“Excellent food.....steep price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Sonargaon is a signature restaurant in Taj Bengal, the famous 5-star hotel in Kolkata which still boasts of old-day charm. Sonargaon serves Indian & North western cuisine. During our last visit, we had Gondhoraj Bhetki and Kakori kebab for starters. I would recommend both of these very strongly: Gondhoraj Bhetki involves interesting use of Gondho lebu (one type of Bengali lemon) generously applied on succulent Bhetki pieces. Kakori kebab was perhaps the softest lamb kebab I ever had in my life....oh so soft and delicious. For main course, we had mix of rotis with Palak Paneer and Pabna Chicken. Palak paneer was fantastic; though Pabna Chicken is a little bit pedestrian and not too great. So I would recommend you may stick to Butter masala if you want to try out chicken. For dessert, I would strongly recommend Gur ice-cream which is an interesting mix of "Gur" and ice cream and quite a fitting finish.
The spread is quite good and you can try out the Non-veg Kebab platter also to try out different tastes. Also there is a separate menu card with full three-course meals with wide array of choices coupled with different wine to go with different options. This is a great option for single diners at 2000 INR.
The costs are way steep. Consider this: one Roomali Roti cost us INR100. Or one dish of cauliflower (Gobi) would put you back by INR 750! The best Gobi in market would not cost you more than INR 25 a price. :-)
But then again, you know this when you go to Sonargaon. The ambience is obviously great with dim light all over. Try to avoid the room in between; gets quite noisy post 8.30pm. The service is terrific, and you will get all due attention.
Highly recommended if you are prepared to shell out 2k per person.
