow travellers staying at the hostel, over cheap and very yummy local food. Couldn't recommend this hostel enough. Thanks Howard!

The host here is very nice!!:)He took us to a great place for dinner with other
guests on arrival and was full of advice. The hostel is ok with some nice chill out areas. The bathroom is not the best with only a cold shower available and quite a lot of ants. However, the hostel is cheap and sufficient for us being on a budget.

Ringo's foyer guesthouse is one of those guesthouses that has its own personal charm and character to set it aside from the rest. The rooms and the free breakfast are very basic but what you would expect from the price. What sets Ringo's apart is the owner/operator Howard. He takes people on free cycling tours around the city with his little boom box attached to his bike to cheap and good eaterys encouraging you to meet and eat with new people. He will also invite you along to local pubs and drink with local people and he also hosts BBQ's on his cosy little rooftop bar. I have been to this hostel many times and it's no surprise that I see the same people poping back in and passing through. In my last few visits I have seen a fire twirler/snake handler on the rooftop bar, been on a 25km ride around Malaka in Howard's bicycle "foldies" club, sung karaoke with random locals and met a magician who blew my mind. A visit to Ringo's Foyer is always one to remember and to enjoy. Advice - don't be shy and join in with the Randomness that Howard will surely create.
