“Bad Experience! Hugely Overrated property”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

We visited Goa in First week of August 2013. First two nights , we stayed in south Goa at a plush Club Mahindra property (Emerald Palms) and then for the next two nights, we had booked VIllage Square in North Goa.
We booked this property because a) it got pretty good reviews and b) they were offering some serious discount (2 nights = Rs. 2,500(inclusive of taxes n breakfast for two people)..
Having experienced Club Mahindra, we knew that Orritel would not match up to it - we were mentally prepared for a mediocre experience.
But, little did we know what we were in for!!
Located in the middle of nowhere, this small property does not even have the goan feel to it. To start with - very few staff members were around when we arrived( @ 2 pm)..no one seems to be bothered with guests arriving...all grumpy staff...
however, we checked into our room..and again, sub-consciously we were comparing it with club mahindra..the rooms are true to the resort's name - THE VILLAGE...but the comfort level a resort should have - was missing big time for me and more so for my wife..
fed up of the room, we decided to venture out for sometime..the closest beach is vagator..
thankfully, we had a car to ourselves..otherwise, i dont know what we would do with couple of shady taxi drivers who wait outside the resort...
at vagator, we decided that enough is enough..and decided to quit orritel and head to some other property..Thankfully, we got a wonderful deal in The Park, Calangute..so we checked out from Orritel and ran to the Park! even when we were checking out - there were no staff in front office, some side staff was roaming around in shabby clothes and finally when someone came to attend to us - he looked like he was half drunk & had no clue as to what to do..

The Park was a welcome change, but that I would put that in the reviews for The Park and not here! :P

Having said all of the above, I still think that Orritel Village Square MIGHT suit (a)group of guys traveling together looking for not-so-expensive resort (b)couples on low budget..but that is just about it...

Otherwise, please stay away from this property..

Dear Aashish,

Many thanks for your review on Tripadvisor. Although it was bad for us we look on every review as a chance to assess our performance and rectify any problems our guests have had.

Unfortunately I was on leave when you came to stay but I can assure you that the reviews given on the site to date are from guests who have had a lovely stay and it is not over-rated. Many comments include having been served by friendly & helpful staff, lovely rooms, very comfortable beds and relaxing location. During the season the hotel is 90% occupied and we pride ourselves on a family atmosphere and beautiful environment that ensures people have a nice time.

The resort is in a village/jungle location approximately 2km from Vagator beach and 15 minutes drive from Baga, I often walk in the early morning and it takes 30 minutes to the beach. Our guests have commented previously on having the best of both worlds - the shacks and clubs with parties well into the night at Vagator beach but then the peace and quiet of the resort to come home to.

I'm sorry we didn't come up to your expectations and thank you for not comparing us with Club Mahindra - they are really in a different league to us and we do not market ourselves as being comparable.

Wishing you all the best and happy travels in future,

Kind regards

I feel this hotel is over-hyped on tripadvisor. Most of the reviews seem fake. Most of the reviewers have just reviewed once, and pls dont tell me that village square is so big and lavish that they made their accounts just to rate it and then they did not find anything in the world to review.

Tripadvisor is loosing its credibility. I visited 5 hotels in Goa, all of them having certificate of excellence from TA !!

About the hotel :

1. It is located far from the beach. No groceries, restaurants, any other facilities nearby.
2. The rooms are spacious but the bathroom in standard room was way too small. They have given a big size for changing room. and the bathroom is too small. Bathroom and toilet are separate for just about 3x3 feet each. I dont understand why on earth they wasted space in changing room rather than utilizing in bathrooms. The rooms have glass in front, so we can get pool view from room. But curtain in my room was just a cloth and not the curtain material unlike my fellow traveller in other room.
3. Hot water was unavailable as their solar was not working. They provided in buckets if we requested, so had to bother that every morning.
4. Breakfast is not upto the mark. Bread toaster is very slow. No juice.
5. They say free wifi when booked through agoda. But that is available only in reception and restaurant. Not in rooms !!
6. Rooms are modern and pools were well maintained. Staff was good.
7. A good option with the price they charge. But need to do some adjustments.

We went for Sonesta inns hotel later on and it was superb. Well located, nice rooms and service but high rates as compared to this. Do check my review on that.

Management needs to work specially on their bathrooms, breakfast quality..

Dear Sir,

I'm so sorry you feel that Tripadvisor reviews are not credible and that our reviewers appear not genuine, I can assure you that our resort has received wonderful feedback from a variety of different guests, both Indian and foreign. You should appreciate that here in India there are many people who do not travel extensively and are only just being acquainted with Tripadvisor.

