“one of the better hotels in kolkata...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Firsly, one expects nothing short of excellent service in every Taj property and this one doesn't disappoint either. Absolutely clean and deco-laden interiors, some of them even precious pieces of art, I hear. Next, the room I got was a medium sized one, but had pleasing views of the city and a stadium in the far background. We didn't try the buffet, but the coffee we had was amazing, they also served complementary white, milk and dark chocolates each evening.
Just one disappointment for me though, the bath tub was a tad less wide, so its not suited to those with a lottle extra pounds on them..!
The staff were polite and readily granted us a late check out by 1500 hrs.

Room Tip: A higher room to the right of the lift might be a good one!

Taj Bengal still retains an iconic status in Kolkata … thought it’s been overtaken sometime back in terms of ambience, opulence and ‘newness’ of the other popular hotels there like ITC Sonar, Hyatts (with JW Marriott and other lined up). The location simply rocks – being walking distance from Victoria Memorial and Race Course – perfect for a late evening walk.

What hits you immediately is the blend of British era & contemporary designs – with a few fake palm trees thrown in for good measure. The reception here is personal and traditional, with garland and tika on the forehead. Check-in in quick and absolutely professional – matching Vivanta. The center of the hotel has huge open areas with rooms on the side – typical of the design of the old era (seen in most Ashoka & Centaur Hotels). The hotel has 229 refurbished rooms and suites. With excellent wooden flooring in most places (believe it’s teakwood) – walls are adorned with paintings reminiscent of the city’s colonial heritage. Old colonial furniture are everywhere with comfortable lounges in every floor near the lifts. The ground floor has about 5-6 specialty restaurants + the Coffee Shop & a Deli. Breakfast was average and a little disappointing – was expecting a range like Vivanta’s. Food at the conferences also disappointed a little and something they should seriously look at.

What sets the hotel apart is the staff & service – it’s absolutely fantastic and one the best I have some across ! You are attended to immediately wherever you are … and in a thorough professional manner. What was surprising was the service they offered us during the 2 days official program at the Banquet area with 3-4 members available at all time ensuring your glasses don’t remain empty even for a minute … or getting you a Cappuccino from the coffee shop and more. Haven’t seen such quality in any hotel across India.

There is a Spa and a Gym in the basement (-2 floor) and the latter is better than what most hotels offer. The service and maintenance is just amazing – with the staff cleaning all used machines within minute, getting a bottle of water and towels to all guests and helping them when called for. Would highly recommend this hotel for business and leisure trips … you may get fancier hotels, but probably not one offering similar quality of service.

Taj is one of te best hotel chains of India. And this hotel lived up to the company name. Fine hotel. Chinese food in the restaurant was very good. On our trip to India this was the most expensive hotel but guess we decided to indulge in one city.Kolkatta is really a charming city and was a pleasure to return to the hotel after a tiring day. Visit the Victoria memorial, definetely worth a visit. The rooms in the hotel was good, the breakfast was great. Fully recommended hotel.

Typical close to perfect TAJ service, Club floor staff outstanding and extremely helpful, however the heat and humidity in the atrium needs major attention, especially in the top floors.

Very efficient check-in, had a snack at the pool, which was very good, breakfast on the club floor offering stunning views and a smaller selection than the main restaurant, however very friendly and personalized service.

It was a short two day business visit. Taj Bengal suited the best, right in the heart of the city, still away from the crowd. Overlooking greenery of the Alipore Zoo was an adders attraction. Staff were very courteous, food sumptuous. The only problem was parkingnspace for the car. I had to wait for nearly 15 minutes to get my car, which wass parked far away from the hotel and there was no U turn near the hotel.

I have been here several time and keep being amazed by the service. This times booked a cheap room and it looked...cheap. The room was very damp. It was small and the bathroom very spartian. But again the staff was adorable and all the rest does not count. Theindian restaurant is great
