“Set back from the beaches and wonderful Indian staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2009

Hotel Oceanic is a wonderful hotel to relax. Set back from the beaches along a quiet road, it is away from the Palolem buzz. Palolem beach is a 20min walk away or 50rupees by tuktuk – slightly expensive considering you can get a bus outside the hotel to Margao for 60rupees. Patnem beach is about a 10min walk by taking the shortcut through Goyam Huts. If you miss this shortcut, it is another 12min walk to the main road onto Patnem beach. Colom beach is a 10min walk away and another couple of minutes to Silent Noise (clubbing on the beach with headphones after midnight. They also do screenings of western films there also).

We were welcomed by such friendly and attentive staff. Our double bedroom was very clean equipped with ceiling fan, hanging area for clothes, TV, shower and mango trees at the entrance. There was plenty supplies of toilet roll and the hot running water comes after afew minutes. The hotel itself has a wonderful home from home feel. The swimming pool is well used not just by the hotel guests but also by other tourists and the expat friends of the owners who party into the night. Now and again monkeys would come to visit the pool area and eagles / hawks fly above. There is free wifi and you can also find internet stores closer to Palolem and Patnem beaches.

Walking to Palolem is lovely however we wouldn’t recommend walking after sundown as it is very dark. We were lucky to have a torch on our mobile as it warns the tuktuk and other drivers where you are.

The stars of Hotel Oceanic are Sarvanand (who deals with front of house) and Urmila (behind the scenes). These two are the real hard workers of Hotel Oceanic who sustain the upkeep and running of the hotel. They were so attentive and very much the hub / cogs of the hotel. Their service to the guests are what you would expect from a 5star hotel.

Hotel Oceanic has a wonderful and reasonably price restaurant. It certainly has some of the best food we have had in Palolem and the biryani is a must. The restaurant serves a mixture of Indian and western style food and alcohol is available here.

We loved our stay here and should we come back to Palolem, we would definitely stay here but perhaps in a bigger room with air conditioning.

When my boyfriend and I arrived here, we weren't impressed. Our bedroom door didn't close or lock properly, and the washbasin was leaking. We managed to fix both ourselves. Our room was quite big (it was a deluxe) but the furnishings/bathroom were nothing fancy. The hotel seemed rather tired and past its best.
The pool is quite small, but seemed clean, and there were always sun-loungers available to use.
We did warm to the place after a day or so: breakfast is good and there's a lot of choice (although you do have to pay extra for breakfast; it's not included), and the one dinner we had there was very high quality, and there's a lot of variety on the menu.
We'd been in Delhi prior to Goa, and it seems Delhi Belly set in as soon as we got to the Oceanic. So in that respect, I was pleased we had a large room (so it didn't feel too crampt when I was ill and wanted to stay in the room), and it was also nice to have a pool so we could chill out there.
However, the location was terrible. If you're hiring a moped, then fine. But we didn't. And it's a good 20 minute walk to Patnem or Palolem beach, or to all the restaurants in Palolem. As we were there in low season (March) the walk to Palolem in the evening for dinner was very dark and almost eerie. We'd get a tuktuk back to the hotel afterwards, but it cost 50 rupees and the drivers weren't interested in haggling. 50 rupees is pretty expensive for India for such a short journey. It was also annoying having to walk so far/get a tuktuk to get to the beach. Oh and there's no ATM in Palolem! If you need money, you have to get a bus or a tuktuk to another town further away. Palolem also seems to suffer from a large number of power-cuts (more so than other places in Goa, apparently)
Having said that, in Palolem there's quite a few good restaurants and bars, and market stalls, and there is a decent sandy beach.
The British owners of the Oceanic seemed pleasant to us, although we missed the Indian hospitality that we'd experienced in the other hotels and homestays that we'd stayed in. However, on one evening we decided to have dinner at the hotel, and it was quite annoying that the owners invited a load of their expat neighbours over for drinks. They all just ignored us, and were pretty rowdy, while my boyfriend and I tried to enjoy a quiet dinner.
If you're considering Palolem, and you want a pool then choose Oceanic. If you don't need a pool, there are loads of accommodation options much closer to the beach which are cheaper.
One another annoying thing is that you have to pay to use AC in your bedroom. So when you check out, the total you pay is really quite a lot! (the rate you pay for the room, plus breakfasts (and any lunches/dinners/drinks), plus AC, plus transfers to the airport)

