Tucked away in one of the crowded by lanes of College Square is Paramount, a little gem of Kolkata. It has been around for close to a century now and is almost a part of the city's history. Very basic in terms of facilities, good old wooden benches with marble topped tables, simple white washed walls with old paintings....the place really looks like it's come alive from one of the black and white bengali movies of the 1950s....this is a place which makes you feel time really has stood still. Yes it can be crowded, uncomfortable and totally 'uncool' but once you start to sip on one of its fresh cold drinks such as the Rose Sarbat, Lassi, Grapes Crush (with reals grapes floating inside) etc. you would feel it's worth all the pain to be there. None of the coolers and smoothies of the big names such as the CCD, Barista etc. even come close. Although the prices have gone up they are still less than half of what they would normally cost at any of the fancy modern cafes. I you are here be sure to try the Daab Sarbat .... a recepie handed down by the great Prafulla Chandra Roy and their signature drink Cocoa Malai. This is a must visit for all you people out there. If you are visiting the college street 'boi para' the book market, nothing can be more refreshing than spending some time here.
