“Peaceful, Relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2008

This was a clean, quiet campground with private campers'-only beach access. Everyone was friendly. The shower house left much to be desired. There was no hand soap and there was a clump of hair on the tiles in the shower that was never cleaned off. For a tent camper, the shower house means a lot!

We visited Fort Gaines and had a wonderful time.

The 750 foot fishing pier is out of commission. There is no water under it, only sand because of Hurricane Katrina.

We ate at the Crusty Crab. It was over priced and the food was too salty and greasy.

  • Liked — Access to beach and peaceful environment. No franchises.
  • Disliked — The shower house at the campground.

Rates are very reasonable. The private "campers only beach" was very nice. In fact, it is the first beach I have ever been to that you could lay on an inflatable raft and not be washed back to shore on waves! You colud actually enjoy the water and the beach. We spent 3 nights there and love the campground. Nice clean bath house, large camp sites with shade and easy access to the beach via trail and wooden walkway. Would love to see more concrete pads and perhaps more "full hook-up" sites. We were there during the Labor Day holiday with 3 other families and were able reserve camp sites back- to-back. We also liked that the Island was not very commercialized. Mostly just a "Mom and Pop" kind of busineses. The water was beautiful, with thousands of sand dollars off shore and if you must take in some shopping, it is only a ferry ride away in Foley, AL. We have booked a whole week there for Thanksgiving and look forward to the evening on the beach under the stars. The best kept secret on the gulf!!!!

We researched numerous campgrouds in Gulf Shores area - this is the only one that appeared to be what we were looking for - quiet, trees, space and beach. This was camping. The sites all had plenty of room (we had a pop-up, but there were plenty of large campers and even an area for tents) and shade. $27 a night - water and electric. The bath-house was large and always clean. Employees always friendly. The campground backs up against a bird santuary, with numerous trails to check out. Also has a path directly to the beach on the Gulf side. Across the street from the campground is the dock for the Gulf Shores ferry (I believe something like $19 dollars Round Trip) and the Sea Lab Estuary. Fort Gaines is about 300 yards away. Barnacle Bill's - very nice place to eat - best Grouper I ever had. The best dock fishing I found was on the other side of the big bridge connecting to the mainland - can't remember the name. They charge a little per hour and do rent poles, but I would advise bringing your own poles - nothing fancy is needed. All in all, very nice week on Duaphin Island.
P.S. Gulf Shores State Park campground is still pretty devastated from Katrina - dock gone, trees gone.

Just returned from DI after a very short three day trip. First I'll tell you what we missed; a cruise around the island, fishing off the pier and deep sea, also a sun burn. We did see sea lab and the fish . also hicked the bird trails and wound up on a secluded beach at the Gulf of Mexico. We ate seafood almost every meal. Oh I almost forgot , we camped next door to Ft Gaines and never made the tour but like I said we only had three days and the RV camping facilities were excellent. We had a shaded spot as most are with full hook ups. We have to come back to see it all. Don and Cathy with Christmas the dog and Tootsie and Whiskers the cats.