Hour & half drive from the airport or half an hour from Magoan station lies a long white wall with two blue painted dolphins on the gate, behind the wall & up some steps is my idea of heaven. The steps lead to a cool shaded area where you can sit & read, talk to fellow travellers or eat,and eating here can easily turn you into the only person to go to India & put on weight.Breakfast, lunch & dinner are all scrumptious both indian & european choices, freshly prepared & beautifully presented.
There are just six rooms around a balcony all with own bathroom, clean & mosquito free.
The pool area is surrounded by mango & cashew trees, very peaceful.you may spy the odd kingfisher contemplating if there are any fish in the pool to catch,or you may get distracted by a couple of monkeys running across the hotel roof into the grove beyond.
When there's classical music by the pool once a week the area is transformed into a fairy land of candle light. & wonderful sound.
Palolem & Patnum beaches are both ten minites walk ,Patnum being much quieter-both have safe waters, some umbrellas & loungers, places to eat,& you wont get disturbed by hawkers.
There is a small town of one main street ten minutes rickshaw ride away with a market, banks, chemists, post office & off-license.

The Oceanic was the perfect holiday experience - walking distance from two wonderful beaches. The staff were more than helpful and attentive, the pool and restaurant were welcoming and the food was very good.
The room was small, but clean and private with a nicely decorated toilet/shower. A fan rather then AC was in fact adequate though more provision of shelves/hooks would have been appreciated. Never overcrowded with only 6 rooms, probably the best hotel option in the area.

This hotel is over priced and over rated. It is owned by an English couple whose only interest appears to be to make money. They show up at the hotel for about an hour a day and leave the running of the hotel to their local staff. (Who, by the way, are very helpful and the only positive thing about this place).

The rooms are basic and, believe me, there is nothing "Bijou" about this hotel. ("Bijou" is how the owners describe it on their website). The lights in our room didn't work and in spite of reporting this on arrival this wasn't fixed when we left. The rooms are not clean. The towels smell of damp and there was no water in the hotel for 2 days so we were unable to shower (not a good thing after a day on the beach).

I have stayed in many small, basic hotels around the world and have learnt that the difference between a good one and a bad one is the love, care and attention given by its owners. This place has none of this.

Do yourself a favour and stay at one of the rooms/shacks on the beach which are cheaper, change your sheets and towels daily and care about their guests' experience and not just their money.

We stayed at the Oceanic for 5 nights and loved every minute. It doesn't look much from outside, but once up the steps from the road, you find yourself on a small dining terrace / reception area shaded by mango and coconut trees, from where steps lead to the 6 rooms (on different levels) and the lovely pool and deck area. We often had the pool to ourselves, overlooked by the soaring Kites.
The staff were wonderful, Savana, Sapnesh and Chandra looked after us so well it was a wrench to leave and continue our trip up the coast of Goa. The food was never less than utterly delicious, breakfast, lunch and dinner all prepared with care and flair.
We stayed in a standard room which was a bit small and not cheap for Goa and, having seen the superior rooms, would choose one of those and pay the extra in future.
If you want 5 star luxury in a resort hotel with the package tour hoards this isn't the place for you, but if you want an intimate atmosphere and to feel like guests of the owners the Oceanic is a great choice.

I am a seasoned India traveller having been to the subcontinent 8 times. Now middle aged I was looking for somewhere “calm” to use as a base from which to introduce my new partner to India. Oceanic was perfect; The room was spotlessly clean, the food magnificent and not expensive (the best Aloo Ghobi I have ever tasted). We loved the swimming pool surrounded by trees, true its not the biggest pool in the world but just right for cooling off after a day on the beach or a bus ride to Margoa, , We found the staff and management friendly and helpful. Les (the owner) and one of the waiters even ran us to the station at Cancona on their motorbikes, as there was a south Goa transport strike, and we had a train to Bombay booked.

Would I go back? YES as soon as I can.