During the season there are numerous restaurants, bars and clubs within a 2km radius of our resort. Additionally there is a supermarket selling all essentials within 2 minutes drive or 15 minutes walk from us.

The resort is an award winning design by Goan architect Dean D'Cruz and we appreciate that it may not be to everyone's taste but we do get mostly good reaction to the room's size and design.

We appreciate every review we get and will endeavour to address those issues raised by yourself. The solar system has now been serviced and is fully functioning, clean curtains replaced in the room and we will look to buy a new toaster,

Many thanks once again for your stay with us and sorry it was not to your liking.

Kind regards

This was our first trip together to Goa and Orritel made it special. Public pool seemed like private as no one really bothered us and we were also able to order drinks poolside. The restaurant serves nice food. We stayed in a premium room which was very spacious, the standard rooms are also equally wee furnished. We loved our private little garden at the back of the room coz towards the evening the jasmine plants filled the room with their smell. We had driven from bangalore in our own car and it was a great peace of mind to find indoor parking at the orritel. Me and my wife will definitely return to goa and orritel very soon.

It was a good small boutique hotel far away from the market place and the beaches.
The staff was courteous but the food was not so good as there were not so many tourists staying at that time, but would say OK.
The suite we stayed at was good right in front of the pool.
We have been asked to check out at 11.00 even though they have promised us that we can stay until 4.00 PM, but later on we had to check out at 11.00 and even though they have provided us a small room to stay until 4.00, it was not a very good experience though.

I have visited in this Resort with all my office colleagues in the month of July and had booked this place with a few appreciations heard before. We did book 1 premium rooms, 3 standard rooms and 1 suite. Once we landed this Resort the stuff treated us well and hence its friendly service makes it worthwhile staying in this small resort. The garden and pool area was small, but it’s a relaxing and quiet place we enjoyed spending good time over there. But the only issues we faced is the food. The quality of food doesn't seem as to be rated as the star resort. The Breakfast was too pathetic. I would suggest to get a certified chef. Also later we found the actual hospitality services was missing, we couldn't find any staff after 12:00am for serving. The rooms were Big spacious, well designed but we were not able to change the AC temperature as set to 25'degree which we came to know that it was set for all the rooms. The other locations were too far from the resorts as it was deep inside the actual market area. We found Calaguate market the place for shopping and Baga the most lively beach which was approx. 25kms from our stay The Village Square Resort. Looking at this I would definitely not place a thumbs-up and would not recommend it to anyone. Lastly we were been told to check out before i.e. 11:00 am the actual checkout time was12:00 pm.

Room Tip: Standard corner

Thank you so much for reviewing us on Tripadvisor and for all your comments - good and bad! It is only from getting these reviews that we can improve our service for you. We strive to make our guests happy and it's great that you had a good time but so sorry that you didn't enjoy the food and the breakfast. We are currently reviewing all our food provision and promise to take your comments into account.

As a village based resort we think of ourselves as having the best of both worlds - only 2kms from the beach and the attractions but guests are able to return to the peace and beauty of our garden and jungle setting.

Kind regards

I visited in March with my wife and had booked this place with a few apprehensions.. But once I landed there, they were all gone. Debbie, the manager surprised us by upgrading us to a suite. The location although about 10mins drive from the beach is absolutely peaceful and the roads are good and safe. Rent a scooter from the hotel itself and you are ready to go! The suite was amazing. Very different from a typical 'hotel' and still had everything we'd need. The best part of the hotel was the pool area which was beautifully landscaped and without doubt one of the cleanest pools I've seen. The service although not impeccable; the staff always extremely helpful and warm. Food menu was limited, but they could prepare anything if informed in advance. I recommend 'Masala Khichdi' by the chef there. Absolutely brilliant. I suggest a stay of atlest 5-6 days - 4 days for Goa and 2 days just for The village square. I'm definitely planning a next visit with a bunch of friends very soon!

I visited this place in June with my parents and brother and left with a great experience. The resort is nestled in a beautiful green belt and is beautifully landscaped with cherry blossoms and mango trees around one of the prettiest and by far the cleanest resort pool yet. The Staff is warm, friendly and courteous. About 7 minutes from the beach and not far from some of the best eateries, Village Square is cut off from the touristy hustle buste but takes only a short ride to get to the popular places if that's what interests you. The rooms were big, spacious, neat and well designed. For all that I left with, I thought it was really well priced too.
Food was homely but did not have an expansive menu.

It was a great 5 days stay and I'd definitely give this place a thumbsup and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed and fun stay.

Room Tip: I spent a few days in the suite which was incredibly large and then moved to the lower priced Delux...
