My sweetheart and I just dined at Firebirds for the first time. We ordered the Crab Cakes Appetizer ($14.25), which is served with slaw and a mango chutney. Having recently visited Maine, I thought Firebirds' crab cakes were not in the same league. Not only were they small, but they had a strong lemon/lime taste, which overpowered the crab. The mango chutney was good, but served cold. I would have preferred to have the chutney warm or at least room temperature.
We both ordered the Colorado Chicken Salad ($13.00), and both thought is was very good. It is typically served with chilled grilled chicken, but we ordered ours with warm chicken, and our server was more than willing to accommodate us.
For dessert, we shared a piece of the Big Daddy Chocolate Cake ($7.25). It is a large serving of warm chocolate cake with chocolate icing, and served with one scoop of vanilla ice cream, and raspberry coulis. If you are a chocolate lover, you can't go wrong with the Big Daddy!
Ariana was our server and she did a great job! She was very professional and personable, and attentive without being intrusive. We asked her several questions about the menu, and she was very knowledgeable. Everything was just as she described it, and more importantly, just as we had ordered it. This is a little thing, but when she brought us a dessert fork, she laid it on my beverage napkin, which I really appreciated. The attention to detail is what sets you apart.
Pros: The food was good, and the menu has a nice variety, which includes burgers, sandwiches, salads, steaks, and seafood. They also have several vegetarian and gluten free options. Although, I did not try them during this visit, Firebirds serves tater tots. You just have to like a restaurant that has tater tots on the menu. Also, the service was well above average. Kudos to Ariana for making our experience so enjoyable!
Cons: First the music is incredibly loud, forcing you to talk above your normal volume. As the restaurant filled up with patrons, the louder everyone had to talk. Not only were we having trouble hearing each other, but our server was having trouble hearing us as well. Second, the women's restroom was in desperate need of servicing. The trash bin was overflowing, and only one stall was well stocked with toilet paper. This definitely should have been checked prior to the dinner crowd arriving. Third, we ordered Figi Bottled Water ($3.50/bottle), which is a markup of almost 200%.
Summary: Overall, my sweetheart and I were very pleased with our visit, and look forward to dining at Firebirds again.
