“The most unique hotel experience in Kolkata!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2011

My family and I recently stayed at the Fairlawn for 3 nights and loved our stay! It is a very unique hotel as it is actually a Raj-era home which was built over 225 years ago. It is quite a bit different than a traditional hotel, but don't let this deter you from staying there.

The downstairs is where the restaurant and bar are located. Breakfast is not the best I have had in Asia, but is okay. They serve lunch and dinner from around 10am until around 9pm. Complimentary tea is served each afternoon from 4pm to 6pm. The staff are all helpful and friendly and are quick to help any questions you may have.

About half of the rooms are located downstairs while the rest are upstairs. Up the stairs and throughout the second floor, there are lots of pictures, newspaper articles and other interesting things to look at. Our room was #2 located on the second floor. We had a double bed and another single bed for our children. The room was very spacious and clean. The cable TV had a wide assortment of channels including many English language channels. The bathroom was also spacious. The entire hotel is guarded and very safe.

The Fairlawn Hotel is located on Sutter Street and is very near the popular streets of Park Street and Chowringhee Street. There are many great restaurants and shops within easy walking distance.

If you see Ms Violet, the owner, sitting downstairs, do take time to introduce yourself to her. She is 90 years old and has spent much of her life living in India. She is a walking history book on Kolkata!

I will absolutely stay here again in the future!

We stayed here for just one night, but would like to have stayed more. We had a very large and comfortable room on the first floor that was also very clean. The hotel is in a handy location, near the Indian Museum and the Maidan. The breakfast was good. There weren't too many options on their dinner menu, but there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. There was a security guard for extra safety and he was very welcoming and helpful. I will stay here again next time I'm in Kolkata.

Felt compelled to reply to the "complete nightmare comment" below. The Fairlawn is not a complete nightmare! We stayed there for 7 nights earlier this year and loved it.

There might not have been food available after 9 (which is quite late) but the staff are so attentive throughout the day with breakfast and afternoon tea included in the room rate. We found the whole place very clean, spotless in fact. As for the noise, considering it is on Sudder Street, a busy street in the centre of a very busy city, it was so quiet! It's set back from the road in a peaceful garden, you couldn't get more relaxed in such a hectic city. As for the decor, that's what makes it so cool! There's fascinating photos, documents and artefacts all over the walls.

Great place to stay.

I travelled to Kolkata earlier this month (October 2011) with my mother and over-nighted at the Fairlawn prior to taking a trip to the Sunderbans region of West Bengal. My mother describes her stay at the Fairlawn as "a complete nightmare" and she does not usually exaggerate. I agree with her. We arrived mid evening after a flight from Jodhpur via Delhi. Dinner or a light snack were not available after 9pm as we were told that the kitchen was closed. Staff were not helpful. The central staircase and the public rooms were filthy. The decor is stuck in a time warp c. 1935. The beer garden featured several large rats for company, and most of the greenery in and around the hotel is plastic. Sudder Street is noisy, day and night. The upside was that our somewhat spartan room was clean, the sheets were clean and there was hot water. But I will not stay at the Fairlawn again and will not recommend it to others. For a much more pleasant stay in Kolkata, try the Bodhi Tree which is charming and overall better value.

You could've missed the place-a quiet little compound right next to the ICWAI office on Sudder Street. The hotel is quite low key and competes with a couple of fancy hotels close by. But Fairlawn is for the romantics as opposed to the 'star crossed'!!!! None of the star facilties except for great service and high level of cleanliness. The interiors remind one of the old time architecture styles- high roofs, wooden beams, old but solid furniture. The rooms were not great to look at but had everything else you could ask for-Tea maker, TV, fridge. The passageways were filled with photos-quite nostalgic, some of them.
Breakfast was an English affair, though an 'eggetarian' could easily manage with the egg varieties (made to order), fresh fruits, cereals, toast, tea/coffee.
What struck me about the difference in this place is that they did not bother about asking for 'advance payment' as most other hotels do. The place is very close to Park Street and there are also quite a few eating joints on Sudder Street. Fairlawn needs to build up a decent Indian lunch/dinner menu. However, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
Overall, a dreamy experience and would love to visit the place again.

A hotel tucked away from the madness of Kolkatta and only a stones throw from the New Market. Palms; green leafy beer garden; spacious, clean rooms; hot water on tap; good toilets; fantastic breakfasts; wonderful staff, and a hostess of 90+ years whose life is recorded in pictures and artificats spread all around the hotel including the grand drawing room. She is very well loved, highly respectedy lady. Very good tarriff. Cannot give it a star rating as it's like coming home. Warm, comfortable, a place to kick of your shoes and relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We stayed their on our arrival and returned there on our way back from India. RECOMMENDED WITHOUT HESITATION.

This hotel really has it all: the interior is a delight with so much history to explore, but this hotel is so much more than that: spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, great bathrooms and above all: genuinely friendly and helpfull staff. It was a delight to stay here.
Other places in Calcutta will offer more 'stars', but this hotel has warmth and goes out of its way to make you feel at home.
