“Fantastic and relaxing break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2007

We've just returned from a week long stay at the Taj and have to say that we found the whole experience great...we found that the staff throughout the resort were friendly and efficient, providing a high level of service.

We ate several times in the various restaurants at the hotel, as well as at some of the beach shacks and local restaurants. The food and service throughout at the hotel was excellent - some of the other reviewers mention the prices and yes they are higher than at some of the local places - but hotels always are! If you don't want to pay them there's plenty of choice around to you can opt to eat out instead. Generally, we found that the hotel restaurant prices were comparable with eating out at home in an average restaurant (between £30 - £50 for dinner for two with wine) - our favourites were the Lobster Shack, where the seafood was excellent, as well as the Meditteranean restaurant (try the crab cakes!!) Buffet breakfast - as others have mentioned - has plenty of choice, was always fresh and compared well with other top-end hotels we've stayed in.

The rooms are nice - we never spend much time there and so we didn't bother to upgrade to one of the pool villas - big bathroom, sitting area and a nice large double bed. However, for a nicer location we would probably go for one on a return visit (which we will be making, quite unusual for us).

The activities team are great - plenty of choice and they don't pester you to get involved, but are readily available if you want to take part. Water aerobics and the archery were particularly good - and the bike hire is useful if you want to get around the resort a little quicker.

All in all we'd recommend the hotel without reservation and we rate it much more highly than similar places in the Caribbean that we have stayed in. We met several people who return regularly to the Taj and we don't blame them - we will be too!

What a pleasure to discover this place, a wonderful hotel with all amenities, a wonderful staff and very select patrons.
A must on this coast.
Very recommendable.

Nice hotel with well manicured grounds, nice pool area, lots of activities and very quiet beach with several local shacks for drinks and food. Rooms are spacious with nice balcony/patio and decent bathrooms with separate toilet area. The rooms seem to be deteriorating but comfortable.

Normally most five star hotels have nice rooms, amenities, etc. But what makes a hotel five star is the service. The pool area and activity center had very good service. Service at restaurants are good. The front desk and duty manager not so good. They are uninformed and try to give you a quick answer to things to get rid of you. I was there during high season and they did not offer to check the other TAJ properties when we wanted to extend a stay at $300+ a night. In fact we were making all the suggestions about alternatives and this was my first trip to GOA and India.

I would expect any five star hotel to have impeccable service all around. Five star prices, three star service!

My main criticism of the Taj Exotica is that it felt anything but exotic! If I want to have pictures of Hollywood movie stars in the bar, pool tables in the lobby and a 9 hole golf course I will visit the USA rather than India.

As others have commented, food and drink are overpriced even by 5* standards. The quality of the food was variable - the seafood restaurant was good but outrageously expensive. We ate in all of the restaurants at least once and thought the Indian food served in the coffee shop was the best (better than the Goan restaurant). Imported wine/spirits are also extortionate. The Indian Sula wine was perfectly drinkable - better and less expensive than the cheaper imported wines. Beer is a fifth of the price from the nearby shacks. The hotel do sell bottles of imported spirits at reasonable prices - a litre of Bombay Saphire was about £18.

The room was spacious and generally comfortable although both my wife and I found the mattress too hard. I was also very irritated by the minibar fridge which was not cold enough and not possible to adjust. The only thing worse than expensive Kingfisher is warm expensive Kingfisher! The bathroom was good but I was disconcerted by being able to clearly see people walking around the gounds when sitting on the toilet. If I could see them surely they could see me!

Not a bad hotel overall by any means but rather lacking in character and did not look/sound/smell Indian. This may not matter to some people, but if that is the case then why come to India? Other destinations are closer and do not require a visa.
