I was stuck in Fayette over the lunch hour and two people at the courthouse said try Sam's. What a treat! First, it is a dive with a former porch enclosed for dining, so it is rural casual. Second, Sam actually works here cooking and serving at the counter, so you know he cares. His unique feature is smoked BBQ wings and smoked Chicken Tenders seved with a Yellow BBQ sauce that tastes great. He also serves pulled pork. Sides include a sweet cole slaw, beans in his yellow sauce with real pork bits in them, giant onion rings and french fries. I had the Chicken Tender BBQ Sandwich, slaw, beans, onion rings, sweet tea and one of Sam's BBQ wings for less than $10! It took two plates to hold it all. The food was excellent. I have never seen smoked BBQ wings, but they were outstanding. Slaw was sweet but not overly, beans were surprisingly good, and the onion rings appeared to be freshly made on-site. It would be worth a drive from Tuscaloosa just to eat Sam's food. He smokes the food on the premise. The setting and building may disappoint you, but the food won't. I say it ranks in the top 10 BBQ joints I have tried across the nation (and I've tried them from NY to CA and points between). Sam serves hearty, tasty food.
