“Mangrove city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Recife Antigo is a place to discover. The heart of the old city has numerous bridges, narrow streets with old and somehow mysterious buildings waiting for you to find them. There are a lot of churches and cultural centers, but the local touristic information is very poor, so my advise is to make a good research before getting there (better if listening to Nação Zumbi), so you can know where's the best city street market, where to listen and watch to an amazing maracatu presentation and other cultural happenings. The people are so lovable and helpful, but always be careful of the ones with bad intentions, specially when it's deserted. Enjoy Recife, the mangrove city :)

“Some very nice historic buildings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

There's a lot of history and culture in this town. There are some very interesting buildings, however you have to look for them. There are a lot of just old buildings, some looking in disrepair. But if you're given some tips on the right places to go then it's very interesting. It's a nice area to take a slow walk around and enjoy. Although near the metro it can be very crowded.

“The historic heart of Recife”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Cobbled streets and stunning colonial architecture make this recently-restored area special. Although bustling with life at weekends, particularly late evening, take care because during the week it can be deserted and unsafe. Head here late Sunday afternoons for the huge, busting street market, with crafts, food, music..... and caipirinhas!

“Not so well preserved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

Most of the buildings need repair. It seems that the place was abbandoned for a long time and just now some places are being repainted. It's nice for the history, but nothing special.
