“Service with a smile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the hotel in November 2012. We were there on business and what a pleasure it was to know that after the hustle, bustle and chaos that is Kolkata, the santuary of the Oberoi awaited us each evening.

The food was fantastic, we eat at both restaurants, and the chef personally asked if we were satisfied on both occassions.
The rooms are a little dated but the beds luxurious with a choice of pillow filling! Chose the duck down pillows and enjoyed the best sleep for ages.
The pool is beautiful if a little cold early in the morning.
The hotel is showing some signs of distress in terms of painting upkeep, and yes it is a little dated in style. But it has character in buckets.

Now the best part - the staff are simply the best and most motivated I have ever experienced, and I travel alot. They always ask after you, want to know if there is anything more than can do, and always smile! They do it earnestly, always with eye contact and always with a genuine enthusiasm . I don't know who does the training at the Oberoi hotel chain but they should be recognised and rewarded.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Kolkata - nor should you!

Room Tip: We stayed on the third floor overlooking the pool.

I am traveling solo in Asia to experience and photograph the culture. I choose Kolkata at the suggestion of a friend who also suggested the Oberoi Grand as it is in a great central location for seeing the city and walking around. My stay at the hotel was memorable for the warm friendly service and wonderful food. The head chef suggested meals and cooked according to my dietary restrictions, as I am allergic to dairy. The restaurant manager made certain I was served coffee, fruit and some sweets at 4:30 or 5 AM in my room before my morning photographic outings. The entire staff truly made me feel special making my work for the eight days I was there so much easier. When I return to Kolkata, I will look forward to seeing the city and staying at the Grand.

Room Tip: I asked for a city view and liked it.

Recently,I stayed in this historic luxurious Hotel for a week and enjoyed my stay to the hilt.It is historic since it is 125 years old and luxurious since its ambience and guest facilities are nothing less than superb.Although located in the busy Chowringhee Road, the stay is very soothing for the guests. The lobby, swimming pool, corriders and business centres are excellent and fascinates the guests. The hotel has a fusion Victorian and Indian architecture.Rooms are really nice with very high quality upholstory, fantastic washrooms, quality toileteries, towels, soft blankets etc.Staff are very very courteous and ensure Guests' comfort and delight all the time.Be it the Buffet dinners or breakfasts, food is really delicious. To top it all, the Chefs also take care in helping the Guests to order for good quality ethenic and exotic dishes.

I recommend this Hotel to all those who descend on Kolkata for tours.

Room Tip: Better occupy rooms at higher floors.

If you are truly looking to experience Kolkata at its finest, this is the property to be in. With a 130 year old heritage, the Oberoi pedigree, and service which goes beyond the warmth you can imagine. We have had many wonderful experiences here - from the fine Thai cuisine at Baan Thai to the succulent Indian treats at La Terasse, each one has been an evening to remember. The spa rooms are huge - some of the old British heritage styled architecture speaks through the chandeliers. The masseurs are well trained, extremely talented and very polite.

The property could possibly do with a little addition in terms of a new restaurant and maybe some additions to the beautiful Chowringhee Bar - but overall, I'd rate it as the finest experience in Kolkata by miles. The GM is very involved himself, going out of the way to make the guests feel welcome and comfortable -and my experiences with the F&B Head has been fantastic so far.

Situated in the heart of the business district, the hotel still maintains its old world charm and Oberoi hospitality.

Overall, I recommend this highly and dont forget to experience the Spa.

The "Old Lady of Chowringhee" is a wonderfully historic hotel in the centre of Calcutta and probably THE place to stay if you are visiting the city. It is great value for money with well furnished rooms, friendly and hard-working staff and a tranquil pool and lobby area - perfect after a hard day touring the city.

We stayed with our two young children for three nights and the staff could not have been more helpful. All needs were catered for - my only gripe being the staff occassionaly said "10 minutes" when actually it took closer to 30.

The hotel is securely and well located and within walking distance of some good restaurants and local markets. As we were visiting to explore some of the colonial era sites nearby, it was particulalry nice to stay in hotel with over 100 years of it's own history.

Room Tip: Majority of rooms over look the peaceful courtyard. Also worth asking for a complimentary upgrade to...
